DETROIT LIGHT SCULPTURES COMING SOON
Lawrence Tech Students Taking on an Ambitious Project
November 18, 2013 – Southfield, Michigan – Local students at Lawrence Technological
University College of Architecture and Design, under the direction of Professor Steven
Coy, have begun working on a light sculpture to be installed Midtown Detroit. The
students, who have named themselves Larry and Friends Design Co, have been
working all semester on creating concepts for the sculpture, as well as seeking out
fundraising for the project.
With streetlights out in several neighborhoods in Detroit, the students chose to create a
large source of light for the community. Additionally, Larry and Friends Design Co. chose
to utilize a vacant lot, to create more inviting spaces within Detroit’s community.
Midtown Inc. generously extended funding to the students this past week, allowing the
project to take off. The students will work night and day for the next few weeks to create
their sculpture by the funder’s due date. The students will debut the sculpture, titled
Night Light Detroit, at Midtown’s 41st
Noel Night on December, 7, 2013.
“This class has given us an opportunity to work on something that no other class has
ever given us, we can work with an actual client to make something that will have a
community impact,” stated Meredith Harper, a student in Coy’s sculpture class.
Lawrence Technological University’s Graphic Design, Imaging, and Interaction Design
Degree Programs require every student to take fine art class such as sculpture.
Students are given opportunities to learn a variety of mediums to express their creative
ideas. Many graduates are working in industries such as television production, film, and
marketing companies.
