process,	providing	coaches	with	easy,	almost	unlimited	access	to	
poten@al	recruits.	Coaches	can’t	make	contact	via	social	media	un@l,	in	
most	cases,	an	athlete’s	junior	year.	But	they	can	check	a	social	media

In	college	athletes	represent	theirs	schools,	so	recrui@ng	is	taken	very	
seriously		
	“There	are	a	lot	of	people	recruited	to	a	lot	of	different	sports	who	are	
certainly	being	weeded	out	based	on	the	character	displayed	on	their	social	
media	pos@ngs,”	said	Carnahan.	“Coaches	don’t	have	the	@me	to	sit	down	
with	you.	They	have	10	other	kids	here	with	similar	(stats).	I’m	going	to	talk	
with	these	other	10	kids	here	who	don’t	post	explicit	photos	on	social

The	Society	for	Human	Resource	Management	(SHRM)	surveyed	its	members	
in	2008,	2011	and	2013	on	the	use	of	social	media	for	employee	recruitment	
and	selec@on.	Its	2013	study	revealed	that	77	percent	of	respondent	
companies	use	social	networking	sites	to	recruit	candidates	for	specific	jobs,	up	
from	56	percent	in	2011	and	34	percent	in	2008

Using	the	example	of	Jus@ne	Sacco,	as	explained	in	new	york	@mes	ar@cle,	
one	bad	tweet	led	to	her	life	unraveling	“she	just	felt	personally	humiliated.	
And	despite	her	near	invisibility	on	social	media,	she	was	s@ll	ridiculed	and	
demonized	across	the	Internet.	Sacco	says	“Anything	that	puts	the	spotlight	
on	me	is	a	nega@ve.”
