1. The history of black hole research is almost as
fascinating as the black holes themselves. From the
first proposal of their existence in 1783 to the growing
body of research today, black holes represent an
enigma of nature both fascinating and beautiful.
SAAO will be holding a public lecture, presented
by world famous astrophysicist, Professor Bengt
Gustafsson who will sketch the history, present
knowledge, problems and solutions around one of the
Universe’s most awe-inspiring phenomena.

Prof Bengt Gustafsson is the
Academy of Science of South
Africa (ASSAf) Distinguished
Visiting Scholar for 2014/
2015. He has spent many
years popularising science
and astronomy in the
media both in Sweden
and internationally. He is
a professor at Stockholm
and Uppsala universities;
has served on the Nobel
Committee for Physics; and
is a member of the Swedish
Royal Academy of Science.
