2. 2014 MDEA Lifetime
Achievement Award
MDEA Honors an Industry Luminary
In recognition of the crucial role that
Dean Kamen has played in medical
device innovation the entire UBM
Canon Medical Content Team and
the MD+DI Editorial Advisory Board
have selected him as the recipient
of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement
Award. This award goes to an
individual whose contributions over a long career in medical devices have had
a significant and demonstrable impact on technological, business, and cultural
advancements in the world. There’s no question that Dean Kamen fits that bill.
Previous recipients include medtech pioneers Dr. Robert Langer (2013); Dr.
Thomas Fogarty (2012); and Alfred E. Mann (2011).
Dean Kamen, Founder, DEKA Research & Development Corp.
Kamen is an inventor, an entrepreneur, and a tireless
advocate for science and technology. He holds more than
440 U.S. and foreign patents, many of them for innovative
medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of health
care worldwide. Kamen invented the first wearable infusion
pump and the first wearable insulin pump for diabetics.
Some of the many devices he’s worked on include the
HomeChoice™ peritoneal dialysis system, Hydroflex™
surgical irrigation pump, the Crown™ stent, the iBOT™ mobility device, and
the Segway® Human Transporter. Kamen was awarded the National Medal of
Technology, the Lemelson-MIT Prize, and has been inducted into the National
Inventors Hall of Fame. DEKA Research’s robotic prosthetic arm was recently
approved by FDA.
I like to think I’m just getting going, doing more, and
working harder all the time. I like to look forward not backwards. I
hope [this award] does not turn out to be the pinnacle of the work
being done by anybody here at DEKA. I hope it just incentivizes us
to do more and better work in the future.
— Dean Kamen, Founder, DEKA Research & Development Corp.
What most impresses about Dean Kamen is his
restless imagination. He hasn’t specialized; he just sees problems
and innovates ways to fix them. It doesn’t matter if the issue is
getting around, drug infusion or prosthetics. He loves the elegant,
inventive insight. And he invests in making it happen more often,
through FIRST, the program he founded for student inventors. The
MDEA’s are all about that “a-ha moment,” and Kamen is a most
fitting capstone for the program.
— Pamela Moore, SVP Content & Strategy, UBM Connect
3. Meet the Jurors
Judging of each year’s MDEA competition is
conducted by an independent, multidisciplinary, and
impartial panel of jurors—comprised of a balance
of clinicians, engineers, and designers—who are
selected by a group of editors from UBM Canon. The
editors look for jurors with a solid experience in and
knowledge of the medical device industry who will add depth and diversity
of expertise to the judging process. The jurors carefully review all of the
submissions and narrow them down to a select group of exceptional products
in each of the 11 categories. MDEA jurors—past and present—have set a high
standard for judging excellence and fair competition.

14. The BMEidea competition was established in 2004 by the National Collegiate
Inventors and Innovators Alliance. The NCIIA is a higher education network
that cultivates revolutionary ideas and promising inventions. For nearly twenty
years, NCIIA has been a not-for-profit leader in funding, training and coaching
that brings student innovations to market. Inventions created by NCIIA grantees
are reaching millions of people in more than 50 countries and helping to solve
some of our greatest 21st century challenges.
Now in its tenth year, BMEidea recognizes the finest student biomedical
innovations from colleges and universities across the nation. The competition’s
judges rank entries on all aspects of biomedical commercialization, from
product innovation to market need, and from regulatory strategies to social
impact. The winning entries solve a pressing clinical problem; meet technical,
economic, legal, and regulatory requirements; feature a novel and practical
design; and show potential for commercialization. The experience of
entering the BMEidea competition not only prepares students for biomedical
engineering careers, but also connects them to key contacts in the industry
and in their own academic institutions.
