7. Give and receive
When your status is similar/family, you use あげます、もらい
ます or くれます as you have learned before. But if one of the
person’s status is higher than you, you need to use a different
set of verbs.
(私は)友だちに花をあげます
= I give flowers to a friend
(私は)友だちに花をもらいます
= I receive flowers from a friend
友だちが(私に)花をくれます
= A friend gives me flowers
→くださいます
→さしあげます
→いただきます

(私は)先生に花をさしあげます
= I give flowers to a teacher
(私は)部長に花をいただきます
= I receive flowers from a manager
先生が・は(私に)花をくださいます
= a teacher gives me flowers
When your status is higher than the recipient, you use やりま
す
(私は)花に水をやります = I give water to flowers
(私は)犬にえさをやります =I give food to a dog
(私は)子どもにおやつをやります = I give snacks to a child
15. You need て-form when you express give and receive the action.
Be careful whose point of view you are articulating.
私は子どもに本を買ってやります。
= I buy a book for a child.
私は、先生に英語を教えていただきます。
= I have a teacher teach me English
部長は、(私に)食事を作ってくださいます。
= The manager cook a meal for me
コピー機の使い方を教えてくださいませんか。
= Will you kindly show me how to use the photocopier?

16. Noun に Verb – “as a token of”, “in memory of”
私は北海道旅行のお土産に人形を買いました。
= I bought a doll as a souvenir of the trip to Hokkaido.
田中さんが結婚のお祝いにこのお皿をくださいました。
=Mr Tanaka gave this plate as my wedding gift.
