2. INTRODUCTION
● The mitral composed of 2 leaflets, chordae tendineae attached with papillary
muscle and annulus.
● Disease process involve any one or more the components may result in
dysfunction of valvular apparatus and prolapse of mitral leaflets towards LA
during systole and LV pressure exceeds LA pressure.
● Also known as floppy or billowing MV.
● It may be associated with other condition such as Marfan’s syndrome,
secundum ASD, Turner’s syndrome or other collagen disorders.
6. ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY
● The MV leaflets have increased tissue and there may be progressive
stretching of these and of the chordae.
● There is risk of endocarditis prophylaxis and complication may develop such
as MR, embolization, arrhythmias and sudden death.
● One or both MV leaflets must billow by at least 2 mm in to the RA during
systole.
● Thickening of involve leaflet to more than 5mm during diastole than only MVP
is visualize.
● In M mode hammock shaped systolic motion of leaflet and AF rhythm is seen.
● Leaflet redundancy is often associated with enlarged mitral annulus and
elongated chordae tendineae.
● In doppler we can see MVP if there is MR present only.
