 Botanical name :
Myristica fragnans.
 English name :
Nutmeg
 Family : Myristicaceae

 Nutmeg fruit is the
only which gives two
spices.

Both spices smell and
taste similar , but
nutmeg is slightly

5. CULTIVATIONS
 These are grown
from fresh seeds.
 Germinate in about
5 weeks.
 Transplanted at 6
month old.

can be determined
in 5-8 years.

CHARACTERS
 SHAPE : Broadly oval.
 LENGTH : 2-3 cm.
 BREADTH : 2 cm.
 COLOUR : Brown / greyish brown ,
reticulated and furrowed.
 ODOUR : Strong and aromatic pungent.
 TASTE : Slightly bitter.
 Longitudinal section has a lustrous. Dark
brown perisperm penetrate light . Brown
endosperm folding branching perisperm
has fibrovascular bundles.

10. COLLECTIONS
 Obtain fruit from 8-9 years .
 To mature it takes about 20-30 years.
 Fruit is like peach.
 When ripe, expose the seed with its
lobed red arillus.
 2 or 3 caps are collected annually.

 Nutmeg are dried in shells.
 Large quantities are dried in ovens
and in brick buildings are placed on
tray over low charcoal fires.
 Kernel is free from seed coat [ bristtle
testa ]
 Testa is cracked by special machine.
 After cracking nutmegs are graded
and sized.

gastritis and indigestion ailments.
