PG10
It has been a year since I joined South Deep and time has flown.
2015 had its own challenges and triumphs.
Looking back at the past 12 months,
we can proudly say that we have made
many improvements at our operation.
We introduced Safety incident
management and advocated for
everyone to be responsible in his or
her area of responsibility. This yielded
a positive Safety performance
later in the year, when we
had a full injury free calendar
month in November.
If we continue to advocate
accountability and take
precautions while working, I believe that we will break more
Safety records this year.
The South Deep Operational Strategy was developed in
2015 to focus on key challenges impacting South Deep
business performance. Amongst others, skills development
was identified as a critical project for achieving sustainable
business improvement. The project is phased approached,
starting with artisan’s training, and followed by operator
and supervisor’s training. I am committed and excited to
keep you well informed on the progress of projects to be
executed.
During the last two quarters of 2015, we saw an upward
trend in our production; we ended 2015 on a high note by
exceeding our monthly plan by 112%. It is only appropriate
that I congratulate everyone on their hard work and
dedication during the December production month. It was
our best production month in 2015.
I hope we will continue with a positive attitude, spirit of
dedication and teamwork to keep breaking records this
year. Let us make South Deep a company that everyone
wants to be part of. We can only do that if we continue
working hard and producing gold safely.
In closing, I would like to wish all of our colleagues a safe,
productive and prosperous year ahead. I am confident that
South Deep will achieve strong operating performance
during 2016 and develop the foundation necessary to
support the company’s cash neutral aspiration (break-even).
The road ahead points the way to success. I hope you will
join me on the journey with enthusiasm, energy and a can-
do attitude.

Bonus Scheme: Your thoughts
Seipone spoke to some employees about the newly implemented Bonus Scheme
The new Bonus Scheme was launched on 15 July 2015 to support South Deep’s goal of being a sustainable and successful mine. It also addressed
a call from unions and employees to review the new scheme. According to this scheme, individual crews are responsible for their own success
and bonus-earning potential. However, it is important to remember that we all need to work together as a team to achieve our objectives. Another
fundamental change is the inclusion of all employees.
Mafora Murwa
Diesel Mechanic Learner
“I am very happy with the production bonus.
I am even more happy about the fact that
it includes everyone, even learners. This
indicates that South Deep cares about all
its employees. They believe in the future
employees of the mine.”
Winston Mogotsi
Supervisor ETD
“It’s a good thing for employees to be
incentivised. This is also a good method
of motivating us to work hard and be more
productive.”
Princess Sello
Shaft Onsetter
“I am not used to getting a bonus, but for
the past three months I have been very
happy. This serves as a motivation for me to
continue working hard and safely”
Bertus Grenfell
Engineering Shaft
“The monthly bonus is a good thing but the
fact that the amount is not the same is very
concerning. For example, trackless people
get more money. I am surface engineer and I
get couple of hundred rands, while trackless
people get thousands of rands. We are all
working for the same mine; we are all doing
important jobs on the mine.”
New Maxus rolled out
at South Deep
“The new Maxus system has the ability to detect another
locomotive coming in an opposite direction. As a result,
our operators will be more alert and cautious when driving
the new locos,” says Neo Molefe, TM3 Training HOD.
“We hope that by introducing these new systems, we will
prevent accidents.”
Reitumetse Pitseng, Locomotive Operator, shared his
views about Maxus: “The system is user-friendly and I am
happy about the fact that it uses images to communicate
with the operator.”
Neo adds that the Maxus systems will be rolled out
throughout the mine. He encourages operators to follow
and familiarise themselves with the key control procedure
for the locos and all trackless mobile machinery.
South Deep locomotives now all boast new
Maxus systems. These are fully integrated
locomotive safety management systems
designed specifically for underground rail-
bound equipment. To date, 110 locomotive
drivers and 13 electricians have been
trained and found competent.

FOCUS ON PEOPLE
This scheme gives our employees a chance to buy
or rent decent, good quality and affordable homes
close to the mine. Employees in the C upper band
and below may qualify to be home owners according
to the rules of the scheme. South Deep would like
employees to have a place they can call ‘my home’ at
the end of each shift.
The scheme will help to make this dream a reality
by providing financial assistance and advice to
employees. Employees may continue with their
current living arrangements but are invited to take
advantage of this new opportunity.
Currently, 150 houses are being built in Westonaria
and are to be completed in quarter one of 2016.
This year South Deep signed a ground-
breaking wage agreement with organised
labour. One aspect of this wage agreement
is the Tswelopele Home Ownership Scheme.

FOCUS ON SAFETY
South Deep’s Head of SHEQ, Stuart Sepetla talks to Seipone about key Safety
issues in 2015 and the plans for 2016
We continue to experience improvement in our Safety performance. We ended 2015 with a
fatality-free half year. Regrettably, two of our colleagues were fatally injured during the first
half of 2015. As a mine, we are committed to the safety of our employees. This is evident in
our reduction of total injuries from 167 in 2014 to 68 injuries in 2015.
Safety focus
The Safety culture at South Deep was always reactive. This meant that we did not do enough to identify incidents before
they happened. When the new VP Adriaan de Beer started at South Deep at the beginning of 2015, he introduced
fundamental principles of behaviour-based incident management. These principles are based on an incident management
system. It focuses on taking proactive measures to ensure that people are aware of any risk within their workplaces and
can pro-actively deal with them before they result in accidents.
This initiative can be affirmed by a significant improvement
in 2015’s Safety performance with 68 total injuries
compared to 167 in 2014, which represents a 60%
decrease. This means that there has been a change in our
people’s behaviour. To support this, we also introduced
a two key Safety initiatives namely the Ukuphepha (Zulu
word meaning ‘to be safe’) competition focusing on
workplace conditions, as well as prevention of injuries. We
also introduced the Qaphela (Xhosa / Zulu word meaning
‘watch out’) initiative, which focuses on raising Safety
awareness, at work, at home and on the roads during the
silly season.
The Qaphela Safety competition promotes participation
from employees. Through a process of adjudication,
employees stand a chance to win great prizes for good
Safety performance. This campaign will run until the end of
March 2016 and the winner will receive a Chevrolet Spark.
These campaigns also contributed to enhanced Safety
performance in 2015 and our recorded improvements.
Both these initiatives encourage employees to participate,
take ownership, encourage safe behaviour practice and
entrench a Safety culture at South Deep.
We have also launched a quarterly wellness campaign to
demonstrate that we care and are committed to the well-
being of our employees.
Our focus for the new year will be to continue to be
proactive in our Safety efforts and to conduct a Safety
drive for the Easter holiday period. We will also work
hard to improve occupational health and Safety systems
to provide us with timeous information through which
management and supervisors make proper decisions.
Our journey towards a safe South Deep would not have
been possible without the support of stakeholders such
as the Department of Mineral Resources, organised
labour etc. We continue to value their input in our journey.
I would like to also thank the South Deep team for your
continued support during 2015. I wish you a safe and
healthy 2016.

health and wellness campaign
South Deep celebrates
According to Petrus Mofokeng, Unit Manager, Occupational Health: “This was a well-supported initiative. Employees
came out in numbers to support this worthy cause.”
South Deep EXCO members got behind the initiative, and led by example by checking their health status. The
Environmental Engineering department also came out in numbers.
Between Monday and Friday, prizes were handed out to lucky employees who participated in a health and wellness raffle.
The lucky employees walked away with microwaves, portable ovens/stoves, toasters, kettles and much more.
This was an all-inclusive event, even involving the community. Participants received hampers with health-related goodies
as tokens of appreciation for taking the initiative to learn about their health status.
The campaign coincided with announcement that the wellbeing programme at the clinic will be operating daily. It was
emphasised that employees must visit the clinic for malaria prophylaxis before going home for the Christmas break.
Prevention is always better than cure.
On 7 December 2015, South Deep launched a health and wellness campaign in partnership with
various players in this arena. They included the Sizabantu non-governmental organisation (NGO),
the Department of Home Affairs, CHAPS (a NGO promoting male circumcision), Kaelo for EAP
(counselling on health issues) and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).

Building positive
community relationships
South Deep recognises the importance of developing a positive relationship with the communities in which it works
The Community Relations department has been hard at
work holding regular engagements and meetings with local
communities to build strong community relationships. The
team is working closely with these communities to identify
needs and areas of concern to ensure that we reach
common ground in addressing these issues.
The last meetings were conducted in the communities
of Westonaria, Simunye and Bekkersdal. Community
members were given and introduced to the grievance
mechanism that should be used when they want to raise
community grievances and concerns. The key issues
that our communities are concerned about include
development, their relationship with the mine, how they
benefit from our operation and the accessibility of mine
resources e.g. tenders.

Mining houses and the local municipality form an Alliance to address community development issues in Greater Westonaria
During 2014 Gold Fields and Sibanye Gold recognised
the need to work together to forge a strong working
relationship with the municipality and residents of Greater
Westonaria to address their needs.
The Sibanye-Gold Fields Alliance was formed to share
information and jointly support local development.
By coming together, the two companies’ Boards of
Directors hope to provide an institutional framework for
community representatives, the municipality and the two
mining houses to craft a shared approach to the district’s
development goals and to pursue them together.
The Seriti Institute was invited to submit a proposal for
a developmental intervention that would bring immediate
improvements to the quality of life of the people in
Westonaria. Bekkersdal and Simunye were identified to
be the first communities for the pilot project which will be
extended to other areas in months to come.
