Reference - Ming Wei Chan
I have had the pleasure of tutoring Ming Wei Chan in Design Studio in the second year,
first semester, of his bachelor degree 2014.
Ming is an extremely engaged student with an proactive interest in virtually every aspect of
student politics and faculty events. Right from his first semester in first year, Ming was
eager to participate in shaping the current and future environment of both his year
specifically and the faculty more broadly and actively sought out every channel that could
facilitate this interest. He very generously continues to give of his time to accommodate
and enhance the broader student environment. As a consequence, he communicates
confidently with every level of both the student and staff side of the faculty.
As a student, Ming is extraordinarily energetic and industrious with a particular flair for a
very personal, slightly whimsical and poetic experience of architecture. There are never
any preconceived notions of architecture nor any pretentious statements out of touch with
reality - everything is original, critical and with a healthy dose of "not-taking-itself-too-
seriously". There is never a dull moment in his proposals. His architecture could be
summarised as a search for the human, the tangible and the immediate joys in
architecture and I believe this is reflected in his personality.
Ming is well-liked among his peers and respected among the faculty staff. He has a very
open and forthcoming personality, is easy to converse with and is a generally pleasant,
positive and empathic character.
Kind regards
