Amazon Niche Research
This tiny guide is designed to help you find a
profitable niche for your Amazon affiliate store.

2Amazon Niche Research
What is a niche?
A niche is a small segment of a market that occupies a special area of
demand and where the advertising efforts are focused on a small group of
highly targeted consumers.
The strategy of finding market segments that are small but potentially
profitable is called niche marketing or micromarketing.
Niche marketing differs from other online marketing strategies because
allows you to operate in an area with low competition or no competition.
We can say about niche marketing that is the only system capable of filling
up gaping holes in a specific market by targeting the unsatisfied needs of
customers, needs that are usually ignored by those in the upper segments.

How to find hot niches
Understand what people want
In order to locate products that sell online, we need to understand what
people already want to buy. Finding a good choice of idea or product is
always accompanied by interfacing the demand for the product in the current
market and the level of competition or market share that the product will be
having in the long run.
“What should I sell? What products are hot selling? These are the questions
most people are trying to find an answer in order for them to make the definite
decision. And if we really want to know the answer to this question, our only
choice is to do some research.
There are all kinds of twists along the road that may lead you to think you
have a high-demand idea. We must be able to understand and satisfy the
need, wants and expectations of our customers on a certain product that
they’re trying to buy.
This three are called the basic needs or minimum requirements in a purchase.
Needs are the basic reasons or the minimum requirements consumers are
looking for in a product or service. They are called the qualifying or
“gatekeeper” dimensions in a purchase.
Wants are the determining dimensions among many choices. Expectations,
on the other hand, are values or intangibles associated with a product or
service. Expectations are actually part of “wants” but they become extremely
important when products or services are not differentiated.
4Amazon Niche Research
Level of competition
Now, the second thing that must be considered in finding “hot” products to sell
are the level of competition or the market shares do your product will have.
Market share or level of competition means the ratio of your brand sales
versus the total market sales.
While companies would naturally define its target competitors, it is actually the
consumers who ultimately decide the competitive frame, or the list related
products or services that consumers consider when exercising their
purchasing power. We must therefore choose the market segment where we
can have a potential leadership or at least a strong challenger role.
Because the overriding objective of getting into this business is not just to
satisfy the needs and wants of our customers but to do so profitably better
than his competition. Otherwise, our competition will end up satisfying the
customers better than our own interest.
Finding out the general interest level
Third factor to be considered in finding hot selling products is finding out the
general interest level about the product.
General interest in a product helps us to gauge where our demand and
competition numbers fall into the big picture. Simply saying, if there isn’t much
demand for the product, and there isn’t much competition, it would seem that
it might not be good a good put up for sale.
5Amazon Niche Research
But the research doesn’t stop here; there is one last thing to be considered to
exactly find the hot selling products that you’ve been looking for. We must
also learn how others are advertising those products.
If there are a good number of them doing so, it may mean that it’s a good
product to get into. Coming to the last phase of the process is analyzing and
evaluating all the information that has been collected. We have to look at all of
the data we have collected on demand, competition, and advertising, and
make decision as how they all balance out.
Other factors to be measured
And here are several factors or aspects that must be measured:
(a) not enough demand means not enough people are going to buy
(b) too much competition means not enough of a profit to go around
(c) too much advertising drives up the price of pay per click ads, and
competition as well
(d) not enough general interest, combined with low demand, means
there may not be a good market even if there is competition trying to make the
sales.
Researching a niche for Amazon Affiliate
program
You can start your niche research by accessing the Amazon website.
6Amazon Niche Research
Look for deals
Amazon has a “Deals” section that can give you an idea on what you could
promote. Browse through the: all available and upcoming deals tabs and see
if you can find a worthy product. The upcoming deals can help you find some
new products to promote. These products may have less competition, but
you first need to make sure that there is a market for them and there are
people looking to buy that kind of goods.
Also, you need to check if there are plenty of related products that you can
promote, because you will build your entire site around them and if you don’t
have what to promote, you won’t have what to sell and therefore you won’t
make any money.
Browse Categories
If you haven’t found anything to give you an idea for a niche that you could
promote in the "Deals" section, you can start browsing through the main
categories. The probability to find a product with little competition in the main
categories is quite small, so I recommend you to surf as much as possible in
the available subcategories.
Try to aim for products priced $100 and up, with a minimum rating of 50 and a
rating score of not less than 4 stars. These aspects will give you an assurance
that you can get a nice commission from selling the product, that the product
has buyers and that you are promoting a high quality product.
You can also look for ideas on sites like Google Trends, Shopping.com or
eBay.
7Amazon Niche Research
Market and competition analysis
Once you found a product that you think it has some potential, you will want to
see if that product has a market and people interested to buy it.
The best free tool that you can use for this purpose is called Google Keyword
Planner. To be able to use it, you need to have a Google Adwords account. If
you don’t have already a Google Adwords account, you can create one for
free.
Another free tool that you can use to get more ideas from a specific keyword
is called Uber Suggest.
Using Google Keyword Planner
As soon as you registered your Adwords account, go to the keyword planner
page and click on “Search for new keyword and ad group ideas” to expand
that section. You will now see some fields where you can research your
keyword ideas.
The first field allows you to research a specific keyword. Sometimes, you can
find some ideas for keywords from the product title or from its description.
If however the title of the product you intend to promote it is too general, you
can use the second field of the keyword planner tool, more precisely the one
called “Your landing page”. You will need to copy the URL of the product sales
page and paste it into that field. Once you click the “Get ideas” button, the
keyword planner will try to give you keyword suggestions related to the text
from that page.
8Amazon Niche Research
Choosing a domain name
If you have found a niche with low competition, you can drive free high quality
traffic to your site from search engines results.
The best domain names for SEO are .com domains. If you can find a .com
domain, without hyphens and with an exact match for your main keyword, it
would be great.
If you cannot find an exact match .com domain name available, you can
register a .net or .org domain if the .com domain name is registered but not
used (many .com domains are parked, but not used).
I know that this part of finding keywords that fit exactly with an available
domain name will increase your time dedicated to the keyword research
process, but it will worth later.
Fortunately, there is another useful tool that you can use to dramatically cut
the time of this process. This tool is called Bulk Domain Search and allows
you to search for up to 500 domain names at the same time.
So, what you have to do now is to download the suggested keyword list from
Google Keyword Planner and copy and paste those keywords into the bulk
domain search tool.
Before you download the keywords list, you need to make sure that you are
targeting the right location in the keyword planner. The keyword planner tool
allows you to see the search volume for keywords based on specific
locations. If you’re looking to promote products for Amazon.com, make sure
you check the search volume for United States, if you intend to promote
products for Amazon.de, make sure you are looking for the search volume of
that product in Germany, and so on.
9Amazon Niche Research
Filtering the results
I’ll go only for keywords with over 1000 average monthly searches and not
more than 10,000. Keywords below 1000 searches have too little search
volume and those with over 10,000 will have too much competition. Do not be
intimidated if in the "competition" column you will see “high” for many of the
keywords, because this competition refers only to Google Adwords ads.
To export the keywords list from the Keyword Planner tool click on “Download”
tab once the suggestions list is generated and you will be able to download
that list as a .csv file that can be opened with Microsoft Office Excel.
If you don’t have Microsoft Office pack installed, you can select the “Save to
Google Drive” checkbox and then “Open” and the keywords list will be opened
in Google Docs, which looks similar to Excel interface.
After you downloaded the keywords list in Excel or Google Docs, you need to
filter the results by the number of avg. monthly searches.
To achieve this in Google Docs, go to the arrow next to filter view
and click on “Create new filter view”. Next, go to the “Avg. Monthly” column
and click on the icon next to that. Uncheck all the results lower than 1000 and
greater than 10,000 and click the “OK” button. Now you should see only
keywords with monthly searches between these values.
To sort the values from largest to smallest, select the column again, click on
the small arrow that appears when you hover with your mouse the letter
above that column and click on “Sort sheet Z -> A”.
10Amazon Niche Research
For Excel, select the “Avg. Monthly Searches” column by clicking on the letter
above that column, go to “Sort & Filter” and click on “Filter”. Click on the arrow
icon next to “Avg. Monthly Searches”, uncheck all the results lower than 1000
and greater than 10,000 and click the “OK” button.
To sort the values from largest to smallest, select the column again and go to
“Sort & Filter”, click on “Sort largest to smallest”, leave “Expand the selection”
selected and click “Sort”.
Select and copy the remaining keywords after you applied that filter (select
the entire column and press CTRL+C) and paste them into the bulk domain
search field. Select only “com, net and org” checkboxes and click on “Go”.
You should now see a list with all the unavailable domain names and the
available domain names (if any).
If you found few domain names available, do not enjoy yet. First, you need to
remove from your list the domain names that contain trademarks. You don’t
want to be sued later or have your site shut down due that you have breached
the copyright laws.
From the remaining potential domain names, you need to choose the ones
that have a chance to reach the first page of Google. To get an idea of how
high the competition is for your keywords, just go to Google search (.de, .jp,
.es, etc. if you want your site to be found locally).
In the search box type: allintitle:”Your Keyword Here”
This search query will return all the indexed pages that have “Your Keyword
Here” in their title.
Now, look at the number of pages found containing that keywords in the title.
You should see something like: About 9,390 results. If that number is under
10,000, your site has a great change to reach the first page of Google and
means that your chosen niche is reachable.
11Amazon Niche Research
If this number is over 10,000 but is lower than 15,000, you site still has a
decent chance to get to the first page of Google for your keyword.
If that number is over 15,000 but under 20,000 you must analyze the
competition first and then decide if you think that your site is more likely or not
to reach the first Google page.
You can also use the Keyword Ranking Difficulty Check Tool to get an idea on
how easy or hard is to rank for a specific keyword. You need just to enter a
keyword or phrase and this tool will give you an estimate.
However, to make sure you have a chance to get on the first page of Google,
you should check the metrics of the first 10 sites that appear in search results
for the keyword you want to rank.
Check their pagerank, page authority and number of backinks.
The higher their pagerank value , the page authority and number of backlinks,
the harder is for you to surpass them in search engine results.
There are many tools, both free and paid that can ease your niche research
work. Moreover, there are multiple criteria by which affiliates choose their
niches.
I hope this short guide helped you to better understand what niche marketing
is and how you can find keywords for that you can get free traffic from search
engines.

They are called the qualifying or “gatekeeper” dimensions in a purchase. Wants are the determining dimensions among many choices. Expectations, on the other hand, are values or intangibles associated with a product or service. Expectations are actually part of “wants” but they become extremely important when products or services are not differentiated.
  • 4. 4Amazon Niche Research Level of competition Now, the second thing that must be considered in finding “hot” products to sell are the level of competition or the market shares do your product will have. Market share or level of competition means the ratio of your brand sales versus the total market sales. While companies would naturally define its target competitors, it is actually the consumers who ultimately decide the competitive frame, or the list related products or services that consumers consider when exercising their purchasing power. We must therefore choose the market segment where we can have a potential leadership or at least a strong challenger role. Because the overriding objective of getting into this business is not just to satisfy the needs and wants of our customers but to do so profitably better than his competition. Otherwise, our competition will end up satisfying the customers better than our own interest. Finding out the general interest level Third factor to be considered in finding hot selling products is finding out the general interest level about the product. General interest in a product helps us to gauge where our demand and competition numbers fall into the big picture. Simply saying, if there isn’t much demand for the product, and there isn’t much competition, it would seem that it might not be good a good put up for sale.
  • 5. 5Amazon Niche Research But the research doesn’t stop here; there is one last thing to be considered to exactly find the hot selling products that you’ve been looking for. We must also learn how others are advertising those products. If there are a good number of them doing so, it may mean that it’s a good product to get into. Coming to the last phase of the process is analyzing and evaluating all the information that has been collected. We have to look at all of the data we have collected on demand, competition, and advertising, and make decision as how they all balance out. Other factors to be measured And here are several factors or aspects that must be measured: (a) not enough demand means not enough people are going to buy (b) too much competition means not enough of a profit to go around (c) too much advertising drives up the price of pay per click ads, and competition as well (d) not enough general interest, combined with low demand, means there may not be a good market even if there is competition trying to make the sales. Researching a niche for Amazon Affiliate program You can start your niche research by accessing the Amazon website.
  • 6. 6Amazon Niche Research Look for deals Amazon has a “Deals” section that can give you an idea on what you could promote. Browse through the: all available and upcoming deals tabs and see if you can find a worthy product. The upcoming deals can help you find some new products to promote. These products may have less competition, but you first need to make sure that there is a market for them and there are people looking to buy that kind of goods. Also, you need to check if there are plenty of related products that you can promote, because you will build your entire site around them and if you don’t have what to promote, you won’t have what to sell and therefore you won’t make any money. Browse Categories If you haven’t found anything to give you an idea for a niche that you could promote in the "Deals" section, you can start browsing through the main categories. The probability to find a product with little competition in the main categories is quite small, so I recommend you to surf as much as possible in the available subcategories. Try to aim for products priced $100 and up, with a minimum rating of 50 and a rating score of not less than 4 stars. These aspects will give you an assurance that you can get a nice commission from selling the product, that the product has buyers and that you are promoting a high quality product. You can also look for ideas on sites like Google Trends, Shopping.com or eBay.
  • 7. 7Amazon Niche Research Market and competition analysis Once you found a product that you think it has some potential, you will want to see if that product has a market and people interested to buy it. The best free tool that you can use for this purpose is called Google Keyword Planner. To be able to use it, you need to have a Google Adwords account. If you don’t have already a Google Adwords account, you can create one for free. Another free tool that you can use to get more ideas from a specific keyword is called Uber Suggest. Using Google Keyword Planner As soon as you registered your Adwords account, go to the keyword planner page and click on “Search for new keyword and ad group ideas” to expand that section. You will now see some fields where you can research your keyword ideas. The first field allows you to research a specific keyword. Sometimes, you can find some ideas for keywords from the product title or from its description. If however the title of the product you intend to promote it is too general, you can use the second field of the keyword planner tool, more precisely the one called “Your landing page”. You will need to copy the URL of the product sales page and paste it into that field. Once you click the “Get ideas” button, the keyword planner will try to give you keyword suggestions related to the text from that page.
  • 8. 8Amazon Niche Research Choosing a domain name If you have found a niche with low competition, you can drive free high quality traffic to your site from search engines results. The best domain names for SEO are .com domains. If you can find a .com domain, without hyphens and with an exact match for your main keyword, it would be great. If you cannot find an exact match .com domain name available, you can register a .net or .org domain if the .com domain name is registered but not used (many .com domains are parked, but not used). I know that this part of finding keywords that fit exactly with an available domain name will increase your time dedicated to the keyword research process, but it will worth later. Fortunately, there is another useful tool that you can use to dramatically cut the time of this process. This tool is called Bulk Domain Search and allows you to search for up to 500 domain names at the same time. So, what you have to do now is to download the suggested keyword list from Google Keyword Planner and copy and paste those keywords into the bulk domain search tool. Before you download the keywords list, you need to make sure that you are targeting the right location in the keyword planner. The keyword planner tool allows you to see the search volume for keywords based on specific locations. If you’re looking to promote products for Amazon.com, make sure you check the search volume for United States, if you intend to promote products for Amazon.de, make sure you are looking for the search volume of that product in Germany, and so on.
  • 9. 9Amazon Niche Research Filtering the results I’ll go only for keywords with over 1000 average monthly searches and not more than 10,000. Keywords below 1000 searches have too little search volume and those with over 10,000 will have too much competition. Do not be intimidated if in the "competition" column you will see “high” for many of the keywords, because this competition refers only to Google Adwords ads. To export the keywords list from the Keyword Planner tool click on “Download” tab once the suggestions list is generated and you will be able to download that list as a .csv file that can be opened with Microsoft Office Excel. If you don’t have Microsoft Office pack installed, you can select the “Save to Google Drive” checkbox and then “Open” and the keywords list will be opened in Google Docs, which looks similar to Excel interface. After you downloaded the keywords list in Excel or Google Docs, you need to filter the results by the number of avg. monthly searches. To achieve this in Google Docs, go to the arrow next to filter view and click on “Create new filter view”. Next, go to the “Avg. Monthly” column and click on the icon next to that. Uncheck all the results lower than 1000 and greater than 10,000 and click the “OK” button. Now you should see only keywords with monthly searches between these values. To sort the values from largest to smallest, select the column again, click on the small arrow that appears when you hover with your mouse the letter above that column and click on “Sort sheet Z -> A”.
  • 10. 10Amazon Niche Research For Excel, select the “Avg. Monthly Searches” column by clicking on the letter above that column, go to “Sort & Filter” and click on “Filter”. Click on the arrow icon next to “Avg. Monthly Searches”, uncheck all the results lower than 1000 and greater than 10,000 and click the “OK” button. To sort the values from largest to smallest, select the column again and go to “Sort & Filter”, click on “Sort largest to smallest”, leave “Expand the selection” selected and click “Sort”. Select and copy the remaining keywords after you applied that filter (select the entire column and press CTRL+C) and paste them into the bulk domain search field. Select only “com, net and org” checkboxes and click on “Go”. You should now see a list with all the unavailable domain names and the available domain names (if any). If you found few domain names available, do not enjoy yet. First, you need to remove from your list the domain names that contain trademarks. You don’t want to be sued later or have your site shut down due that you have breached the copyright laws. From the remaining potential domain names, you need to choose the ones that have a chance to reach the first page of Google. To get an idea of how high the competition is for your keywords, just go to Google search (.de, .jp, .es, etc. if you want your site to be found locally). In the search box type: allintitle:”Your Keyword Here” This search query will return all the indexed pages that have “Your Keyword Here” in their title. Now, look at the number of pages found containing that keywords in the title. You should see something like: About 9,390 results. If that number is under 10,000, your site has a great change to reach the first page of Google and means that your chosen niche is reachable.
  • 11. 11Amazon Niche Research If this number is over 10,000 but is lower than 15,000, you site still has a decent chance to get to the first page of Google for your keyword. If that number is over 15,000 but under 20,000 you must analyze the competition first and then decide if you think that your site is more likely or not to reach the first Google page. You can also use the Keyword Ranking Difficulty Check Tool to get an idea on how easy or hard is to rank for a specific keyword. You need just to enter a keyword or phrase and this tool will give you an estimate. However, to make sure you have a chance to get on the first page of Google, you should check the metrics of the first 10 sites that appear in search results for the keyword you want to rank. Check their pagerank, page authority and number of backinks. The higher their pagerank value , the page authority and number of backlinks, the harder is for you to surpass them in search engine results.
