1. Step 1: plan loads of ideas/quotes
Q = Stan and Ral’s rel. in J’s End
Knew each other in past‘Don’tDennis Me! My name’s Stanhope!’ SECOND
Stanhope is afraid that R will tell home that he’s changed/alcoholic? ‘grabs
letter’ FIRST
Ral arrives = very enthusiastic about war whereas Stan is very experienced
THIRD
Stan doesn’twas Ral there = knows he’ll die (attack is coming)
At the end, when Ral is dying, S calls him ‘Jimmy’ FOURTH
THE WRITER PORTRAYS STANHOPE (S) AND RALEIGH’S (R )
RELATIONSHIP AS ONE THAT IS DRIVEN BY S’S FEAR THAT R WILL
TELL PEOPLE BACK HOME THAT HE’S CHANGED. This can be shown
when he aggressively ‘tears’ the letter from R’s hands. The verb
‘tears’ clearly shows S’s violent and desperate actions as he
frantically tries to prevent R sending the letter home to his sister, to
whom S is engaged. S realises that he cannot go back to what he
used to be in the past and must only exist as a leader to R.
S insists that R call him by his military name: ‘Don’t Dennis me!
Stanhope’s my name!’ ANALYSE… DETAIL… THEN NEXT ONE PQA…
