Hibbert is described as small and slightly built. Stanhope calls him derogatory names and sees him as weak and insignificant. While others see Hibbert as strange or misunderstood, he is one of the only characters who stands up to Stanhope's aggression, though out of fear. Even when recounting a happy story or smiling for approval, Hibbert's behavior suggests an almost hysterical level of anxiety and lack of control. He responds rudely to Stanhope at the end, showing lingering desire for respect despite Stanhope's mistreatment of him.
1. Hibbert (representseverythingthat Stanhope is afraid of…
because he is also afraid)
ACT 1
Described as ‘small’ and ‘slightly built’
Stanhope calls him a ‘worm’ and an
Weak / insignificant / wiggle out of things / low in the animal chain / hide
underground. Something inhuman about him (according to Stanhope)
Stan = frightened because he wants to run away too… is also a coward and
that’s why he drinks
ACT 2

meaning weird. Little = repeated adjective same as the stage
directions.
Hibbert ‘fiercely’ cries out ‘What the Hell-!’ one of the few characters
who stands up to Stanhope. Aggression = out of fear. The dash
suggestions his anxiety but he still is losing control as the exclamation
mark shows
ACT 3
Tells his story ‘almost screaming with delight’ - even in joy he is
almost out of control. The verb ‘screaming’ implies the near hysterical
behaviour
Shows Stanhope the cards ‘smiling up’ into his face ‘for approval’
Still wants his respect despite how he treated him.
Responds to Stanhope telling him ‘Well you better go to bed’ is rude
to Stanhope after he says he is tired… the pronoun ‘you’ is very
accusatory. Bit childish.
