IMPACT OF FOOD INSECURITY
¡ When children struggle with food insecurity:
§ they are more susceptible to iron deficiency,
§ asthma,
§ ear infections and
§ cardiovascular disease.
¡ Children in food insecure households are:
§ tardy and absent from school more often and
§ have more behavior problems.
¡ Food insecure children and elders have a greater chance of being
hospitalized and have longer hospital stays.
¡ Patients from food insecure households often have to choose
between buying food or medicine.
¡ Food insecurity is associated to childhood obesity and
overweight.

§ Available to SNAP clients statewide – automatically enrolled
(once HIP, always HIP)
§ Incentive instantly applied to SNAP EBT card

§ Clients will need to spend SNAP to earn HIP
§ HIP benefit available for a 3-year period, starting April 1st
