WOAH 14 WEEKS HAS PASSED BY SO FAST !
Can you believe it? Fourteen weeks has passed and finals is this coming week. Where the heck did
the time go by so quickly? You may ask what was the most important thing I have learned about this
semester with Dr. B in her CO 225? It's easy of course... VERIFICATION! The importance of always
double and triple checking your facts before writing it is extremely important in the journalism
world. The code of ethics as well as the seven deadly sins are important. Mhmm.. let me think for
some more. OH! Also the different kinds of news you can cover and the specific procedure you must
follow in order to make your story one of a kind and the absolute best!
This semester has been very challenging for me personally, because I am not the best at writing at a
specific style for news reporting. I have never written an article before until this semester, and I have
never thought about the flow of my story till now.
Don't forget the NEWS!
If it's one thing I regret this semester, is not taking the News quizzes seriously. This has taught me
to be more up to date with current news, because knowing current news will only make you wiser
and understand the different issues that are going on today. Because of this class, I have been
keeping up with the news and watching the news as well. Make sure to watch a reliable and credible
news channel that will not be bias towards a specific side. Unless of course you want a specific view
of things.
Writing the articles!
Wow, the experiences of going to a council meeting, interviewing a journalist, covering a live event,
and even interviewing the editors from the Carroll News has been fun and awesome! I never knew it
took so much energy to get a good story out of an event, but it was well worth it. I have learned a
great deal on how to communicate with people and specific questions you should ask.
That is all for now, and may be the last ta-ta!

A City Meeting*
Posted by Marlie Ahola at Sunday, December 7, 2014 3:03:33 PM EST
Last Edited:Sunday, December 7, 2014 5:24:20 PM EST
Recently I have attended a city meeting for Aurora Ohio. I have never attended a meeting like this before,
so I was curious on how it will go. Before attending the meeting, I made sure to do some research on the
City Council board members, and printed out the minute by minute agenda that they created for the
meeting. This agenda was an outline of all the subjects that they are touching base during the meeting.
Live Action!
The way the meeting was run, was in a quick pace. With each issue they are address, each councilmen were
able to bring up questions about that issue before voting on it. There were not any councilmen that voted no
on things that they wanted to get approved. The way the room was set was interesting. All the councilmen
and women sat in front of the room, facing towards the audience, and the mayor of the Aurora sat in front
of them. The mayor of Aurora is Mrs. Benjamin. So her back was facing away from us but towards the City
Council. The one thing that I noticed was that every time a person was able to speak, they thank the
president of the Council, before speaking, cause it was the president who will call on the council person
before he or she would speak their mind.

What did I think?
The meeting itself was slow and boring, but as a citizen who is part of Aurora, I knew I had to listen in
carefully to fully understand what was going on. The most interesting part of the meeting was when the
public was able to stand up and ask the Council or the mayor what he or she was curious or worried about. I
noticed that they would always start off with something positive, such as thanking them for a lovely event
which was sponsored by them, but then they would complain about the littlest thing and hope that it will be
fixed asap. Some subjects that were brought up in the meeting were:
Leaves being delayed on picking up
How long the new sidewalk will take and where does the money come from
The issue with traffic jam during Black Friday, and how will that be resolved for future reference.
The Geauga Lake is being polluted by sewerage water and the people are complaining how that will be
an issue with the drinking water and fishing.
The citizens who were courageous enough to speak their mind weren't too harsh with their wrods, but yet
htey wre frim. They only had 5 mins in the beginning of the meeting to speak and then at the very end they
were only allowed 2 mins.
The Meting was about an hour and a half long, but a nice lady next to me told me that meetings sometimes
go on for several hours before reaching a full decision on all the issues that they have to fix.
What a wonderful experience.
What it reminds me of?
This meeting reminds me of the show "Parks and Recreation". Anyone who is familiar with this show would
understand. The main character's dream is to become the councilwoman of her hometown, Pawnee.
Throughout the season, she eventually does become the next councilwoman for the city, and whenever she
was at a meeting, it was very similar to the one I witnessed.
Also I actually know the mayor of Aurora. She came into my work and ate! The former Mayor loves me and is
a member at Walden, so he introduced me to her personally :)
That's all for now! Ta-ta!

The Good Side Vs the Bad Side!
What I have learned this week in Journalism would be the importance of taking notice of the ethical ways a
journalist should do as they cover a story, and the non ethical ways a journalist should avoid. I have always
thought that all journalists were good and never lied when telling a story, but I was wrong after watching
the movie "Fragile Trust". It shocked me that a journalist would go so long lying through his teeth and not get

caught. It makes me worried about the stories I read now. Are the stories that are being published the actual
truth? That's why you should verify everything!
It's crazy to think that there are so many rules when it comes to writing a story, but the more I think about
it, without these rules, there will always be none stop lies. And the public will not know what to do
anymore, or wouldn't Know who to trust! I'm glad that there are ethical rules to follow and that a majority
of the journalists do follow them, but remember always verify, if you are questioning a certain statement or
fact :) !
