Samuel Johnson published his Preface to Shakespeare in 1765, in which he both praised Shakespeare's works while also identifying some faults. Johnson rejected previous views that dramas must follow the classical unity of time and place. While praising Shakespeare's use of language and ability to portray universal human passions through distinctive characters, Johnson also noted Shakespeare's occasional lack of morality, carelessness with plots, and improper word choices or order at times. Overall, Johnson's Preface to Shakespeare provided both appreciation of Shakespeare's talents as well as constructive criticism to better understand literature as a whole.

He was the pioneer of Practical criticism.
Practical Criticism means talking about the merits & de-merits of a
individuals work.
As a neo-classicist Samuel Johnson tries to create balances between the
Excellencies & defaults of Shakespeare.
He tries to make the distinction b/w the contemporaries & future
generations.
2. His works on Shakespeare were devoted not merely to Shakespeare, but to
understanding literature as a whole.
In his Preface to Shakespeare, Johnson rejects the previous dogma (Principles)
of the classical unities and argues that drama should be faithful to life.
Johnson points that Shakespeare is a poet of nature in his first part of preface.
His characters are not generalized the people, but each character is distinctly
generalized, although they present universal passions.
He says that Shakespeare is excellent because of :
True Imitation,
His Characters,
His plots & Stories,
Usage of Language, &
Usage of Genre in his Writings.
3. Nevertheless, Johnson did not only defended on
Shakespeare, he discussed Shakespeare's faults like;
his lack of morality,
his vulgarity,
his carelessness in crafting plots, and
his occasional inattentiveness when
choosing words or word order.
He says that being true to life is not enough because
there is no poetic justice.
Samuel Johnson argues that, Shakespeare has followed
only Unity of Action, But hadn’t followed Unity of time &
place in his dramas.
4. Johnson also finds faults with Shakespeare’s plots &
thinks that they are loosely formed not pursued with
diligence.
Johnson find’s that the missing of “prising the good &
punishing the evil’s” in his writings .
Evil’s won’t be die in Shakespeare’s writings.
Shakespeare doesn't put his efforts where he should
mostly required.
Johnson says that Shakespeare hadn’t get success in
his comic scenes.
Johnson points out that Shakespeare’s set of
speeches are commonly weak.
Repeatedly Johnson finds Shakespeare's tragic
scenes marked by a sudden drop in emotional
temperature caused by some infelicity of language:
a pun, a conceit & a hyperbole .
5. Johnson also finds Shakespeare's guilty of
violated chronology & appearance of true
relating to time & place.
Johnson appreciates Shakespeare’s comedy,
yet he is not blind to his faults, he say’s that
there is a lots of coarseness in his dialogues.
Johnson finds a many of times Unnecessary
repetitions & some dialogues are doesn’t match
to the occasion/situation in his writings.
