1. GAS PIPELINE PIGGING IN NGC/EOD
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In Oil/Gas industries, pipelines are cleaned periodically to enhance
efficiency, durability, and meet product specification.
It is observed that scales, condensate and other undesirable
materials accompany the product NGC supply to her customers. The
presence of these sediments constitute a serious hazard to gas
handling equipment and ability to service our customers with the right
product.
The recent pigging process in NGC/EOD encountered a lost pig in
the pipeline, if the location is not identified and lost pig efficiently
recovered, it will cause adverse problem to NGC operation and lost of
revenue to NNPC/NGC as the customers may be cut off from Gas
supply.
The guiding questions for this study are:
• What are the benefits of pigging pipeline system?
• How can a lost pig in pipe line be recovered without little or no
interruption of the line?
• How can NGC ensure regular gas supply to customers?
2. Internet and knowledge of the discipline were the two major methods
used to collect data which were collated, analysed and interpreted
using tables and chart.
The findings of this study indicate:
Old approach to pigging
Lack of critical inspection on the pipelines
Equipment breakdown
The use of other rehabilitation methods
Arising from the above findings, it is recommended that NGC
management should:
Apply smart pigging
Undertake critical point inspection
Carry out cathodic protection testing
Increase allocation for Pigging exercise
Educate the operators on the latest technology.
