Fred and Nancy Cline
PROPRIETORS - Cline Cellars
FredCline learnedhislove for farming and winemaking from his maternal grandfather, Valeriano
Jacuzzi (of pump and spa fame). On Jacuzzi’s Oakley, California farm, Fred helped him produce
Zinfandel,Mourvèdre, and Carignane for personal consumption. After graduating from U.C. Davis
with a degree in Agricultural Science and Management, Fred and his wife Nancy founded Cline
CellarsnearOakley,California.Theypreservedandrestoredmanyof the ancientvine sitesoriginally
planted by Italian and Portuguese immigrants. In 1991, the Clines relocated the winery to a 350-
13
acre estate inSonoma’sCarnerosregion. There the ClinespioneeredplantingRhone-style varieties
such as Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.
As the Cline familygrew (theynowhave sevenchildren),sodidCline Cellars. The couple purchased
landin the SonomaCoastappellation, plantingPinotNoir, Chardonnay and other classic California
varietals.
Charles (Charlie) Tsegeletos
Winemaker/Director of Winemaking
Charlie Tsegeletos was born to make wine. The son of an Italian mom and a Greek dad, wine was
alwaysonthe table inhishome.Charlie’sgreatgrandfather, Guippe Guidotti, was a winemaker in
the Guerneville area of Sonoma County in the 1930s.
After graduating from U.C. Davis, Charlie began his winemaking adventure in 1980 as an
apprentice at Pendleton Winery. One year later he became Assistant Winemaker at Sonoma’s
Hacienda Wine Cellars, and in 1984 assumed the role of Winemaker at D’Agostini Winery. He
perfectedhisuncannyblendingskillsasSeniorDirectorof WinemakingatGlenEllenWinery,before
joiningCline Cellars in 2002, where he oversees winemaking and production for Cline Cellars and
Jacuzzi Family Vineyards.
Charlie lets the grapes guide his style of winemaking. Working closely with the vineyard
managers , he makes sure varietals are planted in the best locations, then brings many years of
experience and an unerring instinct to the art of crushing, blending and aging the wines. His red
wines are big and dark with lots of fruit concentration and delicate oak nuances; white wines are
bright and fresh without oak or malolactic fermentation.Charlie is a professional wine judge, an
14
avidsnowskierandmotorcyclist. He residesonanoldchickenranch inthe hillsof Sonoma with his
wife and daughter and an assortment of animals.
Vineyards
FredCline wasgrowingand making Rhone-style and Zinfandel wines in Contra Costa and Sonoma
Countiesyearsbefore it was considered a rational business model. The reason is simple: he likes
those wines. And now, so do many American wine drinkers. But Fred is not one to sit still; he has
turnedhisattentiontoclassicCalifornia varietals like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot as well.
Like the otherwinesinthe Cline Cellarsfamily, they combine a reverence for tradition with a bold
wink toward innovation.
Oakley
Home to Cline’sAncientVines -some of California’s oldest, ranging from 80 to 120 years old, these
vineyards get daytime heat and cool nights, thanks to the convergence of the San Joaquin and
Sacramentoriversnearby. One hundredandforty acres of varietals such as Mourvèdre, Carignane
and Zinfandel are harvested.Cline'sMourvèdre andCarignane are plantedinsmall blocksof gnarly,
head-pruned vines in sand-soil. These growing conditions heighten the fruits intensity.
15
Carneros
Our southernSonomaCountylocation, home of ClineCellarssince 1991, is in the Carneros district,
one of California’s most coveted tracts of vineyard real estate. Carneros extends across the cool
southernextremesof bothSonomaand Napa counties and abuts the northernmost section of the
San FranciscoBay region, sleepingnightly under a blanket of chilly fog. Afternoon winds roar into
Carneros’ gentle hills, moderating the blistering summer heat. The climatic conditions force the
vinestostruggle for survival, reducing their yield, which translates to more concentrated flavors.
Carneros winery.
The climate is cooler, similar to the Alsace region of France. These vineyards are typically
enshrouded in early morning coastal fog, bathed in intense midday heat and cooled by late
afternoon Pacific breezes. With more than twice the annual rainfall of inland appellations, the
grapesdemandlongerhang-time toripen.Andalthoughthe yields are smaller, like Alsatian wine,
the quality is better.
16
Farming Practices
In 2000, Fred Cline—in conjunction with Bob Cannard—began using a natural method of farming
theycall GreenString. Going beyond the organic and sustainable labels, the Green String method
doesn'tuse toxicchemicalsforpestandweedcontrol. Instead, the soil is enhanced and sustained
using compost teas, crushed minerals, and ground-up oyster shells.
Friendly insects are introduced to control harmful ones. Weeds not used as ground cover or for
compostare removedbyhungrysheep,orpickedbyhand.Cropcultivationis routinely reduced so
the soil retains the optimum amount of nutrients and vitality.
We manage our water use carefully, to make sure the vines get what they need, but grow deep
roots to guarantee intense and flavorful fruit.
The result of the Green String method is soil that is strong, healthy, and vibrant. That in turn
producesthe most flavorful, robust fruit. You can definitely taste the difference in each bottle of
Cline Cellars wine.
Cover Crops
Each year we grow a cover crop of grains such as barley and oats, and nitrogen fixing plants like
bell-beans. They are grazed down each year after bud burst to provide carbon-containing organic
matter and nitrogen to soften the soil bed. Cover crops also preserve topsoil during winter rains,
and provides a place for beneficial insects to live.
Water Management
17
Our teamof VineyardManagershasmasteredthe art of spotting when water stress is occurring in
the vineyards.Soil moisture contentischecked daily by digging in the soil and dictating when and
how much water is applied to our vineyards to ensure that our vines do not have to compete for
water with our cover crop.
Solar Energy
Cline Cellars solar electric system was installed in 2005. It provides 100% of the winery’s annual
electricity needs for its Carneros production facility.
Just under two thousand solar panels are on the winery’s roof, generating about 411 kilowatts,
providing 100% of the winery’s annual energy consumption.
Cline Cellars goal is to be energy independent – creating predictable energy and costs. Towards
that goal, Cline Cellars installed energy saving lights throughout the facility and added a new
urethane, foam-insulating roof that reduced cooling costs in the summer by up to 30 percent.
The wineryeliminatedhugeenergybills,flat-linedouroperatingbudget for energy costs, and kept
690,000 lbs. of noxious greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere per year.
Wine productionandstorage facilitiesuse verylittle energyinthe midto late winter when electric
ratesare low. In the mid to late summer, when electricity costs rise and winery operations are in
full swing, solarelectricsystemscanoffsetoreliminate those costs completely, as well as provide
enough credits to eliminate the remainder of the annual bills too.

Drink To Your Health
The wine beverage industry in the United States is a multifaceted industry,
that is continually growing and changing. This industry pays a major role in our
economy; it is responsible for close to $400 billion in total economic activity. This
massive industry also supplies over 3.9 million jobs, generating $90 billion each
year in wages. It is easy to see how significant an impact and role wine plays in our
society. Some say that wine has shaped American history and our way of life.
Contrary to belief, consuming wine is also known for the number of health
benefits it possesses, both mentally and physically. Not the type of consumption
that leaves you with negative effects that hinders one’s health. Instead, moderate
wine consumption has some substantial health benefits. Moderate consumption is
defined as two or three glasses of wine a day for men and one to two glasses for
women a day.
-more-
Studies have shown that moderate consumption of wine can lower your risk
of cardiovascular disease. The School of Public Health at Harvard University found
34
that "moderate amounts of wine raises levels of high-density lipoprotein, HDL, or
'good' cholesterol and higher HDL levels are associated with greater protection
against heart disease.” This means that the wine can protect and lower your risk of
heart attacks and or strokes. Therefore, drinking in moderate levels can add years
to your life.
Drinking in moderation can also decrease chances of developing dementia
and lowers the chance of diabetes. "Small amounts of wine might, in effect, make
brain cells more fit. wine in moderate amounts stresses cells and thus toughens
them up to cope with major stresses down the road that could cause dementia,"
said Edward J. Neafsey, Ph.D., after conducting a study that included 365,000
participants.
When going out with friends or meeting new people, wine makes it easier to
socialize and interact with less anxiety attached than normal. People are known to
become more confident when drinking wine. Drinking in the correct amount gives
people a new sense of social freedom.
-more-
That is why here at Cline Cellars we believe that one should practice a
healthy and fulfilling lifestyle around moderate consumption of wine. We encourage
everyone to come by and enjoy some our highest quality wine that we have to offer.

SPEECH FOR GRAND OPENING OF CLINE CELLARS BOUTIQUE WINE BAR
Hello everyone and thank you for being here.
My name is Trevor Hubby, and I am here today to present to you all, our upcoming
grand opening for Cline Cellars where we are opening a new wine bar and tasting room in
downtown Sacramento.
As many of you know, who has been with us from the very beginning, we have
been working extremely hard to bring you the highest quality of wine combined with
36
amazing and outstanding location. Our passion for wine and serving our customer exactly
what they want is what separates us from any other ordinary winery.
I want to first talk to you about the new location we have acquired and what that
means to us, then a little about the wine we will be offering, and finally our promise and
commitment we have to all of you.
We have been fortunate enough to secure a beautiful location that is located in the
heart of downtown Sacramento. Upon walking into our new location you will notice a
dimly light room with an ambient atmosphere. There will be tables around the bar area
with a nicely done wood finish and outside there will be space as well to sit and drink. Our
plan was to have a place that is a cross between classic and modern at the same time. We
want to make this location as comfortable as possible and make you feel right at home.
-more-
Some of the wines we will be offering will vary on the time of year and season. We
will be providing the highest quality of wines and that is anything from our Single Vineyard
Wines all the way to our Ancient Vine Wines. Our wines have won a variety of different
awards throughout the years, including the most recent Gold Medal Winner at the 2015
Sonoma County Fair.
Our promise and commitment is to serve you all with every ounce of hospitality and
care we can offer. Cline Cellars is committed to finding high quality wines and products
which enhance its enjoyment, to maintaining the highest level of expertise and
37
professionalism. We want to make you a part of our family and we want to be a part of
yours too.
I want to say that we are very excited to present you to our new location, our
amazing wines all while living up to every promise and commitment we have to serving
you.
Thank you again, for being here today. Please feel free to ask any questions that
you may have.

Gregory Allen, Assistant Executive Officer
Cline Family Cellars
1123 LSt. Sacramento, CA 95814
Dear Cline Cellars family,
As we begin to embark on this new journey, I would love to express my sincerest
gratitude and appreciation of everything you all have contributed to making this dream
38
come true. Without any doubt, we would not be in the position we are today if it was not
for the hard work and time put in by each and every one of you wonderful individuals.
Who knew this all would have started in the 1960s when Fred Cline would spend
time on his grandfather’s farm, learning the ways of crafting fine grapes from a such a
young age. His hard work and dedication ends up leading to this very moment. His work
ethic set the tone for the company, and that tone that has been upheld by every
employee.
We offer some of the best wine that California has to offer. The legendary Cline
Cellars Zinfandel is a direct product of the hard work everyone puts in. Now we serve some
of the best Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah that the area has to offer.
-more-
The Cline’s have a history of finding success. They own and run successful vineyards
throughout Sonoma county. I have no reason to believe why our new spot cannot find the
same success as the other locations.
I am confident that our consumers here in downtown Sacramento will enjoy what
we have to offer. I am also confident we can obtain a solid customer base that will keep
our businesses thriving for years to come. I have faith in each and every one of you that
you will sustain and maintain all the hard work you have been giving us since the very first
39
day. Together, we can make Cline Cellars one of Sacramento’s premier downtown
destinations.
Once again, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your time, patience,
dedication and hard work that allows us to be in the position we are today. look forward to
working with you all for years to come, and may we toast to a long and successful business.
Cheers!
Sincerely,
Gregory Allen, Assistant Executive Officer

  • 16. 16 Farming Practices In 2000, Fred Cline—in conjunction with Bob Cannard—began using a natural method of farming theycall GreenString. Going beyond the organic and sustainable labels, the Green String method doesn'tuse toxicchemicalsforpestandweedcontrol. Instead, the soil is enhanced and sustained using compost teas, crushed minerals, and ground-up oyster shells. Friendly insects are introduced to control harmful ones. Weeds not used as ground cover or for compostare removedbyhungrysheep, orpickedbyhand.Cropcultivationis routinely reduced so the soil retains the optimum amount of nutrients and vitality. We manage our water use carefully, to make sure the vines get what they need, but grow deep roots to guarantee intense and flavorful fruit. The result of the Green String method is soil that is strong, healthy, and vibrant. That in turn producesthe most flavorful, robust fruit. You can definitely taste the difference in each bottle of Cline Cellars wine. Cover Crops Each year we grow a cover crop of grains such as barley and oats, and nitrogen fixing plants like bell-beans. They are grazed down each year after bud burst to provide carbon-containing organic matter and nitrogen to soften the soil bed. Cover crops also preserve topsoil during winter rains, and provides a place for beneficial insects to live. Water Management

Solar Energy Cline Cellars solar electric system was installed in 2005. It provides 100% of the winery’s annual electricity needs for its Carneros production facility. Just under two thousand solar panels are on the winery’s roof, generating about 411 kilowatts, providing 100% of the winery’s annual energy consumption. Cline Cellars goal is to be energy independent – creating predictable energy and costs. Towards that goal, Cline Cellars installed energy saving lights throughout the facility and added a new urethane, foam-insulating roof that reduced cooling costs in the summer by up to 30 percent. The wineryeliminatedhugeenergybills,flat-linedouroperatingbudget for energy costs, and kept 690,000 lbs. of noxious greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere per year. Wine productionandstorage facilitiesuse verylittle energyinthe midto late winter when electric ratesare low. In the mid to late summer, when electricity costs rise and winery operations are in full swing, solarelectricsystemscanoffsetoreliminate those costs completely, as well as provide enough credits to eliminate the remainder of the annual bills too. • 33. 33 Op-Ed Drink To Your Health The wine beverage industry in the United States is a multifaceted industry, that is continually growing and changing. This industry pays a major role in our economy; it is responsible for close to $400 billion in total economic activity. This massive industry also supplies over 3.9 million jobs, generating $90 billion each year in wages. It is easy to see how significant an impact and role wine plays in our society. Some say that wine has shaped American history and our way of life. Contrary to belief, consuming wine is also known for the number of health benefits it possesses, both mentally and physically. Not the type of consumption that leaves you with negative effects that hinders one’s health. Instead, moderate wine consumption has some substantial health benefits. Moderate consumption is defined as two or three glasses of wine a day for men and one to two glasses for women a day. -more- Studies have shown that moderate consumption of wine can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. The School of Public Health at Harvard University found
  • 34. 34 that "moderate amounts of wine raises levels of high-density lipoprotein, HDL, or 'good' cholesterol and higher HDL levels are associated with greater protection against heart disease.” This means that the wine can protect and lower your risk of heart attacks and or strokes. Therefore, drinking in moderate levels can add years to your life. Drinking in moderation can also decrease chances of developing dementia and lowers the chance of diabetes. "Small amounts of wine might, in effect, make brain cells more fit. wine in moderate amounts stresses cells and thus toughens them up to cope with major stresses down the road that could cause dementia," said Edward J. Neafsey, Ph.D., after conducting a study that included 365,000 participants. When going out with friends or meeting new people, wine makes it easier to socialize and interact with less anxiety attached than normal. People are known to become more confident when drinking wine. Drinking in the correct amount gives people a new sense of social freedom. -more- That is why here at Cline Cellars we believe that one should practice a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle around moderate consumption of wine. We encourage everyone to come by and enjoy some our highest quality wine that we have to offer. ###
