5. Town Plan
• Raffles was not pleased with the
settlement in Singapore when he came
back in 1822.
• The Singapore River River mouth was
where most of the immigrant live as there
were more job opportunity there as there
is a busy port and robust trade activity
6. • The area was overcrowded with
settlements and the shipping activities
became inefficient. Raffles know that
Singapore can be an orderly city by
overhauling the settlement
• Doctor John Crawfurd carried out the town
plan in 1823.
8. • Commercial area was the main trading place
in Singapore. The foreign traders trade and
live at commercial square(Known as Raffles
Place today)
• Chinatown was the main place of the
Chinese settlement which was sub-divided
into smaller places to help different dialect
groups to reduce misunderstanding. Every
dialect have it’s Kapitan
9. • Chulia Kampong was the home for the
Indians along Church streets. The Indian
settlement was then moved to Serangoon
Road
• European town was the home of the
European and wealthy Asian. The houses
were huge with trees lining the road
• Kampong Glam was the home for the Sultan
and their relatives; the Muslim and Malay
