ASTD2014 Presentation ---
Online colleges need online training. This has pluses and minuses. Higher education was built on Sage-on-the-Stage, but learning theory shows that this isn't the best method for effective learning. For faculty training, the e-learning team at NECB chose to capitalize on Canvas, the new learning management system, to build out a platform to connect faculty and to share best practices.
As a college espousing interactive learning, it was important to create synchronous and asynchronous faculty training programs that allowed faculty to interact in ways similar to what is expected of the students.
In this session, the speakers will share how the e-learning team took faculty training from monthly teleconferences to quarterly interactive, synchronous workshops and built out a portal to allow for asynchronous interaction for just-in-time assistance. Faculty members rave about the ability to stay connected, and find the information they need, as well as up-to-the-minute resources to hone their skills and deliver the best education possible to our students.Higher Ed ID staff will be able to apply similar models for training their faculty.
4. Preparation
Synchronous Sound Salutations
• Take out any device that has an internet connection and a speaker.
• Turn your speaker up. If it is a cellphone, turn speaker on and turn up.
Activity
When I say “GO!” the timer will start and you should perform the
following:
• Search on YouTube for the song I will provide. DO NOT play the song
until timer reaches 0:00
• Play song when timer reaches 0:00
5. Takeaways
Synchronous Sound Salutations
• 1 – Directions may need to be repeated
• 2 – Multitasking
• 3 – Some didn’t know how to make it stop
• 4 – Using the technology??
• 5 – No synchronicity – not synced
• 6 – Technology/User/Trainer issues
• 7 – Many options – Which to use?
7. To create courses so good that students
talk about them outside of class:
– bringing new ideas to the workplace
– excited about what they are learning
– eager to discover more
8. Monthly faculty meetings were conference
calls sharing statistics and announcements
very
boring
Blah blah
blah,
blah, blah
blah
9. • 100% remote
• Contractors
• Varying skill
level
• No formal
training
10. • New LMS rolling out
• Off-site &
decentralized faculty
• No space for ongoing
discussion
• Disorganization of
relevant training
material
11. As we all know
Blah blah blah,
blah, blah blah
So how do we go
from this
to this?
12. Start with the Basics of ID
Define your problem
• Examine “what is”
• Define what you want
• Identify the gap
Know your people
GAP
What is Goal
13. To engage faculty with things that matter:
– bringing new ideas to the workplace
– excited about what they are learning
– eager to discover more
– make the student experience valuable
– provide just in time solutions
15. • Apply multiple methods of instruction to connect
curricular concepts to useful knowledge and skills
• Collaboration Tools to encourage faculty interaction
• Utilize technology to provide relevant and timely
information and to enhance the learning experience
Apply methods that work!

– eager to discover more
– bringing new ideas to the workplace
– provide “just in time” solutions
25. Lessons Learned
• Don’t assume online
faculty are technically
astute
• People resist change
• Ownership is fuzzy
• Provide things to drive
them to the CoP
• Never, never, never
give up
