A disorder is a problem or illness
that affects someone's body or
mind.
4. WHAT IS NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER?
Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of
disabilities that occur due to malfunctioning of the
brain. These emerge at birth or during very early
childhood and affect the individual's
behavior,memory, concentration and ability to learn.
5. WHAT IS ADHD?
ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is a kind of
neurodevelopmental disorder.
Attention-deficit = lack of attention
Hyperactivity = overly active
Children with ADHD have great difficulty attending to task or behave
over actively or impulsively or both.
ADHD often appears before the child starts school and half of them
carry some version of the disorder with them into adulthood.
6. DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA OF ADHD
1. Inattention
a. Fails to give attention
b. difficulty sustaining attention
c. doesn’t seem to listen when spoken directly
d. doesn’t follow instructions
e. difficulty organizing task
f. avoids or dislike to engage in task
g. loses things
h. easily distracted
i. forgetful in activities
7. 2.Hyperactivity and impulsivity
a. fridges with or taps hand or feet
b. often leaves seat
c. runs about or climbs in
d. unable to play or engage in leisure activity
e. always in a restless mood
f. blurts out or answer before the question has been completed
g. difficulty in waiting for his/her turn
h. interrupts or intrudes on others.
The criteria also require the symptoms present prior to 12 years age and
present in two or more settings. The symptoms should be present at
least for six months.
8. PROBLEMS THAT ARISE FROM ADHD:
-problem in attending to task
-problem in showing good judgment
-learning problem
-communication problem
-anxiety
-mood problems
9. ASSESSMENT OF ADHD
-Child's behavior should be observed in several environments
-reports from the child's parents and teachers
-diagnostic interviews
-rating scales
-psychological tests
10. CAUSES OF ADHD
- abnormal activity of neurotransmitter dopamine
and abnormalities in the frontal-striatal
region of the brain
- high levels of stress and family dysfunction
- interpersonal problems
- negative evaluation by parents, peers and own.
