The document discusses the Bionator, an orthodontic appliance used to extend the lower jaw and correct overbite. It promotes growth of the lower jaw by channelizing natural growth in a forward direction to align the upper and lower incisors correctly. The Bionator is best used between ages 7-10 when the jaw is still developing, and can be used for open bites, Class I and II malocclusions. Standard, open bite, and reversed Bionators are described for different orthodontic issues.
2. Bionator :
is an orthodontic appliance that is used to
extend the lower jaw and correct overbite.
Overbite causes chewing difficulties, tooth
damage and damage to the gums.
The Bionator is used when the lower jaw is
back or posterior to the upper jaw and the
upper teeth jet forward. Its popularity lies
in ease of use for the patient.
3. Purpose of the Bionator
The main purpose of the Bionator appliance is to promote
growth of the lower jaw. It channelizes the natural growth
of dental tissues and bone of the lower jaw in the forward
direction.
This ensures meeting of the upper and lower incisors at
the correct points.
As it corrects overbite, it reduces chewing stress and
damage to teeth and gums
4. INDICATIONS :
o Dental arches well aligned
o Mandible in posterior position
o Skeletal discrepancy not severe
o Labial tipping of upper incisors evident
o Deep bite with accentuated
o Class III where reverse bionator can be
used
o Open bite
5. :
CONTRAINDICATIONS
o Class II โ if caused by max prognathism
o Vertical growth pattern
o Labial tipping of mandibular incisors
6. PRINCIPLES OF BIONATOR THERAPY
o Less bulky than activator
o The essential part of robinโs concept is function whereas for
Balterโs it is the tongue
(which is the center of reflex activity in the oral cavity)
7. Advantages :
o Reduced size
o It can be worn both day and night
o Action faster than activator โunfavorable forces are
avoided acting on dentition for longer time
o Constant wear so more rapid adjustment of musculature
Disadvantage :
o Difficulty in managing it.
o Difficult to stabilize and selective grinding of the appliance
8. What is the ideal age to use a Bionator ?
The bionator used at a young age, at about 7-
10 years when the jaw and muscles are still
under development.
This ensures that the jaw bone and muscles
extend to the required position.
At a later stage when the patient has attained
skeletal maturity it does not provide any
benefit to the structure of the jaw. However, it
does help to change the position of the teeth.
9. Types Of Bionator :
1. Standard Bionator
The standard Bionator is used to slowly move the lower
jaw forward in such a way that the vertical dimension is
not altered. In this acrylic covers both the forward and
back teeth of the lower jaw. It also adjusts the back of
the tongue to lie correctly in the mouth
10. Types Of Bionator :
2. The Open Bite Bionator ( Bionator II )
The Bionator II is designed to correct anterior Open bites
in Class I and Class II malocclusions. The posterior teeth
are covered with acrylic to prevent their eruption. The
acrylic is kept away form the incisors to allow closure of
the open bite. The midline expansion screw can be used
for arch development when it is indicated
11. Types Of Bionator :
3. Reversed Bionator ( Bionator III )
This type of appliance is used to encourage the
development of maxilla.
The bite is taken in most possible retruded position, to
allow labial movement of the maxillary incisors and
reciprocally a slight restrictive effect on the lower arch.
