Sports Writing
Professor Michael Rizzo
Director, Journalism Program
Division of Mass Communication
Collins College of Professional Studies
Presentation for October 19, 2020
4. Recap
Consider what’s fair game for sports
reporting
Offer the story subject a chance to
present their side
Be careful about generalities
The only absolute defense for libel
is the truth
Don’t present opinion as fact
6. Take SEVEN minutes to find and
submit to BlackBoard the best visual
storytelling example you saw on your
go-to sports news website that
was posted in the last 24 hours.
Explain briefly how your submission
fulfills what aspect(s) the text
mentioned for great visual
storytelling.
The assignment is in BlackBoard but will close at
10:58 a.m. ET
8. Chapter 10 Visual Storytelling
Keep your backgrounds clean
Faces are what you need to show
But you need to show something
else too.
What is that?
9. Give the audience the “ball”
when the “ball” is connected
to your photo.
But sometimes the “ball” is not
even a ball but still needs
to be in or drawing the
viewer’s eye in the photo.
10. “This photo captures what every great photo hopes to: a
moment in time etched with emotion, reaction, and reality. It
also brings viewers a perspective most could not see on their
own. The setting, the players and the face of the subject of this
baseball memory is powerfully documented for fans to recall for
years to come. (2019 Deadline Club Awards Sports Photo winner)

15. This photo takes the viewer into a real and unique moment of
competition. The angles are exceptional as are the facial
expressions. The photo captures the, literally, gripping and
physical nature of high school wrestling and the unexpected
turn of competition as athletes battle to win.

24. “Visual storytelling involves the use of
graphics, images, pictures, and videos
to engage with viewers in an effort to
drive emotions, engage
intercommunication, and motivate an
audience to action.”
3 Stunning Examples Show Visual Storytelling at Its Best by Dennis Shao
25. Visual storytelling core elements:
•Tension: Motivate people to keep
consuming the story [with the visual].
•Entertainment: Hook them [right away
in a photo and] in the first eight
seconds [of a video].
•Educate: Give information [visually]
so the viewer is better educated on the
topic [and “flesh out the info in the
story].

•Micro-interactions: Ensure that even
the seemingly small and discrete
aspects [of the visual - the movement
of objects, the dynamic [of the visual] -
provide a good experience.
27. Think of visuals beyond just the photo.
Apply video.
Provide infographics.
Apply typography that adds to the
impact of the story
Don’t inundate the viewer – shooting a
very wide shot that shows a lot may
not actually show much.
