…and I’m April Eden. Today, we’re going to
meet a couple who are about to become
“empty-nesters” in a great big house…
KELLY OC:
Yes, They could really use a warm and
welcoming space where they can cozy up
and read a good book.
CAT OC:
So, we’re here to transform their study into
just that...
Let’s meet Alan and Rebecca.

I remember the day when we bought this
property... it was a snowy day… an absolute
auction… hardly anybody showed up… and
it got to the very maximum end of our
money, and I shot my hand up… and I
looked at you…
Rebecca OC:
…and nobody else bid, and we got it. So
then, we all went “AAAAAAHHH!” And
Natalie went “Dad, what have you done?”
So, we bought it and then we started
building. And, Natalie was just little… she
was only 10 or 11… So, she’s sort of been
in the process the whole time.
Rebecca OC:
We didn’t have house plans… and, uh, we
had a friend who is a builder and he was…
(cutting out the part about talking to other
people) very agreeable to letting us drag in
all this stuff that I drug in and incorporating
it the way we wanted to into the house… so
we sort of did our own house plan and used
all this salvaged stuff

um, it’s going to be odd though to have

So, you guys have done an amazing job
with the house…
ALAN & REBECCA OC:
Well, thank you…
CAT OC:
But, I think we can all agree that the study
is the one room that can use a little stylish
update.
REBECCA OC:
I would agree. Definitely.
ALAN OC:
Uh, huh… very good.
CAT OC:
What is it about the study that you love?
REBECCA OC:
The thing that I do like is that we’ve got our
family pictures in there... it’s cozy.
ALAN OC:
In one of those pictures, the eyes follow
you… what is up with that?
REBECCA OC:
That’s my great grandmother’s portrait…
CAT OC:

And, it is a lot of warm golds, some soft
reds, and some sage greens. And, it’s going
to give a little bit of a French Country look.
And, so when we are done it’s going to look
a lot like this…

And there’s a little trick to this design,
because everything in the room is either
going to be reversible or interchangeable.
REBECCA OC:
That’s really neat!
ALAN OC:
That’s cool…
KELLY OC:
Yes, and Alan, you and I have an easy
project to tackle. We’re going to take a
couple of fabrics to create a faux slipcover
for your chair... and then, Natalie, you
and I are going to add some treatments to
the bookcases to give them a whole new
look as well..
NATALIE OC:
Okay…
ALAN OC:
So I can hide stuff there, right?

Yes, you sure can!

LT: April Eden… well. We are going to be making these

okay?
ALAN OC:
No problem.. No, she can handle that…
KELLY OC:
Great, well, great.. cuz I need your help to
do the, ah, Faux Slipcover…
ALAN OC:
Faux… what is a Faux Slipcover?
KELLY OC:
Well, glad you asked… a Faux Slipcover is
basically… our slipcover is not going to be
for the entire chair. Okay. We are only
going to slipcover the center of our chair…

KELLY OC:
Isn’t that nice? (yeah!) And we are very
fortunate because, the fabric that you guys
already have, it’s in great condition. And, it
looks wonderful, it’s a nice woven durable
fabric. And, it’s great that it’s on the arms,
and that it’s durable. So… and it looks
good with the fabric.
ALAN OC:
That’ll be really pretty…
KELLY OC:
Alright… You like it?
ALAN OC:
Yeah
KELLY OC:
Alright, well… what we are going to do to
get started. Actually, April was so kind
enough to go ahead and do our runner for
our slipcover.

And another thing… a tip, for making

measure you want to measure the top of

of inches on the side… because you see how
it’s larger at the top, skinnier at the bottom.

Alan OC:
Alright…
KELLY OC:
But, as you can see we have a little extra
fabric up here... Not a problem. All we are
going to do is fold in, and then back. And
then you will have this nice little detail on
each side… okay? And then we’ll just top
stitch that or hand stitch it… okay? (ALAN
OC: okay…) and you know what, I’ll do
that.
Alan OC:
Very good, very good, you’ll do that a little
later then?
KELLY OC:
Yes I will…
KELLY OC:
So now… We’re gonna get started on our
seat cushions now, or actually the seat
cushion. So, if you don’t mind handing me
that… yep, that’s great! (This?) That’s
right… Yeah!
KELLY OC:
Now April was once again kind enough again
to make our runner for this… so… But.
Basically, this is a very easy, uh, step…
(cutting out the fumble with the stapler)
You want to measure all the way around
your seat cushion… (cutting out) so you
have about 53 inches and you want to add
yourself a couple of inches to that for seam
allowance. (Okay.)

definitely has that French Country feel to it.
And, you know, I can’t wait to see it in the

ALAN OC:
Well, I can take it up there…

22 APRIL OC: Rebecca, I’ve hear you’ve done
a little bit of sewing in your past.
REBECCA OC:
Actually I did… I used to sew a lot, but not
in this house… not too much.
APRIL OC:
Well, you will in your study. That will be
your, your new project!
REBECCA OC:
Good!
APRIL OC:
So we are going to make some reversible
curtains today… um, on one side we are
going to have this more kind of cozy check.
And then on the other side we are going to
have.. it’s a bit of a cheery plaid.
REBECCA OC:
Okay, how are we going to make it
reversible?
APRIL OC:
Well’s what we are going to do is we are just
going to make panels out of each of the
fabrics, then we are just going to sew them
together… and then on the top we are
going to put this trim or gimp to attach it we
are going to make little loops and then just
attach it to your curtain rod. So…
REBECCA OC:
Oh, good.
April demos measuring
window with drawing
with precut pieces of
our fabric
23 APRIL OC:
Very, very simple project. Now the first
thing that you do when you are going to
make curtains is to decide what kind you
want to make. I have these little
demonstrations here…
REBECCA OC:
Little doll curtains… those are cute.
8/24/15
13
203 Additional cutaways of
drawing and curtains at
09:47:05
APRIL OC:
Yeah, very, very effective… Like I said there
are several different kinds of curtains that
you can make. Several different ways that
you can measure.
April continues to demo
measuring with drawing
24 APRIL OC:
The simplest way that I’ve found is to
measure from the top of where you are
going to want to hang your curtain rod –
down. Some people when the go to take
their measurements they’ll measure from
the window, but… then you have a few more
inches for your curtain rod so it isn’t the
length that you want it to be. So, these ones
kind of pool on the floor, these are drapes
that will just kind of… more elegant.
(REBECCA OC: Okay) Here’s just, you
know, floor length ones. Okay?
REBECCA OC:
Okay, and I think that’s what the drawing
has, is that right?
APRIL OC:
Yep, that’s what we are doing in yours…
exactly. So, and then you can have your
little café curtains, you know, whatever ones
you want to make.
REBECCA OC:
Okay.
April demo-ing taking
width measurment on
drawing… and demo-
ing fullness with pieces
of fabric.
25 APRIL OC:
Um, go ahead and take your measurements
for your length that way. Um, Now for your
width, though… um, you want to measure
from… like I said from your curtain rod not
necessarily from the window. And t his is
the part where you decide our fullness of
your curtain… if you want it to be flat and
tailored, or more gathered… for yours we
are actually going to do a standard, which is
1 and a half times the width.
8/24/15
14
REBECCA OC:
Okay.
APRIL OC:
So… and always remember you have to
make your seam allowances. So, 1-inch to
the length and 1-inch to the width.
REBECCA OC:
Okay

And you’ve got that so let’s…
REBECCA OC:
So we have to allow for match patterns and
things too, but this probably not too bad.
APRIL OC:
Um, yeah, with this, this is pretty easy. But
if you have a pattern just size it up where
your pattern center is going to be and then,
uh, cut it out. So… I’ve already taken our
measurements. Let’s start cutting.

Okay, Natalie, as you can see, I have gone

as our guide for our next panel. Now, um,
we are using a floral print. One thing that
you want to keep in mind when you are…
you want to line up your flowers as much as
possible… when you fold in an inch, it’s
going to make your pattern off… so, just
always keep that in mind when you are
working with a floral.

Okay.

So, to get started, like I’ve said, I’ve already

just fold in… and we use a fusible tape,
which is a great product. Because it, it,
adher… bonds your fabric…
NATALIE OC:
With heat?
KELLY OC:
Yes with heat… it’s wonderful!
NATALIE OC:
Okay.
KELLY OC:
So what we’ll do is, we’ll fold in one side
about an… oh, an inch… (NATALIE OC:
Okay) and then we will go ahead and press
it lightly to go ahead and give us a crease.
And, then we will use our fusible tape, put it
in place… and then we use a press cloth to
bond it. Okay? Alright!

(ALAN OC: okay…) and you know what, I’ll do that. Alan OC: Very good, very good, you’ll do that a little later then? KELLY OC: Yes I will… KELLY OC: So now… We’re gonna get started on our seat cushions now, or actually the seat cushion. So, if you don’t mind handing me that… yep, that’s great! (This?) That’s right… Yeah! KELLY OC: Now April was once again kind enough again to make our runner for this… so… But. Basically, this is a very easy, uh, step… (cutting out the fumble with the stapler) You want to measure all the way around your seat cushion… (cutting out) so you have about 53 inches and you want to add yourself a couple of inches to that for seam allowance. REBECCA OC: Actually I did… I used to sew a lot, but not in this house… not too much. APRIL OC: Well, you will in your study. That will be your, your new project! REBECCA OC: Good! APRIL OC: So we are going to make some reversible curtains today… um, on one side we are going to have this more kind of cozy check. And then on the other side we are going to have.. it’s a bit of a cheery plaid. REBECCA OC: Okay, how are we going to make it reversible? APRIL OC: Well’s what we are going to do is we are just going to make panels out of each of the fabrics, then we are just going to sew them together… and then on the top we are going to put this trim or gimp to attach it we are going to make little loops and then just attach it to your curtain rod. So… REBECCA OC: Oh, good. April demos measuring window with drawing with precut pieces of our fabric 23 APRIL OC: Very, very simple project. Now the first thing that you do when you are going to make curtains is to decide what kind you want to make. I have these little demonstrations here… REBECCA OC: Little doll curtains… those are cute. 8/24/15 13
  • 14. 203 Additional cutaways of drawing and curtains at 09:47:05 APRIL OC: Yeah, very, very effective… Like I said there are several different kinds of curtains that you can make. Several different ways that you can measure. April continues to demo measuring with drawing 24 APRIL OC: The simplest way that I’ve found is to measure from the top of where you are going to want to hang your curtain rod – down. Some people when the go to take their measurements they’ll measure from the window, but… then you have a few more inches for your curtain rod so it isn’t the length that you want it to be. So, these ones kind of pool on the floor, these are drapes that will just kind of… more elegant. (REBECCA OC: Okay) Here’s just, you know, floor length ones. Okay? REBECCA OC: Okay, and I think that’s what the drawing has, is that right? APRIL OC: Yep, that’s what we are doing in yours… exactly. So, and then you can have your little café curtains, you know, whatever ones you want to make. REBECCA OC: Okay. April demo-ing taking width measurment on drawing… and demo- ing fullness with pieces of fabric. 25 APRIL OC: Um, go ahead and take your measurements for your length that way. Um, Now for your width, though… um, you want to measure from… like I said from your curtain rod not necessarily from the window. And t his is the part where you decide our fullness of your curtain… if you want it to be flat and tailored, or more gathered… for yours we are actually going to do a standard, which is 1 and a half times the width. 8/24/15 14
  • 15. REBECCA OC: Okay. APRIL OC: So… and always remember you have to make your seam allowances. So, 1-inch to the length and 1-inch to the width. REBECCA OC: Okay 103 / 203 April and Rebecca getting out fabric to cut, tape measure 09:50:12 - :50:53 Cutting montage :05 26 APRIL OC: And you’ve got that so let’s… REBECCA OC: So we have to allow for match patterns and things too, but this probably not too bad. APRIL OC: Um, yeah, with this, this is pretty easy. But if you have a pattern just size it up where your pattern center is going to be and then, uh, cut it out. So… I’ve already taken our measurements. Let’s start cutting. REBECCA OC: Alright.
