■ Richard Dyer refers to stereotyping as “a term of abuse” and portrays them more
negatively than positively. He lists and he catagorises the most common groups of
people that are more likely to be stereotyped for example blacks, women and gays. He
says that stereotyping these people is what everyone does and that it is what we all
think of them.
3. Ethnic Stereotypes
French people:
■ Sell onions
■ Wear stripes
■ Wear berets
English people:
■ Gentlemen and ladies
■ Wear top hats
■ Wear bowler hats
■ Play polo and tennis
■ Have walking sticks
■ Drink tea
Jamaican people:
■ Eat jerk chicken
■ Wear colourful hats
■ Have dread locks
■ Bob Marley
This is what we all think about other peoples
ethnic backgrounds and all of these are
stereotypes.These type of stereotypes are
negative as what they are saying what other
people think they do.
