Deck presented during the "Innovating with Mexico" workshop hosted in collaboration with PROMEXICO and Microsoft. Four themes were presented and analyzed to identify innovation and business opportunities in Mexico.
A new wave of micro-businesses is emerging. We are going through turbulent times in which interconnectivity and rising socioeconomic complexity make it increasingly difficult for large corporations to adapt and build long-term strategies. Meanwhile, individuals are leveraging networks, crowd-funding, and new platforms to create informal and micro-enterprises that better respond to, and thrive in, our unstable business environment. Microbusiness is not a niche, but often overlooked and definitely underserved. In most countries it represents over 70% of employment, and is the world's fastest growing sector of the economy as new forms are emerging, like micro-manufacturers and parallel entrepreneurs.
In this workshop we will provide insights into this new wave of micro-businesses and their unmet needs. Then small groups will work together to create services that solve for their specific challenges in new ways. Together we will answer the question: How can we design better services that meet the real needs of today's micro-business?

1. Tech Makes Space for Nursing Mamas
CES teams up with Mamava to provide lactation accommodations for breastfeeding mothers at
the show.
Las Vegas, NV – December 14, 2016 – The Consumer Technology Association (CTA)TM
has
implemented solutions for nursing moms attending CES®
2017. With the desire to provide world
class amenities for all attendees and exhibitors and ensure the comfort of all show attendees,
CES has purchased two Mamava suites to serve as Mother’s Suites onsite to ensure nursing
moms have clean, dignified spaces to pump or feed privately. Owned and produced by CTA,
CES 2017 will run January 5-8, 2016 in Las Vegas, NV.
During CES 2017, Mother’s Suites will be located in the LVCC, South 1 Lobby and The
Venetian, Level 1 in the alcove outside of the Casanova ballroom. Each suite contains a
deadbolt lock for privacy, a power outlet, a fold down table and two benches. CES purchased
these Mamava pods, the first of their kind in Nevada, and will donate them to remain on premise
after the show to support future conventions and events.
“CES is making life a bit easier for breastfeeding mamas on the go, by actively supporting
nursing mothers who are both working and attending the show. We can’t wait to hear feedback
from our mamas at the show!” Sascha Mayer, Mamava CEO and Co-Founder.
“I know from experience that finding a private, clean place to pump or breastfeed is critically
important – and yet, finding these places can be a challenge for working mothers at industry
events and trade shows,” said Allison Fried, director, global event communications, Consumer
Technology Association. “We’re proud to bring these Mother’s Suites to CES and to donate
them afterwards to help address a serious need for working mothers in public spaces.”
Mamava, a Burlington, VT, based company, designs solutions for nursing moms on the go.
Mama founded, women owned, and B Certified, Mamava is the leading expert in lactation
spaces, integrating the biological, physical, and emotional needs of nursing moms into both the
Mamava lactation suites and the Mamava mobile app. Mamava’s freestanding, mobile lactation
suites accommodate working and traveling nursing moms, providing them with a comfortable
and dignified space to pump or feed privately.
Mamava will be exhibiting in BabyTech at CES 2017, launching the new Mamava
mobile app, and new Mamava lactation suite with smart lock technology that integrates with the
app. Also on display at CES will be the new Mamava Mini by Steelcase, a collaboration
between Mamava and Steelcase, a global leader in office furniture, interior architecture and
space solutions. The Mamava Mini provides an alternative for private offices with limited space,
or for facilities with a designated lounge that needs to accommodate multiple pumping moms at
the same time. With a Mamava heart and Steelcase research, insights and design, the Mamava
Mini is a powerful demonstration of user centered design for the 21st century mother.
2. “As a working mother, I am proud to be having this conversation, and even more so to be a part
of a company committed to finding solutions for this overlooked necessity in the workplace,”
said Meghan Raven, Senior Industrial Designer at Steelcase. “Our designs consider human
needs on all levels and breastfeeding is a big part of many women’s daily lives at work. Through
the Mamava Mini concept, new mothers can return to work and be comfortable in a space
specifically designed to make them feel supported while they support the needs of their family
and careers.”
Mamava’s mobile app helps moms to locate Mamava suites on-the-go, as well as
other nursing friendly locations. The new app, launching at CES allows moms to access the
suites, review and rate their experience, while simultaneously serving-up sponsored content and
personalized data. Expanding its mission to make breastfeeding more accessible through both a
digital and analog footprint, Mamava is growing daily with more than 150 suites installed
throughout the United States.
Stop by Mamava’s Booth BT110 in BabyTech to see the new lactation suite, and hear Sascha
Mayer speak on the Get Pumped for 21st Century Breastfeeding panel on January 6, 2017.
About Mamava
Mamava, based in Burlington, Vermont, was incubated at Solidarity of Unbridled Labour
(formerly JDK Design), a world-renowned design studio. Mamava creates design solutions for
nursing mothers on the go. We believe that a woman should be able to breastfeed her baby
anywhere she wants to, and we also know there is a need, especially in high-traffic public areas,
for a private and comfortable place to use a breast pump or nurse. Mamava is mama owned,
made in America, and a proud member of the B Corp community. The free Mamava app for
iPhone and Android allows moms to search for pumping and breastfeeding friendly locations.
