Creativity can be summarized in 3 sentences:
Creativity involves seeing connections others have missed and generating novel and useful solutions (Boone and Hollingsworth, 1990; Wycoff, 1995; Singh, 1985). However, creativity is not just a innate trait but depends on the person, task, and environment in an integrated way. True creativity also involves risk, collaboration with others, and being open to failure rather than requiring an elevated plane of existence.
4. Action that leads to solutions that are novel, useful,
and predictable

CREATIVITY
What you think about creativity is probably wrong.
Left Brain Right Brain, Born like that, completely new ideas
I’m here to share three myths and three truths about creativity.
I hope to do it creatively. What does that even mean though?
Does creative mean different, new, unique? Yes, well maybe.
There’s not a widely accepted definition, which seems fitting.
Note solutions to problems, connections, change
I’m going to challenge three myths and present three truths for you to consider.
What I want you to do is learn something new that’s going to help you in your work. That means you’re going to have to remember something and do it.
It's a skill, and like most skills our personality (and maybe genetics) can make it easy or hard to learn.
Are you comfortable with change? Do you like to challenge ideas? These make creativity more natural.
Anyone can be creative.
Person: Are you comfortable with change? Do you like to challenge ideas? Do you practice the skill of exploration and questioning? These make creativity more natural.
Environment: Are you allowed to try new things? Are you inviting others to try new things? Is the environment safe and free of judgment? Relaxed, stimulating environments make creativity more likely.
Task: Does the task have room for flexibility? Is it something you care about. If you are excited or passionate about a problem or task, you’re more likely to engage in creativity.
Invention is one type of creativity. Synthesis, extension, and duplication are others.
Invention: Something brand new.
Synthesis: Combining ideas from various sources into a new whole. In planning a conference we took elements from church camps, OU’s camp crimson, and the CDC. Think of it as a recipe.
Extension: Expanding an idea into a new application. Libraries stole the drive through idea and started having book drops.
Duplication: Copying a good idea from others. Ohio is doing it this way, we should do it here.
Where can you look for new ideas?
OU Residential colleges have turned the idea of campus housing on it’s heads. They’re building these in Norman right now. They’re not dorms, they’re better.
Large dining halls with long tables. Student living, faculty living, classrooms, and common areas.
Faculty will serve as Senior fellows, basically like the heads of house.
Each college has a crest. They will compete for points and form unique traditions.
Where did they get their ideas? Hogwarts.
No.
Well, sort of. It helps to be relaxed, have an open mind, and a stimulating environment.
Disrupt patterned thinking.
Every time I sit down to do creative work, I change my wallpaper.

Exercise… Imagine your workspace. You have a problem that needs solving. You’ve written down. Now, what can you do to create a peaceful, stimulating environment?

Exercise… Imagine your workspace. You have a problem that needs solving. You’ve written it down. Now, what can you do to create a peaceful, stimulating environment? In your notes, write some ideas.
Get up and go for a walk, taking the written problem with you. Music. Lights. Get up and spin a round.
Your goal is to disrupt your patterned thinking.
If you remain in your normal your thinking will remain normal.
Practice the failure bow.
Know you failed.
Ask what did we learn?
Most ideas/solutions come from liquid networks.
The Enlightment coincided with the first English coffee houses.
Issac Newton, John Locke, Galileo
Very few great ideas were found alone in a room. Ideas need to breathe and bounce around and evolve.
What’s this mean to you? Share it and let it go.
