Previous Experiences:
A- Water Problems:
A-1 Development of a water quality simulation model for the River Nile. ,
This model has been used to deduce management policies to control the Pollution
level in the Nile. Moreover, and based on this model, a computer Package, has been
developed which can be used to monitor the different Water quality parameters in the
Nile. This study has been used by the
Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, Ministry of Industry, Institute of
Fishery and National Research Center in Egypt.
It was Conducted during the period1978_1982 and sponsored by USAID and Ford
Foundation.
A-2 Design and implementation of a computer package for the Management of water
Resource Systems in Egypt (1979_ 1982). The results of this study has been used by the
Ministry of Public Works and Water Resources in Egypt And was sponsored by the
USAID.
A-3 Development of a mathematical model for drainage water quality analysis And estimation
as well as a computerized package helping in drainage Design. (1979_1982). This study
was sponsored by USAID and has been used By the Ministry of Public Works and Water
Resources, Drainage Research Institute.
A-4 Design and implementation of the Data Bank required to store and analyze the data
Concerning drainage water (quantity and quality) in Lower Egypt for the purpose Of reuse
of drainage water for irrigation., The developed model (A3) was used With the data bank
to predict the drainage water quality along the main drains And hence assist in choosing
the most appropriate points for water mixing. The Package has been designed in a user-
friendly form. This study was sponsored by The Academy of Scientific Research and
Technology in Egypt during the period 1982-1983 and has been used by the Ministry of
Public Works and Water resources, Drainage Research Institute.
A-5 Development and implementation of the Master Water Plan Mathematical Models (MWP)
during the period April 1987 to December 1989. The results have been used by Master
Water Plan, Ministry of Public Works and Water Resources in Egypt and was sponsored
by the World Bank. In this project six models have been taken into consideration and
integrated in the developed system. These are:
a) Development and implementation of a data base (using the newly developed
"TURBO BASE") for MWP.
b) Planning distribution model.
c) Lake Simulation model.
d) Flow forecasting model (for which a new model has been developed using the most
Up to date techniques in this field).
e) Steady state stochastic dynamic programming model.
f) Real-time adaptive closed loop operation model.
In these models the following activities and operational requirements have been
fulfilled:
*The models have been installed on the IBM-PC, AT computer of the MWP.
*The six models have been integrated.
*Each model has been designed or converted to a user friendly, menu driven Version that
allows Ministry of Irrigation (MOI) engineers, without experience
In programming, to use these models easily. Menus have been designed in a way which
instruct the user about all possible options of implementing each model, and also guide
to "What to do next" in all stages of implementation.
*The new version of the models include "HELP" options in order to assist the user in
solving problems encountered during runtime of the models.
*An enhanced filing system, or database, have been designed for the input data of each
model.
*Important items of input data have been fed to each model through well Structured
screens which facilitate the checking and correction of any item, Whenever it is needed.
* Outputs of each model have been organized with proper tabulation and graphs.
*The " Steady State Stochastic Dynamic Programming Model" which takes long
Execution time have been redesigned to take care about the following:
a) The program can be frozen at any time and then when reelected the program Will continue
from the point at which interruption has taken place. Thus electricity failure will not
necessitate rerunning the model from the early Beginning.
b) The program monitors all data sets on which the model run. Any change in a data set is
monitored carefully and the system does not allow The user to continue execution on that
set of data if it has been used in a frozen Run. This run has to be started from the
beginning.
* A new forecasting model has been developed. The model allows the user to Update the
system parameters according to the received measurements without Repeating the
calculations. Moreover, it allows the user to chose an appropriate Physical model rather
than giving a fixed system model.
* A complete package of documentation for each model has been given.
* COINS group provided training programs on each model to selected groups of The
MOI engineers.

In these models the following activities and operational requirements have been fulfilled: *The models have been installed on the IBM-PC, AT computer of the MWP. *The six models have been integrated. *Each model has been designed or converted to a user friendly, menu driven Version that allows Ministry of Irrigation (MOI) engineers, without experience In programming, to use these models easily. Menus have been designed in a way which instruct the user about all possible options of implementing each model, and also guide to "What to do next" in all stages of implementation. *The new version of the models include "HELP" options in order to assist the user in solving problems encountered during runtime of the models. *An enhanced filing system, or database, have been designed for the input data of each model. *Important items of input data have been fed to each model through well Structured screens which facilitate the checking and correction of any item, Whenever it is needed. * Outputs of each model have been organized with proper tabulation and graphs. *The " Steady State Stochastic Dynamic Programming Model" which takes long Execution time have been redesigned to take care about the following: a) The program can be frozen at any time and then when reelected the program Will continue from the point at which interruption has taken place. Thus electricity failure will not necessitate rerunning the model from the early Beginning. b) The program monitors all data sets on which the model run. Any change in a data set is monitored carefully and the system does not allow The user to continue execution on that
  • 6. set of data if it has been used in a frozen Run. This run has to be started from the beginning. * A new forecasting model has been developed. The model allows the user to Update the system parameters according to the received measurements without Repeating the calculations.
