I. Teaching Statement
Marie-Joelle Estrada
I am grateful to have found my purpose in life – exploring and sharing exciting
psychological findings about human behavior with my classes, colleagues and the individual
students that I mentor. I believe that being a professor is the best career I could hope for; I am
able to learn about topics that are intrinsically interesting to me and am paid to discuss them with
a motivated audience. There is nothing more gratifying than being able to inspire excitement in
others with regards to a topic that you find personally fascinating and worthwhile.
Teaching Philosophy
My approach to teaching has four main goals: a) maintain active student involvement in
the learning process, b) focus on fostering students’ critical thinking abilities, c) provide a
balance between theory and application by situating psychological theory and research in the
context of real-world questions and problems, and d) provide a structure and atmosphere in my
classes that facilitates learning. I will begin by discussing my teaching experiences, followed by
specific examples of the ways in which I try to create an environment conducive to
accomplishing these four goals.
Teaching Experience
Classroom Teaching. Of the many responsibilities that I have had as both a faculty
member and as a graduate student, my involvement in teaching is one of the most enjoyable and
rewarding. I have been teaching at the University level now for over 13 years and continue to
enjoy the material and new classes I get to explore. While serving as faculty at the University of
Rochester, I have had the opportunity to teach several new classes: Introduction to Psychology,
Behavioral Medicine/Health Psychology the Psychology of Gender, Abnormal Psychology,
Clinical Psychology and most recently The Psychology of consumerism. I was also excited to be
approached by the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester to teach a graduate
version of the consumer behavior class to both MS and MBA students.
The classes at the University of Rochester were much larger than the ones I had had
previously – ranging in size from 130 students to 200, and any given semester I was responsible
for teaching more than 400 students. These classes presented some new challenges in terms of
maintaining student interest, conducting in-class activities, and getting to know my students that
required adapting my previous teaching style. When I was approached by a group of four
students seeking to learn more about Dating and Interpersonal Relationship research, I found
time in my schedule to create an independent readings class for them. I have also chosen to
create an advanced Consumer Behavior Independent readings class for a few students who were
interested in knowing more about the topic.
While a graduate student at Duke University, I sought out three teaching opportunities:
Personality and Social Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and a special topics seminar on
Interpersonal Relationships and Dating. In the first two classes, the enrollment was at its limit
Estrada, M.J. 3

(15 students), and I was solely responsible for the operation of the class, from creating the
syllabus through each of the lectures, and finally the exams. For the special topics seminar, I
developed my own course, an advanced seminar on Interpersonal Relationships and Dating. The
conceptualization of the class, the organization of the topics, and the selection of journal articles
were of my own design which was very exciting for me, given that my area of specialization
within social psychology is close relationships. This seminar was largely discussion-based,
accompanied by students’ personal reflections via both thought papers and a final research
proposal, and consisted of using both a textbook and journal articles to supplement the in-class
lecture material.
In addition to my experience teaching at Duke, I also taught undergraduate classes while
I was finishing my Master’s degree at the University of North Carolina. At UNC it was
customary for graduate students to teach a class of approximately 50 students each semester and
to be entirely responsible for that class. I taught three semesters of Introductory Social
Psychology and found that it was one of the highlights of my week. I really enjoyed the dynamic
aspect of sharing my interest in a field that I find fascinating and to have students become
excited by the topics as well. My enthusiasm for teaching was also evident to my students;
during my time at UNC, I received two departmental commendations for having some of the
highest teacher evaluation ratings and was also nominated by my students for the Edward Kidder
Graham teaching award.
Mentorship. I also enjoy fostering learning through one-on-one mentorship with both my
classroom students and my independent project students. I encourage my students to stop by
during office hours with any information that they may have relevant to class or to discuss any
topics that they found especially compelling. It is not unusual for me to run into students later on
campus and have them stop me to talk about how they still think of or use what they learned in
my class. With my honors students, I enjoy fostering their critical thinking by helping them
design a program of research that meshes within my own area of expertise. Although the projects
we are working on are within my area of research, under my guidance each of my students have
contributed independent and innovative suggestions that make our project a truly collaborative
effort. This spring, I finished supervising a Master’s thesis for a student in public Health (Yitong
Gao) entitled “Motivations Underlying Women’s Hookup Experiences and Perceived
Limitations to Condom Use”. I am also co-supervising a McNair scholar for summer 2015 (Chizi
Onyekwere) on her community outreach project on women’s experience of domestic violence.
Finally, I believe that mentorship should extend beyond the classroom to the University
community at large. In keeping with this philosophy, I am proud to be the faculty mentor for the
Sigma Rho fraternity; a multi-cultural fraternity that seeks to increase diversity and cultural
appreciation on campus. They organize such awareness raising events such as a candlelight vigil
for the victims of the Nepal earthquake and a memorial ceremony for victims of the Rwanda
genocide. In keeping with the spirit of community involvement at the University, I am also
active with the Office of Minority Student Affairs and chose to participate in the Early College
Opportunity program. The ECO provides incoming freshmen from disadvantaged backgrounds
with some pre-college experience and classes and often have a hard time finding faculty who are
willing to give up part of their summer to participate.

Accomplishing My Teaching Goals
Foster critical thinking skills. I believe that there are two key components to successfully
learning about psychology. The first involves the learning of theory and concepts and
understanding the methods by which researchers study human behavior. Especially important to
social psychology is understanding why the field is scientific, and how, under the right set of
circumstances, we can draw conclusions about people in general, above and beyond individual
variation. However, a second and equally important component involves the development and
the use of critical thinking skills in the application of psychological theory. Accordingly, my
second goal when teaching social psychology is to foster the broad development and application
of each student’s critical thinking skills. When discussing a theory in class, I often challenge
students to think on their feet about questions not covered in the text or in my notes. For
example, I might ask them about limitations of the current theory and how they would design a
study that addresses those limitations. I might also ask them what the theory would predict in a
tangentially related situation, draw comparisons between similar theories and ask them to
differentiate the two, or invite students to share their personal experiences of times in which they
have seen this theory illustrated in their own lives. To this end, I strive to maintain a casual,
relaxed, and accessible atmosphere in my class that increases the comfort level of the students. I
actively encourage students to stop me during the lecture with questions and to challenge any
incorrect assumptions that they believe may exist about the topic at hand. I encourage my
students to approach me with questions and to stay after class to discuss the material or help
them understand concepts. For students who are struggling with my class, I encourage them to
schedule extra one-on-one review sessions in order to clarify the material. Taken together, I
believe that I am able to create a classroom environment and foster student-teacher relationships
that promote learning and motivation.
Balance theory and application. One of the joys of teaching psychology is its relevance
to everyday life. I attempt to balance theory and application through the content of my lecture
material and through my use of in-class exercises and movie clips. In my lectures, I cover the
theory and research but also illustrate how the material may apply to students’ everyday lives.
For example, during the attitudes section as a summary for all the persuasive techniques, I
engage a discussion of “how best to try to convince your parents to let you go away for spring
break.” During my lecture on eating disorders, we took time to look at the on-line support
network that many disordered eating individuals resort to, and later that week had a Student
Health Dietitian give a guest lecture about eating disorders on campus and the resources
available to students. Other examples include having students participate as a group in an on-line
study rating whether smiles are genuine or artificial or having them play the interactive ‘bomb
shelter’ game to illustrate kinds of conformity. I also strive to include both some academic and
non-academic video clips (e.g., a Pepsi commercial to illustrate dissonance) to illustrate
instances of theories and empirical findings. The non-academic video clips are especially
compelling as students begin to look at everyday occurrences from a psychological perspective.
Organization of the class and provision of support materials. A challenge commonly
encountered by students in lecture courses is that they become overwhelmed with the amount of
information presented during class. Students are often faced with the choice of either trying to
listen and understand the concepts or scrambling to create notes for themselves. To help alleviate
Estrada, M.J. 5

this problem, I teach all of my courses using PowerPoint presentations, which I then edit to
create general outlines. These outlines to my lectures are posted on Blackboard the day before
each class so that students can then bring these notes to class and follow along as I present the
information. The majority of my outlines contain brief summary versions of my actual lecture
notes minus key findings such as the conclusion of the experiments or material not covered in the
textbook. My goal is to provide students with enough of a structure that they are able to listen
and understand the concepts, but they are still required to come to class, pay attention, and take
notes in order to receive a good grade. Thus, students invest their concentration not on rote
transcription of information but on gaining an understanding of the concepts presented in lecture,
which also affords more time for discussion, broad application of the theory, and questions that
students may have.
Summary
In short, my teaching philosophy is organized around four key goals—to maintain active
student involvement, foster students’ critical thinking abilities, provide a balance between theory
and application by using relevant real-life examples, and provide a structure and atmosphere that
facilitate learning. Taken together, I believe the strategies that I use to meet my goals
significantly improve students’ abilities to learn the material and to apply these findings to the
world in which they live. I love the intellectual stimulation provided by my own research, but I
am equally passionate about sharing my interests with a classroom of students. I have very much
enjoyed the classes that I have taught thus far and look forward to continuing my involvement in
teaching for many years to come.

Exams:
Course time primarily will be spent on lecture material and discussion, and there will be 3 Unit Exams, each
worth 80 points throughout the semester. Each exam will cover all material reviewed in class, including any
discussions, video clips, in-class exercises. Exams will be made up of a combination of multiple choice and
short answer exams. The unit exams will not be cumulative; i.e. each exam will cover only the material
presented since the previous exam. A cumulative final (worth 80 points) will be available but is NOT
required. If you choose to take the final exam, this score will replace your lowest unit exam grade. In other
words, if you are not satisfied with your score on one of the unit exams, you may choose to take the final
exam.
Policy Concerning Make-up Exams:
Ψ
   Ψ

Estrada, M.J.

The policy of this course is that no make-up exams will be given. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO MAKE
ANY OF THE LISTED EXAM DATES, YOU ARE CHOOSING TO TAKE THE OPTIONAL
CUMULATIVE FINAL. If you miss more than one exam due to a truly unfortunate incident (and can be
verified by the Dean of Students), you will be allowed to make up your points. The make up exam provided
is discretionary, but will most likely either take the form of an essay exam or a 15-page paper on an assigned
topic.
Attendance:
Attendance will not be taken, however it is strongly encouraged since all material covered in class can
appear on exams. You are responsible for all the material covered in class.
Special Needs
Students with special conditions as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act who need test or other
course materials furnished in an alternate format should notify me as soon as possible.
Extra Credit Policy
The maximum number of credit hours that can be applied to extra credit is 8.0; 8 hours of credit will raise
your final grade approximately 4%. The maximum amount of credit is guaranteed to move a student from
within one grade range into the next highest grade (e.g., from a B to a B+ or from a B+ to an A-). You must
allocate credits earned in SONA to specific courses, and credits earned this semester must be ‘spent’ this
semester. Please note that SONA doesn’t open until after the second week of class has started and it will
close the last day of the reading period at 5pm. No faculty instructors are affiliated with SONA so if you are
experiencing any problems, please contact the administrator (exphelp@psych.rochester). More information
on research participation and SONA is provided at the end of the syllabus, after the course calendar.
Upper Level Writing (Optional)
A small number of students will be allowed to take a tag-along section of this course to get upper-level
writing credit toward the psychology major. To participate in this class, you must be a psychology major who
has not yet fulfilled the two-course upper level writing requirement for the psychology major. Depending on
demand for places in this tag-along section of the course, seniors will be given first choice, juniors will be
given second choice, and so on. Students will apply for a spot in the class during the second week of the
semester and eligible students will be emailed a permission code.
NOTE: When you get permission to be in the tag-along writing course, it is your responsibility to register
for a SECOND writing class (W) the day you receive the code:
1) You register for CSP/PSY 267 for 4.0 credits. The requirements for that course are exactly the same
for you as they are for everyone else in the course, and your grade is based on the three exams, plus
participation in research projects.
2) In addition, you must register for a second course, CSP/PSY 267W for 0.5 credits. You will get
credit toward your upper-level writing requirement only if you have registered for both courses.
PLEASE NOTE: Your grade for the 0.5 credit tag-along course will be completely separate from your grade
for the course itself, and it will have nothing to do with your test grades or your research participation. The
grade for the tag-along course will be determined wholly on the basis of your grades on the papers, and will
in no way influence your grade for the actual course (CSP/PSY 267).
To get credit for this tag-along course you will need to write three (3) papers, and then rewrite one (1) of
them. Each paper should be about 5 pages long (12 pt font, double spaced, 1” margins) plus a page of
references, and must be typed. Papers must be written in APA format – including references where
applicable.
The papers will each get a grade based on both content and style (including grammar). NOTE: YOU MUST
REWRITE PAPER 1 or 2 by the end of the semester. Although the re-written paper will not get a grade
Estrada, M.J.

itself, YOU WILL NOT GET A GRADE FOR THE TAG ALONG CLASS UNLESS YOU HAND IT IN. In
summary, the grade for the tag along class will be the average grade of your three papers. More details on
each writing assignment will be available on blackboard a week before they are due.
Grading Criteria
A = 93 +
Exam 1 ~33 % (80 points) A- = 90-92

1. Rapport with students - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Comments:
Professor Estrada always made herself available for student questions and concerns and always seemed
genuinely interested in making sure everyone understood the material.
I was so impressed that Professor Estrada knew everyone's names and called on students individually. I really
felt that I mattered in that classroom.
She encourages questions, and readily initiates discussions in class that are relevant to the course material.
She made a big effort to get to know and recognize every student in her large lecture hall class, which is
impressive. She is approachable in and out of class and is very friendly.
Prof. Estrada was available for questions and she was approachable.
Professor Estrada encouraged a lot of participation in class and it was evident that she held a good rapport with
us. I like how much she valued our input, inside the class and when she would share links or articles that we
would send her outside of class. I also like that she asked for about me power points to take the time to actually
get to know us and learn our names!
Very open to questions and clarifications when necessary.
This class had 125 people but it felt like a seminar-sized class. I've never been in a class this big that had so
much participation. Professor Estrada was genuinely interested, not just in answering our questions, but in what
we thought about the material. We all learned from each other.
Professor Estrada is excellent during office hours. She creates a safe space in class and when I go for extra
help. She always answers my questions throughly and makes students feel comfortable both in class and office
hours. This was the first class I raised my hand to speak in.
Excellent rapport with students. She even remembers the names of the entire class.
The professor had weekly office hours to offer help.
Dr. Estrada really showed that she cared about her students personally and wanted us to be successful. She
always wanted to hear our opinions and asked us each to make a powerpoint about ourselves to learn our
names, which no other professor I have had has done.
2. Comments on instructor - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Professor Estrada is an animated lecturer, she talks to her students rather than at them, and her demonstrated
passion for the material she covers makes her class incredibly enjoyable and easy to learn in.
seems quite personable.
Openness to student opinions, really wants to make sure you understand the material, so will go back over a
slide during lecture if you ask. Always was available for extra help during office hours. Handled sensitive topics
relating to gender very well, and gave information that was ultimately empowering for students.
Professor Estrada was such an interesting lecturer and I always enjoyed this class. The topics covered are very
interesting and Professor Estrada did a wonderful job relating everything to the student's lives.
She LOVES the material, her passion is very evident as well as her knowledge about gender issues. She
speaks clearly and keeps you engaged with funny stories or hypotheticals that make you think more in depth
about the material as well as what positions you might have held.
She is a very clear lecturer. She loves the material she teaches which makes her enjoyable to be taught by.
Prof. Estrada loved teaching this class. You can tell by the way the material was presented.
Professor Estrada is very passionate about this subject and it clearly shows in her teaching. She is very good at
presenting the material, but also in making it interesting and relevant to our lives. I thought it was very
impressive how thorough she was in covering so many topics, but I never felt like I was overwhelmed.
Dedicated to her work and her students - you get the feeling she really cares, which is not something you find in
all professors, particularly of professors who teach classes with over 100 students. I was amazed at her ability to
know every students name - seriously, the best professor I have had at the U of R
She has a genuine interest in the topics that was apparent and was always willing to answer questions to
explain the material better.
Professor Estrada is brilliant, engaging, and an excellent role model. She doesn't "teach to the "test," but really
wants us to evolve our thought process. Students admire her but she is still very approachable and makes time
for all her students despite the large class size.
Prof. Estrada is such an inspiration. She breaks stereotypes and makes me feel like anything is possible. I firmly

believe that every student (of every gender and sexual orientation) should take a course with her.
Passion and joy that Professor ESTRADA has in teaching really helps students to be happy and learning
actively in class.
She answers questions when students ask. She also goes back slides when students have not finished. She is
also available to help answer questions during exams.
Passion, knowledge, and genuine concern for her students.
Professor Estrada is extremely inspiring. This class was thought-provoking and I looked forward going to this
class. Prof. Estrada showed enthusiasm and passion when teaching the class which was extremely helpful and
great to see. She made sure that we understood the material and always asked the class if there was any
confusion in anything presented.
She is personable, loves teaching the material and fosters great class discussions.
-Passionate and intelligent -Very well-reserched -Takes the opinions of her students into consideration
very enthusiastic about course and gets students excited to learn material
Brilliant and excited about the class.
It was really cool to know that the instructor actually cared and took the time to learn about each student in the
class. She was also very passionate about the material which translated to the students
She keeps everything very interesting, and cares about the opinions of every student no matter what it is.
Professor Estrada is a well respected and highly valued professor among the students of the U of R. This is my
second class I've taken with her, and she knows not only my name, but has taken the time to get to know me.
She's personal, stylish, and an amazing role model.
-Excellent rapport with the students - Invigorates the class topic - Good degree of involving class with topic via
interactive questions - Has exams be in the same room and time for better recollection chance
Estrada truly cares about this material and this course. She works hard to make the class very fun and relatable
for college students. She also is very willing to listen to what students want to learn and tailor her lectures
accordingly. She is like a celebrity on campus and the whole student body knows about her and this class! She
is a great teacher!
generally organized, passionate and understanding
Clear and well-informed. Passionate about the subject.
She keeps class interesting
As always, Dr Estrada was knowledgeable and excited both in and out of class about the topic. Her personal
love for the topic is extremely evident and makes the course that much more valuable and enjoyable.
she is very educated about this area of psychology and her passion shows through in her teaching
She's one of the greatest lecturers at this university. She could probably make a course about snails and it
would be interesting.
Incredibly engaging and unafraid to discuss controversial topics.
Professor Estrada is one of the best professors I have had at the U of R. She is a very engaging lecturer and is
extremely receptive to student opinions. She also spends a lot of time getting to know her students and knew
everyone's names by the second or third lecture. She really cares about student's learning the material and is
always willing to meet with students outside of class.
very enthusiastic in teaching. Professor is genuinely interested in this subject and wants to engage in in-depth
conversations with students. she is extremely open to helping students succeed in course, through being
available of extra help by email or additional office hours. she loves what she is teaching
You are WONDERFUL. All of the explanations in class were concise with numbers and examples to back it up.
Professor Estrada is very aware of her students thoughts and feelings. She adjusts the class to our needs.
Her knowledge on the topics, and ability to make it related to the real world
Always enthusiastic about teaching this class, shows clips related to the topic we're learning. Makes class fun
and puts a lot of effort into making every class a good class.
Giving real life examples, making the material relatable. Encouraging student comments and having discussions
in class (especially hard with such a big class!). Very approachable. I really enjoyed the relevant current articles
posted in the announcements throughout the course. Topics were well organized. Exceptional professor
overall.
3. Comments on course
This course has an incredible professor, incredibly interesting and relevant subject matter that every student
should learn, and a fantastic classroom dynamic.
Challenges the way you think about gender in everyday life, making you think critically about issues.
The material itself, the video clips and visuals, order that the material was presented in really flowed.
Interesting, relatable, somewhat student influenced (which lectures we prefer over the other etc.)
The material in general is the course's strength because it is relevant to the real world.
The materials in this class were vividly applicable to real life experiences. It allows students to discuss and learn
things about life. Having an open mind in this class will definitely cause a life change. Loved it!
This course is probably my favorite I have taken so far. It is extremely relevant in the real world and helped me
gain a new perspective on so many things. The material was so interesting that I often found myself talking
about it with my other friends in a non-academic setting because I just wanted to share!
It really makes you think about topics that we SHOULD be thinking about but don't. It has really changed my
perceptions of the media and how to think about the images that are constantly being pushed in my direction
It covers a wide range of interesting topics that are very relevant and important for people to know and be aware

of. Very informative.
Extremely valuable class that challenges our thought processes and teaches us to evaluate ourselves and our
experiences critically.
The course format and course material are excellent. The combination of traditional lecture with discussion
make for an ideal learning environment. The course material is extremely interesting and relevant for all
humans! It prepares students for adulthood, jobs, relationships, parenthood, and general life. Although it was an
elective, this was the most valuable course I have taken in my three years at the UR so far.
The applicability in real life. I changed my perspective towards woman, to be more equal.
The class has in-class discussions and is a very engaging class.
It provides a great background of gender issues through the lens of psychology and also is very interesting to
apply to society and one's own life.
Great material covered.
Interesting, relevant etc. I think there needs to be a psychology of race course. We shouldn't just be having
these sorts of discussions about gender and sexuality!
Incredibly interesting and applicable to the real world
covered several interesting and controversial topics
There was a lot if information that many people don't think about when it comes to gender and I found the
course extremely informative and relatable to every day life
Professor Estrada's enthusiastic love for this topic makes this course one of the best offered under PSY/CSP.
- Stays Objective about Gender Controversial Issues - Very Informative for Serious Gender-related issues -
Entirely lecture-based -- promotes involvement and no book-related pressure
everyone should take this class.. a lot of this stuff is misunderstood by the public
Very clear and focused curriculum. Fascinating and presently relevant material.
I loved this class
it is a very interesting class, and very relatable and i loved learning about this topic
Everything
I would recommend that every student take this course. I initially took this class for my major in Public Health,
however, I learned a lot that was very applicable to life. I think everyone would benefit from learning about
psychology of gender and how gender inequality is a lot more prevalent in society then people realize.
This is my favorite class that I've taken at college. It got me to think about things I've never considered and
reevaluate my opinions about a lot of things. I loved it.
It is a gem and unlike anything else offered at UR.
The topics and how they're studied
Relevance to real life. Well organized and understandable, for each topic there was supporting studies and real
applications. Unique course-- you can't get this material by reading a textbook. This class was very enjoyable
and enlightening. One of my all-time favorite classes!
She is lovely and intelligent!
4. Teaching skills - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Comments:
Incredible examples that always clarified the concepts. I love all of the visuals and video clips.
She slows down if students tell her she is going to fast, she takes the time to break down any difficult material
using diagrams or the blackboard until she is sure everyone understands.
She obviously loves this material and it definitely shows through in how she teaches it. She makes people want
to come to class and want to listen.
Prof. Estrada vibes off the class. She notices when the class is vacant or if the class is drained. She adjusts and
puts in effort to make sure when those days come, that the class is still exciting and interesting.
Professor Estrada is a very good lecturer who is very concise and clear in the way she words both her power
points and lectures. Whenever students had difficulty, she always had another example to clarify, and would
always follow up with us to make sure we understood the material.
Very enthusiastic! Awesome to have a class with a professor who is so dedicated not only to the topic she is
teaching but also to the students she teaches to.
Sometimes the amount of studies was overwhelming and a bit confusing to follow.
ALWAYS had examples from videos, tv, documentaries, magazines, to help support her points with. Really
helped us to connect the concepts with real life.
Professor Estrada is one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from throughout my entire
academic career. I always look forward to her class, as it never seems like a chore to attend.
Professor ESTRADA is a very engaging teacher who is communicative and interesting with lots of examples to
teaching, which brings life to what we learn.
The professor tried to explain herself when students did not understand and she went back slides if students
were not finished with a slide.
5. Quality of exams/assignments - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Comments:
She makes sure to show up for the first half of exams and to clarify anything that people might not know or
understand. She also provided a lot of supplemental (optional) material for people to read.
Her exams can be difficult but they were fair. All the material on the exams came from class. They were the

perfect length for the class time given to complete them.
Exams were effective in making sure you knew the concepts. Details were tested too. However, they were
interesting topics so it was not mind boggling exams.
There were no surprises on the test, which made them very fair.
The method of evaluation is very straightforward and fair.
Excellent exam that helps students to study harder in advance and learn after taking the exam.
Her exams are worded very confusingly, so the students have to read it very carefully to not make mistakes.
Exams were extremely fair. If some topics that were on the power points were not covered in class, then they
were not on the exam. Prof. Estrada made it clear what was or what was not on the exams. Exams also covered
important aspects of the course and tested the material that we learned well.
The exams were the best psychology exams I've ever taken. They were clear, concise, yet not ridiculously
easy.
Sometimes the wording of the test questions could be a little confusing
6. Organization - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Comments:
It was sometimes frustrating how slides in the posted powerpoints were missing or out of order
Well organized, if anything is not working on the powerpoint she readily finds the actual file on her computer.
She also provides the full slides if hers are not the same as ours for any reason.
All of her lectures had a clear focus and she came prepared to lecture them appropriately.
I appreciate how she always reviews the power points right before class so that she knows exactly what she will
be covering!
Annoying technical difficulties - not any fault of the professor though - more to do with the classroom
Sometimes the class drifted off topic, but not too often.
I wish we had a little more time to cover the material so we didn't have to choose between lectures! It's all so
interesting.
Prof. Estrada is by far the most organized professor I have ever had a course with. It is very refreshing to know
that the class will always start and end on time and that the entire course will be full of relevant, interesting, and
diverse material.
Fairly well-organized. Professor ESTRADA seems to be always prepared with her own note to teach us.
The professor was not able to completely finish her lectures for the class. She does like to have discussions with
her classmates, though.
Prof. Estrada is extremely knowledgeable in the material covered by this class and was always well prepared.
Time was never wasted and the discussions in the class were extremely thought-provoking and interesting.
Lecture was my favorite to attend out of all of my courses.
could have a limit for student feedback in class and try and call on more than just a few students
This was my favorite class I think I've ever taken. It was extremely relevant to my everyday life and extremely
interesting.
Estrada, M.J.

1. Teaching skills - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Comments:
She is very good at presenting the material.
Very aware of student's needs/questions.
Exams were pretty tricky and it's somewhat difficult to see what the important take away points were. That being
said when students asked questions she always tried to help as best she could to make sure they were in a
position to help themselves as best they could prior to the test.
Love her teaching style! I think it was harder because this was the first year the course was offered, so she
didn't know exactly how/what to teach - but she did a great job with something new to her! Professor Estrada
used real world examples that made the class completely worth taking not only because it was interesting but
because everything could be related back to my everyday life. It was clear she pout a ton of work into preparing
material for this class, including finding research and looking at multiple textbooks to compile interesting material
for class.
If there was infinite time, it would have been awesome to have more examples. But alas, there is not infinite
time. Everything was very clearly explained.
Amazing instructor.
She used a variety of teaching tools and guest lecturers, which helped keep the course relevant and exciting
For a class being taught for the first time it was reasonable but the important points that showed up on the exam
were way to specific for what was discussed in class.
Amazing professor, always willing to help students understand the material.
Professor Estrada does put her effort to go more in depth to explain when students have questions or don't
understand very much.
Dr. Estrada is excellent. She really makes material exciting and easy to learn
Professor Estrada often had good examples in class, but would not include them in the lecture slides. I found
the examples to be very helpful and would try my best to copy down what professor Estrada was saying, but as
a visual learner, I would have really liked it if the examples shown in the lecture during class were included in
the downloadable version available to students. Professor Estrada was very receptive to what the class was
interested in and adjusted the topics of her lectures to meet the interests of students.
2. Rapport with students - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Comments:
Great respect for students.
One of the most approachable and dedicated professors. You can tell from her class persona and emails that
she puts a lot of though into this class and cares about her students.
Professor Estrada was very willing to take comments and questions from students and often went out of her way
to answer questions that students had about material (going so far as to researching the questions for them).
She did insist on us meeting with the TAs if we had questions, I wish that I had been able to meet with her more
because she seems so intelligent.
All questions were met with enthusiasm and extra research (re: Dora) and discussion was highly encouraged,
which was great. Dr. Estrada's strong effort to get to know all of us is something unique in larger classes and
made it seem like we weren't in a large lecture hall. Her tailoring the topics to our interests was also awesome
and demonstrated her high respect for us as individuals.
You can easily see that she cares for all students.
Very responsive and provided research data when applicable
She is not the most friendly/ approachable/ respectful professor in U of R. At a personal level, she is very
assertive and could come off as mean at times. However, in class, she is very willing to answer questions and is
pretty clear.
Professor Estrada is one of the only teachers I know that really makes an attempt to learn all of the names of
her students in a large lecture environment. I really appreciate that and wish more instructors were that
Estrada, M.J.

interested in getting to know their students.
3. Quality of exams/assignments - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
Comments:
The word problems were a bit convoluted at times. Also, the last class exam was ridiculous. It was stressful
enough without a test page missing. When the page was given to us midway through the test, I was really
thrown off. My test taking technique was interrupted and my grade suffered because of it.
Exams covered important material most of the time. Sometimes I thought some other topics would have been
better to be on the short answer section (rather then the ones she picked) but she clearly put the same
emphasis on all aspects of lecture. Her exam questions were usually easy to understand, sometimes the short
answers were a little too complicated and took more time than I would have liked to read through before even
getting to answer the question.
This class has a lot of potential for assignments above and beyond exams to help put a little less pressure on
exam time since they always coincided with many other classes' exams. Even just a "post on the blog X amount
of times with relevant advertising/research" would have been cool, even just to have the opportunity. I saw so
many applications of the course material and it would have been great to have a forum to share that on.
Her exams covered good amount of materials that were thoroughly taught in class. However, there were
questions that could have been worded more clearly.
I would have liked there to have been more emphasis about what would be covered on exams. I often felt like I
studied some concepts really deeply because I thought they were important, but then they weren't covered on
the exams.
sometimes short answer questions were difficult to understand, BUT she always adjusted grades if many
students found it difficult, she would not penalize us for that
The guest lectures were not well represented on exams- they were so interesting and they only ever received
about one multiple choice question for all that class time.
The test questions were sometimes confusing and hard to answer
4. Comments on instructor - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA
She knows how to engage the class in the lecture. She is fun and energetic.
Great respect for students in class. Very relatable. Very helpful to put lecture slides online.
Great person, great professor, one of the best in the psych department.
She was always prepared for lecture and did a great job making the class interactive, even though it was a large
class.
Love you Estrada! Thanks for a great four years!
Guest Lectures and case studies
Professor Estrada was very intelligent and clearly knew what she was talking about. She went out of her way to
find interesting things to discuss in this new class and did a wonderful job. She did a great job balancing real
world material with more factual theory material to strike a great balance in the class.
Dr. Estrada is by far one of my favorite professors I've had at the UofR. She is genuinely excited about coming
to class every day and teaching (or at least should win an Oscar if not). Even on days when the last thing I want
to do is go to class, her classes are always fun and engaging.
Great lecturer.
Responsive to class, supportive, geared class to be as relevant as possible
She is great!
She can connect with students. Very easy to talk too, always willing to help.
She knows what she's doing. She also makes a lot of effort to make the course fun and valuable. For example,
she brought in guest speakers to hold lectures that were quite interesting.
Professor Estrada really cares about her students. She calls them by name and notices when they are stressed.
She reaches out to students when she notices that they haven't been themselves and it really makes the
students feel cared for.
she is all about student success, she wants us to all do well. she goes above and beyond to help her students
and gives extra examples to make concepts better understood. she also genuinely cares about each and every
student, if she feels the vibe in the classroom is stressed or everyone looks tired, she will shape her class in a
way that tries to please everyone while still getting her teaching across.
She is passionate, well connected (we had really great guests), and truly cares about what her students are

interested in and takes the time to research answers to any questions we have that she might not know the
answer to.
She's a great instructor that is obviously cares about her students and their interests and her passion for the
subject makes the class a joy.
She attempts to engage students via modern examples and interesting guest speakers
Very personable and friendly
She LOVES her students, as well as her research. She is the best professor in the psychology department. She
care about her students more than anyone else on this campus. She is constantly trying to improve herself and
her courses. She encourages student opinion and values our thoughts. She responds to EVERY SINGLE
EMAIL, which is incredible. Every student needs to take a course with her.
She makes the subject matter saliently relevant and interesting. Furthermore, she highly values interaction
She cares a lot about and respects the students.
Very focused on appealing to interests of students, willing to change syllabus to explore new material.
Professor Estrada is incredibly passionate with her research on relationships, is well-connected and loves to
bring in guest lecturers and is receptive to student input.
She is the best professor I've had in college. Everything is her strength.
Very well prepared.
Estrada is the absolute best. She's stern but so fun. She is passionate about her classes and it makes her
classes interesting. love love love her.
good lecturer, engaged student discussion
Dr. Estrada kept lectures interesting by choosing topics (and examples) that influence us all in daily life.
Professor Estrada is the best.
Many strengths, biggest is that she actually cares, and it shows throughout her course, she was one of the best
professors I had had at UofR, and I'm not just saying that because I got an A, in fact I didn't
Very knowledgable
5. Comments on course
It was a good change of pace for a psychology class. A little harder than I had anticipated, however it showed a
different side of psychology.
The guest lectures were great. I really enjoyed the branding material.
The class did a good job of combining the psychology portion and the marketing version. It gave a good
balance.
Research it brought into the class
Very interesting course that, as stated earlier, had a great balance of real world info and theory info. Something
that can really be put to use in my everyday life. I was always fascinated by some of the stuff presented and
took it home to share with my family and friends. I thought it was really cool how Prof Estrada took our interests
into consideration when choosing material to present for class (something that she may not do again, after the
first time teaching it).
It covered a wide breadth of topics within consumer behavior and was tailored to our interests.
Plenty of real-world examples and applications, adapted to student interest
A lot of good material
It covers a lot of interesting side of psychology of consumerism. Good job on integrating between psychology
and marketing.
This course will help me make better purchasing decisions in the future and help me avoid being scammed by
good marketing.
it gives a simple, clear cut way to look at consumer behavior in an applicable manner, very interesting and easily
understood.
The relevance of this course ought to be applicable to students across different disciplines, because of the
nature of consumerism.
Interesting content
The material we learned is applicable to anyone. There is no way any student walked away from that course
without looking at the advertising and consumer world differently.
Very interesting material and pretty unique.
Very engaging topic of study, hooks students interested in learning about this up and coming material.
Really great mixture of economics, marketing and psychology. Well-organized for the first semester of a new
class.

Comments:
She changed up the class a lot to reflect interests of the students, which I personally didn't like because I like
being able to read ahead of class, it was probably a good thing on the whole.
Professor Estrada was always organized and prepared for class.
All of our tangents were actually related and explored a certain area more in depth. Having the full lecture slides
(as opposed to purposefully redacted ones like in psych of gender) was really helpful because I could not keep
up with writing everything down so I could leave space and fill in the slides later.
Great course.
Class adapted to student interest. Topics covered were very interesting with minimal review
Professor Estrada was in an interesting situation in which she could tailor the lectures to the interests of the
class. I liked being able to have an opinion on what would be covered in class.
I am impressed with the work Professor Estrada puts into each lecture. She uses cutting edge examples and
research.
Sometimes it seemed like we were trying to cover too many things that weren't really on the text book, which is
fun, but it also made it difficult to study for the exams.

Summary of teaching evaluations: The University of Rochester, Simon Business School, Duke & UNC V. Student course feedback VI. Student invited talks, extra curricular activities, mentorship & popular media 2013-2014
  • 2. Estrada, M.J. 2 I. Teaching Statement Marie-Joelle Estrada I am grateful to have found my purpose in life – exploring and sharing exciting psychological findings about human behavior with my classes, colleagues and the individual students that I mentor. I believe that being a professor is the best career I could hope for; I am able to learn about topics that are intrinsically interesting to me and am paid to discuss them with a motivated audience. There is nothing more gratifying than being able to inspire excitement in others with regards to a topic that you find personally fascinating and worthwhile. Teaching Philosophy My approach to teaching has four main goals: a) maintain active student involvement in the learning process, b) focus on fostering students’ critical thinking abilities, c) provide a balance between theory and application by situating psychological theory and research in the context of real-world questions and problems, and d) provide a structure and atmosphere in my classes that facilitates learning. I will begin by discussing my teaching experiences, followed by specific examples of the ways in which I try to create an environment conducive to accomplishing these four goals. Teaching Experience Classroom Teaching. Of the many responsibilities that I have had as both a faculty member and as a graduate student, my involvement in teaching is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding. I have been teaching at the University level now for over 13 years and continue to enjoy the material and new classes I get to explore. While serving as faculty at the University of Rochester, I have had the opportunity to teach several new classes: Introduction to Psychology, Behavioral Medicine/Health Psychology the Psychology of Gender, Abnormal Psychology, Clinical Psychology and most recently The Psychology of consumerism. I was also excited to be approached by the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester to teach a graduate version of the consumer behavior class to both MS and MBA students. The classes at the University of Rochester were much larger than the ones I had had previously – ranging in size from 130 students to 200, and any given semester I was responsible for teaching more than 400 students. These classes presented some new challenges in terms of maintaining student interest, conducting in-class activities, and getting to know my students that required adapting my previous teaching style. When I was approached by a group of four students seeking to learn more about Dating and Interpersonal Relationship research, I found time in my schedule to create an independent readings class for them. I have also chosen to create an advanced Consumer Behavior Independent readings class for a few students who were interested in knowing more about the topic. While a graduate student at Duke University, I sought out three teaching opportunities: Personality and Social Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and a special topics seminar on Interpersonal Relationships and Dating. In the first two classes, the enrollment was at its limit
  • 3. Estrada, M.J. 3   (15 students), and I was solely responsible for the operation of the class, from creating the syllabus through each of the lectures, and finally the exams. For the special topics seminar, I developed my own course, an advanced seminar on Interpersonal Relationships and Dating. The conceptualization of the class, the organization of the topics, and the selection of journal articles were of my own design which was very exciting for me, given that my area of specialization within social psychology is close relationships. This seminar was largely discussion-based, accompanied by students’ personal reflections via both thought papers and a final research proposal, and consisted of using both a textbook and journal articles to supplement the in-class lecture material. In addition to my experience teaching at Duke, I also taught undergraduate classes while I was finishing my Master’s degree at the University of North Carolina. At UNC it was customary for graduate students to teach a class of approximately 50 students each semester and to be entirely responsible for that class. I taught three semesters of Introductory Social Psychology and found that it was one of the highlights of my week. I really enjoyed the dynamic aspect of sharing my interest in a field that I find fascinating and to have students become excited by the topics as well. My enthusiasm for teaching was also evident to my students; during my time at UNC, I received two departmental commendations for having some of the highest teacher evaluation ratings and was also nominated by my students for the Edward Kidder Graham teaching award. Mentorship. I also enjoy fostering learning through one-on-one mentorship with both my classroom students and my independent project students. I encourage my students to stop by during office hours with any information that they may have relevant to class or to discuss any topics that they found especially compelling. It is not unusual for me to run into students later on campus and have them stop me to talk about how they still think of or use what they learned in my class. With my honors students, I enjoy fostering their critical thinking by helping them design a program of research that meshes within my own area of expertise. Although the projects we are working on are within my area of research, under my guidance each of my students have contributed independent and innovative suggestions that make our project a truly collaborative effort. This spring, I finished supervising a Master’s thesis for a student in public Health (Yitong Gao) entitled “Motivations Underlying Women’s Hookup Experiences and Perceived Limitations to Condom Use”. I am also co-supervising a McNair scholar for summer 2015 (Chizi Onyekwere) on her community outreach project on women’s experience of domestic violence. Finally, I believe that mentorship should extend beyond the classroom to the University community at large. In keeping with this philosophy, I am proud to be the faculty mentor for the Sigma Rho fraternity; a multi-cultural fraternity that seeks to increase diversity and cultural appreciation on campus. They organize such awareness raising events such as a candlelight vigil for the victims of the Nepal earthquake and a memorial ceremony for victims of the Rwanda genocide. In keeping with the spirit of community involvement at the University, I am also active with the Office of Minority Student Affairs and chose to participate in the Early College Opportunity program. The ECO provides incoming freshmen from disadvantaged backgrounds with some pre-college experience and classes and often have a hard time finding faculty who are willing to give up part of their summer to participate.
  • 4. Estrada, M.J. 4   Accomplishing My Teaching Goals Foster critical thinking skills. I believe that there are two key components to successfully learning about psychology. The first involves the learning of theory and concepts and understanding the methods by which researchers study human behavior. Especially important to social psychology is understanding why the field is scientific, and how, under the right set of circumstances, we can draw conclusions about people in general, above and beyond individual variation. However, a second and equally important component involves the development and the use of critical thinking skills in the application of psychological theory. Accordingly, my second goal when teaching social psychology is to foster the broad development and application of each student’s critical thinking skills. When discussing a theory in class, I often challenge students to think on their feet about questions not covered in the text or in my notes. For example, I might ask them about limitations of the current theory and how they would design a study that addresses those limitations. I might also ask them what the theory would predict in a tangentially related situation, draw comparisons between similar theories and ask them to differentiate the two, or invite students to share their personal experiences of times in which they have seen this theory illustrated in their own lives. To this end, I strive to maintain a casual, relaxed, and accessible atmosphere in my class that increases the comfort level of the students. I actively encourage students to stop me during the lecture with questions and to challenge any incorrect assumptions that they believe may exist about the topic at hand. I encourage my students to approach me with questions and to stay after class to discuss the material or help them understand concepts. For students who are struggling with my class, I encourage them to schedule extra one-on-one review sessions in order to clarify the material. Taken together, I believe that I am able to create a classroom environment and foster student-teacher relationships that promote learning and motivation. Balance theory and application. One of the joys of teaching psychology is its relevance to everyday life. I attempt to balance theory and application through the content of my lecture material and through my use of in-class exercises and movie clips. In my lectures, I cover the theory and research but also illustrate how the material may apply to students’ everyday lives. For example, during the attitudes section as a summary for all the persuasive techniques, I engage a discussion of “how best to try to convince your parents to let you go away for spring break.” During my lecture on eating disorders, we took time to look at the on-line support network that many disordered eating individuals resort to, and later that week had a Student Health Dietitian give a guest lecture about eating disorders on campus and the resources available to students. Other examples include having students participate as a group in an on-line study rating whether smiles are genuine or artificial or having them play the interactive ‘bomb shelter’ game to illustrate kinds of conformity. I also strive to include both some academic and non-academic video clips (e.g., a Pepsi commercial to illustrate dissonance) to illustrate instances of theories and empirical findings. The non-academic video clips are especially compelling as students begin to look at everyday occurrences from a psychological perspective. Organization of the class and provision of support materials. A challenge commonly encountered by students in lecture courses is that they become overwhelmed with the amount of information presented during class. Students are often faced with the choice of either trying to listen and understand the concepts or scrambling to create notes for themselves. To help alleviate
  • 5. Estrada, M.J. 5   this problem, I teach all of my courses using PowerPoint presentations, which I then edit to create general outlines. These outlines to my lectures are posted on Blackboard the day before each class so that students can then bring these notes to class and follow along as I present the information. The majority of my outlines contain brief summary versions of my actual lecture notes minus key findings such as the conclusion of the experiments or material not covered in the textbook. My goal is to provide students with enough of a structure that they are able to listen and understand the concepts, but they are still required to come to class, pay attention, and take notes in order to receive a good grade. Thus, students invest their concentration not on rote transcription of information but on gaining an understanding of the concepts presented in lecture, which also affords more time for discussion, broad application of the theory, and questions that students may have. Summary In short, my teaching philosophy is organized around four key goals—to maintain active student involvement, foster students’ critical thinking abilities, provide a balance between theory and application by using relevant real-life examples, and provide a structure and atmosphere that facilitate learning. Taken together, I believe the strategies that I use to meet my goals significantly improve students’ abilities to learn the material and to apply these findings to the world in which they live. I love the intellectual stimulation provided by my own research, but I am equally passionate about sharing my interests with a classroom of students. I have very much enjoyed the classes that I have taught thus far and look forward to continuing my involvement in teaching for many years to come.

Each exam will cover all material reviewed in class, including any discussions, video clips, in-class exercises. Exams will be made up of a combination of multiple choice and short answer exams. The unit exams will not be cumulative; i.e. each exam will cover only the material presented since the previous exam. A cumulative final (worth 80 points) will be available but is NOT required. If you choose to take the final exam, this score will replace your lowest unit exam grade. In other words, if you are not satisfied with your score on one of the unit exams, you may choose to take the final exam. Policy Concerning Make-up Exams: Ψ   Ψ
  • 9. Estrada, M.J.   9   The policy of this course is that no make-up exams will be given. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO MAKE ANY OF THE LISTED EXAM DATES, YOU ARE CHOOSING TO TAKE THE OPTIONAL CUMULATIVE FINAL. If you miss more than one exam due to a truly unfortunate incident (and can be verified by the Dean of Students), you will be allowed to make up your points. The make up exam provided is discretionary, but will most likely either take the form of an essay exam or a 15-page paper on an assigned topic. Attendance: Attendance will not be taken, however it is strongly encouraged since all material covered in class can appear on exams. You are responsible for all the material covered in class. Special Needs Students with special conditions as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act who need test or other course materials furnished in an alternate format should notify me as soon as possible. Extra Credit Policy The maximum number of credit hours that can be applied to extra credit is 8.0; 8 hours of credit will raise your final grade approximately 4%. The maximum amount of credit is guaranteed to move a student from within one grade range into the next highest grade (e.g., from a B to a B+ or from a B+ to an A-). You must allocate credits earned in SONA to specific courses, and credits earned this semester must be ‘spent’ this semester. Please note that SONA doesn’t open until after the second week of class has started and it will close the last day of the reading period at 5pm. No faculty instructors are affiliated with SONA so if you are experiencing any problems, please contact the administrator (exphelp@psych.rochester). More information on research participation and SONA is provided at the end of the syllabus, after the course calendar. Upper Level Writing (Optional) A small number of students will be allowed to take a tag-along section of this course to get upper-level writing credit toward the psychology major. To participate in this class, you must be a psychology major who has not yet fulfilled the two-course upper level writing requirement for the psychology major. Depending on demand for places in this tag-along section of the course, seniors will be given first choice, juniors will be given second choice, and so on. Students will apply for a spot in the class during the second week of the semester and eligible students will be emailed a permission code. NOTE: When you get permission to be in the tag-along writing course, it is your responsibility to register for a SECOND writing class (W) the day you receive the code: 1) You register for CSP/PSY 267 for 4.0 credits. The requirements for that course are exactly the same for you as they are for everyone else in the course, and your grade is based on the three exams, plus participation in research projects. 2) In addition, you must register for a second course, CSP/PSY 267W for 0.5 credits. You will get credit toward your upper-level writing requirement only if you have registered for both courses. PLEASE NOTE: Your grade for the 0.5 credit tag-along course will be completely separate from your grade for the course itself, and it will have nothing to do with your test grades or your research participation. The grade for the tag-along course will be determined wholly on the basis of your grades on the papers, and will in no way influence your grade for the actual course (CSP/PSY 267). To get credit for this tag-along course you will need to write three (3) papers, and then rewrite one (1) of them. Each paper should be about 5 pages long (12 pt font, double spaced, 1” margins) plus a page of references, and must be typed. Papers must be written in APA format – including references where applicable. The papers will each get a grade based on both content and style (including grammar). NOTE: YOU MUST REWRITE PAPER 1 or 2 by the end of the semester. Although the re-written paper will not get a grade

Rapport with students - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: Professor Estrada always made herself available for student questions and concerns and always seemed genuinely interested in making sure everyone understood the material. I was so impressed that Professor Estrada knew everyone's names and called on students individually. I really felt that I mattered in that classroom. She encourages questions, and readily initiates discussions in class that are relevant to the course material. She made a big effort to get to know and recognize every student in her large lecture hall class, which is impressive. She is approachable in and out of class and is very friendly. Prof. Estrada was available for questions and she was approachable. Professor Estrada encouraged a lot of participation in class and it was evident that she held a good rapport with us. I like how much she valued our input, inside the class and when she would share links or articles that we would send her outside of class. I also like that she asked for about me power points to take the time to actually get to know us and learn our names! Very open to questions and clarifications when necessary. This class had 125 people but it felt like a seminar-sized class. I've never been in a class this big that had so much participation. Professor Estrada was genuinely interested, not just in answering our questions, but in what we thought about the material. We all learned from each other. Professor Estrada is excellent during office hours. She creates a safe space in class and when I go for extra help. She always answers my questions throughly and makes students feel comfortable both in class and office hours. This was the first class I raised my hand to speak in. Excellent rapport with students. She even remembers the names of the entire class. The professor had weekly office hours to offer help. Dr. Estrada really showed that she cared about her students personally and wanted us to be successful. She always wanted to hear our opinions and asked us each to make a powerpoint about ourselves to learn our names, which no other professor I have had has done. 2. Comments on instructor - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Professor Estrada is an animated lecturer, she talks to her students rather than at them, and her demonstrated passion for the material she covers makes her class incredibly enjoyable and easy to learn in. seems quite personable. Openness to student opinions, really wants to make sure you understand the material, so will go back over a slide during lecture if you ask. Always was available for extra help during office hours. Handled sensitive topics relating to gender very well, and gave information that was ultimately empowering for students. Professor Estrada was such an interesting lecturer and I always enjoyed this class. The topics covered are very interesting and Professor Estrada did a wonderful job relating everything to the student's lives. She LOVES the material, her passion is very evident as well as her knowledge about gender issues. She speaks clearly and keeps you engaged with funny stories or hypotheticals that make you think more in depth about the material as well as what positions you might have held. She is a very clear lecturer. She loves the material she teaches which makes her enjoyable to be taught by. Prof. Estrada loved teaching this class. You can tell by the way the material was presented. Professor Estrada is very passionate about this subject and it clearly shows in her teaching. She is very good at presenting the material, but also in making it interesting and relevant to our lives. I thought it was very impressive how thorough she was in covering so many topics, but I never felt like I was overwhelmed. Dedicated to her work and her students - you get the feeling she really cares, which is not something you find in all professors, particularly of professors who teach classes with over 100 students. I was amazed at her ability to know every students name - seriously, the best professor I have had at the U of R She has a genuine interest in the topics that was apparent and was always willing to answer questions to explain the material better. Professor Estrada is brilliant, engaging, and an excellent role model. She doesn't "teach to the "test," but really wants us to evolve our thought process. Students admire her but she is still very approachable and makes time for all her students despite the large class size. Prof. Estrada is such an inspiration. She breaks stereotypes and makes me feel like anything is possible. I firmly
  • 15. Estrada, M.J.   15   believe that every student (of every gender and sexual orientation) should take a course with her. Passion and joy that Professor ESTRADA has in teaching really helps students to be happy and learning actively in class. She answers questions when students ask. She also goes back slides when students have not finished. She is also available to help answer questions during exams. Passion, knowledge, and genuine concern for her students. Professor Estrada is extremely inspiring. This class was thought-provoking and I looked forward going to this class. Prof. Estrada showed enthusiasm and passion when teaching the class which was extremely helpful and great to see. She made sure that we understood the material and always asked the class if there was any confusion in anything presented. She is personable, loves teaching the material and fosters great class discussions. -Passionate and intelligent -Very well-reserched -Takes the opinions of her students into consideration very enthusiastic about course and gets students excited to learn material Brilliant and excited about the class. It was really cool to know that the instructor actually cared and took the time to learn about each student in the class. She was also very passionate about the material which translated to the students She keeps everything very interesting, and cares about the opinions of every student no matter what it is. Professor Estrada is a well respected and highly valued professor among the students of the U of R. This is my second class I've taken with her, and she knows not only my name, but has taken the time to get to know me. She's personal, stylish, and an amazing role model. -Excellent rapport with the students - Invigorates the class topic - Good degree of involving class with topic via interactive questions - Has exams be in the same room and time for better recollection chance Estrada truly cares about this material and this course. She works hard to make the class very fun and relatable for college students. She also is very willing to listen to what students want to learn and tailor her lectures accordingly. She is like a celebrity on campus and the whole student body knows about her and this class! She is a great teacher! generally organized, passionate and understanding Clear and well-informed. Passionate about the subject. She keeps class interesting As always, Dr Estrada was knowledgeable and excited both in and out of class about the topic. Her personal love for the topic is extremely evident and makes the course that much more valuable and enjoyable. she is very educated about this area of psychology and her passion shows through in her teaching She's one of the greatest lecturers at this university. She could probably make a course about snails and it would be interesting. Incredibly engaging and unafraid to discuss controversial topics. Professor Estrada is one of the best professors I have had at the U of R. She is a very engaging lecturer and is extremely receptive to student opinions. She also spends a lot of time getting to know her students and knew everyone's names by the second or third lecture. She really cares about student's learning the material and is always willing to meet with students outside of class. very enthusiastic in teaching. Professor is genuinely interested in this subject and wants to engage in in-depth conversations with students. she is extremely open to helping students succeed in course, through being available of extra help by email or additional office hours. she loves what she is teaching You are WONDERFUL. All of the explanations in class were concise with numbers and examples to back it up. Professor Estrada is very aware of her students thoughts and feelings. She adjusts the class to our needs. Her knowledge on the topics, and ability to make it related to the real world Always enthusiastic about teaching this class, shows clips related to the topic we're learning. Makes class fun and puts a lot of effort into making every class a good class. Giving real life examples, making the material relatable. Encouraging student comments and having discussions in class (especially hard with such a big class!). Very approachable. I really enjoyed the relevant current articles posted in the announcements throughout the course. Topics were well organized. Exceptional professor overall. 3. Comments on course This course has an incredible professor, incredibly interesting and relevant subject matter that every student should learn, and a fantastic classroom dynamic. Challenges the way you think about gender in everyday life, making you think critically about issues. The material itself, the video clips and visuals, order that the material was presented in really flowed. Interesting, relatable, somewhat student influenced (which lectures we prefer over the other etc.) The material in general is the course's strength because it is relevant to the real world. The materials in this class were vividly applicable to real life experiences. It allows students to discuss and learn things about life. Having an open mind in this class will definitely cause a life change. Loved it! This course is probably my favorite I have taken so far. It is extremely relevant in the real world and helped me gain a new perspective on so many things. The material was so interesting that I often found myself talking about it with my other friends in a non-academic setting because I just wanted to share! It really makes you think about topics that we SHOULD be thinking about but don't. It has really changed my perceptions of the media and how to think about the images that are constantly being pushed in my direction It covers a wide range of interesting topics that are very relevant and important for people to know and be aware
  • 16. Estrada, M.J.   16   of. Very informative. Extremely valuable class that challenges our thought processes and teaches us to evaluate ourselves and our experiences critically. The course format and course material are excellent. The combination of traditional lecture with discussion make for an ideal learning environment. The course material is extremely interesting and relevant for all humans! It prepares students for adulthood, jobs, relationships, parenthood, and general life. Although it was an elective, this was the most valuable course I have taken in my three years at the UR so far. The applicability in real life. I changed my perspective towards woman, to be more equal. The class has in-class discussions and is a very engaging class. It provides a great background of gender issues through the lens of psychology and also is very interesting to apply to society and one's own life. Great material covered. Interesting, relevant etc. I think there needs to be a psychology of race course. We shouldn't just be having these sorts of discussions about gender and sexuality! Incredibly interesting and applicable to the real world covered several interesting and controversial topics There was a lot if information that many people don't think about when it comes to gender and I found the course extremely informative and relatable to every day life Professor Estrada's enthusiastic love for this topic makes this course one of the best offered under PSY/CSP. - Stays Objective about Gender Controversial Issues - Very Informative for Serious Gender-related issues - Entirely lecture-based -- promotes involvement and no book-related pressure everyone should take this class.. a lot of this stuff is misunderstood by the public Very clear and focused curriculum. Fascinating and presently relevant material. I loved this class it is a very interesting class, and very relatable and i loved learning about this topic Everything I would recommend that every student take this course. I initially took this class for my major in Public Health, however, I learned a lot that was very applicable to life. I think everyone would benefit from learning about psychology of gender and how gender inequality is a lot more prevalent in society then people realize. This is my favorite class that I've taken at college. It got me to think about things I've never considered and reevaluate my opinions about a lot of things. I loved it. It is a gem and unlike anything else offered at UR. The topics and how they're studied Relevance to real life. Well organized and understandable, for each topic there was supporting studies and real applications. Unique course-- you can't get this material by reading a textbook. This class was very enjoyable and enlightening. One of my all-time favorite classes! She is lovely and intelligent! 4. Teaching skills - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: Incredible examples that always clarified the concepts. I love all of the visuals and video clips. She slows down if students tell her she is going to fast, she takes the time to break down any difficult material using diagrams or the blackboard until she is sure everyone understands. She obviously loves this material and it definitely shows through in how she teaches it. She makes people want to come to class and want to listen. Prof. Estrada vibes off the class. She notices when the class is vacant or if the class is drained. She adjusts and puts in effort to make sure when those days come, that the class is still exciting and interesting. Professor Estrada is a very good lecturer who is very concise and clear in the way she words both her power points and lectures. Whenever students had difficulty, she always had another example to clarify, and would always follow up with us to make sure we understood the material. Very enthusiastic! Awesome to have a class with a professor who is so dedicated not only to the topic she is teaching but also to the students she teaches to. Sometimes the amount of studies was overwhelming and a bit confusing to follow. ALWAYS had examples from videos, tv, documentaries, magazines, to help support her points with. Really helped us to connect the concepts with real life. Professor Estrada is one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from throughout my entire academic career. I always look forward to her class, as it never seems like a chore to attend. Professor ESTRADA is a very engaging teacher who is communicative and interesting with lots of examples to teaching, which brings life to what we learn. The professor tried to explain herself when students did not understand and she went back slides if students were not finished with a slide. 5. Quality of exams/assignments - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: She makes sure to show up for the first half of exams and to clarify anything that people might not know or understand. She also provided a lot of supplemental (optional) material for people to read. Her exams can be difficult but they were fair. All the material on the exams came from class. They were the
  • 17. Estrada, M.J.   17   perfect length for the class time given to complete them. Exams were effective in making sure you knew the concepts. Details were tested too. However, they were interesting topics so it was not mind boggling exams. If some topics that were on the power points were not covered in class, then they were not on the exam. Prof. Estrada made it clear what was or what was not on the exams. Exams also covered important aspects of the course and tested the material that we learned well. The exams were the best psychology exams I've ever taken. They were clear, concise, yet not ridiculously easy. Sometimes the wording of the test questions could be a little confusing 6. Organization - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: It was sometimes frustrating how slides in the posted powerpoints were missing or out of order Well organized, if anything is not working on the powerpoint she readily finds the actual file on her computer. She also provides the full slides if hers are not the same as ours for any reason. All of her lectures had a clear focus and she came prepared to lecture them appropriately. I appreciate how she always reviews the power points right before class so that she knows exactly what she will be covering! Annoying technical difficulties - not any fault of the professor though - more to do with the classroom Sometimes the class drifted off topic, but not too often. I wish we had a little more time to cover the material so we didn't have to choose between lectures! It's all so interesting. Prof. Estrada is by far the most organized professor I have ever had a course with. It is very refreshing to know that the class will always start and end on time and that the entire course will be full of relevant, interesting, and diverse material. Fairly well-organized. Professor ESTRADA seems to be always prepared with her own note to teach us. The professor was not able to completely finish her lectures for the class. She does like to have discussions with her classmates, though. Prof. Estrada is extremely knowledgeable in the material covered by this class and was always well prepared. Time was never wasted and the discussions in the class were extremely thought-provoking and interesting. Lecture was my favorite to attend out of all of my courses. could have a limit for student feedback in class and try and call on more than just a few students This was my favorite class I think I've ever taken. It was extremely relevant to my everyday life and extremely interesting.
  • 18. Estrada, M.J.   18   Teaching Evaluation Summary (Spring 2014) Comment Summary Instructor: ESTRADA, MARIE-JOELLE Subject: 1CSP 232 CRN: 75293 Course Title: PSYCHOLOGY OF CONSUMERISM Enrollment: 126 Responses Incl Declines: 86 (Declined: 0) Same as: 1PSY232, 1CSP232, 1PSY232 1. Teaching skills - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: She is very good at presenting the material. Very aware of student's needs/questions. Exams were pretty tricky and it's somewhat difficult to see what the important take away points were. That being said when students asked questions she always tried to help as best she could to make sure they were in a position to help themselves as best they could prior to the test. Love her teaching style! I think it was harder because this was the first year the course was offered, so she didn't know exactly how/what to teach - but she did a great job with something new to her! Professor Estrada used real world examples that made the class completely worth taking not only because it was interesting but because everything could be related back to my everyday life. It was clear she pout a ton of work into preparing material for this class, including finding research and looking at multiple textbooks to compile interesting material for class. If there was infinite time, it would have been awesome to have more examples. But alas, there is not infinite time. Everything was very clearly explained. Amazing instructor. She used a variety of teaching tools and guest lecturers, which helped keep the course relevant and exciting For a class being taught for the first time it was reasonable but the important points that showed up on the exam were way to specific for what was discussed in class. Amazing professor, always willing to help students understand the material. Professor Estrada does put her effort to go more in depth to explain when students have questions or don't understand very much. Dr. Estrada is excellent. She really makes material exciting and easy to learn Professor Estrada often had good examples in class, but would not include them in the lecture slides. I found the examples to be very helpful and would try my best to copy down what professor Estrada was saying, but as a visual learner, I would have really liked it if the examples shown in the lecture during class were included in the downloadable version available to students. Professor Estrada was very receptive to what the class was interested in and adjusted the topics of her lectures to meet the interests of students. 2. Rapport with students - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: Great respect for students. One of the most approachable and dedicated professors. You can tell from her class persona and emails that she puts a lot of though into this class and cares about her students. Professor Estrada was very willing to take comments and questions from students and often went out of her way to answer questions that students had about material (going so far as to researching the questions for them). She did insist on us meeting with the TAs if we had questions, I wish that I had been able to meet with her more because she seems so intelligent. All questions were met with enthusiasm and extra research (re: Dora) and discussion was highly encouraged, which was great. Dr. Estrada's strong effort to get to know all of us is something unique in larger classes and made it seem like we weren't in a large lecture hall. Her tailoring the topics to our interests was also awesome and demonstrated her high respect for us as individuals. You can easily see that she cares for all students. Very responsive and provided research data when applicable She is not the most friendly/ approachable/ respectful professor in U of R. At a personal level, she is very assertive and could come off as mean at times. However, in class, she is very willing to answer questions and is pretty clear. Professor Estrada is one of the only teachers I know that really makes an attempt to learn all of the names of her students in a large lecture environment. I really appreciate that and wish more instructors were that
  • 19. Estrada, M.J.   19   interested in getting to know their students. 3. Quality of exams/assignments - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: The word problems were a bit convoluted at times. Also, the last class exam was ridiculous. It was stressful enough without a test page missing. When the page was given to us midway through the test, I was really thrown off. My test taking technique was interrupted and my grade suffered because of it. Exams covered important material most of the time. Sometimes I thought some other topics would have been better to be on the short answer section (rather then the ones she picked) but she clearly put the same emphasis on all aspects of lecture. Her exam questions were usually easy to understand, sometimes the short answers were a little too complicated and took more time than I would have liked to read through before even getting to answer the question. This class has a lot of potential for assignments above and beyond exams to help put a little less pressure on exam time since they always coincided with many other classes' exams. Even just a "post on the blog X amount of times with relevant advertising/research" would have been cool, even just to have the opportunity. I saw so many applications of the course material and it would have been great to have a forum to share that on. Her exams covered good amount of materials that were thoroughly taught in class. However, there were questions that could have been worded more clearly. I would have liked there to have been more emphasis about what would be covered on exams. I often felt like I studied some concepts really deeply because I thought they were important, but then they weren't covered on the exams. sometimes short answer questions were difficult to understand, BUT she always adjusted grades if many students found it difficult, she would not penalize us for that The guest lectures were not well represented on exams- they were so interesting and they only ever received about one multiple choice question for all that class time. The test questions were sometimes confusing and hard to answer 4. Comments on instructor - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA She knows how to engage the class in the lecture. She is fun and energetic. Great respect for students in class. Very relatable. Very helpful to put lecture slides online. Great person, great professor, one of the best in the psych department. She was always prepared for lecture and did a great job making the class interactive, even though it was a large class. Love you Estrada! Thanks for a great four years! Guest Lectures and case studies Professor Estrada was very intelligent and clearly knew what she was talking about. She went out of her way to find interesting things to discuss in this new class and did a wonderful job. She did a great job balancing real world material with more factual theory material to strike a great balance in the class. Dr. Estrada is by far one of my favorite professors I've had at the UofR. She is genuinely excited about coming to class every day and teaching (or at least should win an Oscar if not). Even on days when the last thing I want to do is go to class, her classes are always fun and engaging. Great lecturer. Responsive to class, supportive, geared class to be as relevant as possible She is great! She can connect with students. Very easy to talk too, always willing to help. She knows what she's doing. She also makes a lot of effort to make the course fun and valuable. For example, she brought in guest speakers to hold lectures that were quite interesting. Professor Estrada really cares about her students. She calls them by name and notices when they are stressed. She reaches out to students when she notices that they haven't been themselves and it really makes the students feel cared for. she is all about student success, she wants us to all do well. she goes above and beyond to help her students and gives extra examples to make concepts better understood. she also genuinely cares about each and every student, if she feels the vibe in the classroom is stressed or everyone looks tired, she will shape her class in a way that tries to please everyone while still getting her teaching across. She is passionate, well connected (we had really great guests), and truly cares about what her students are
  • 20. Estrada, M.J.   20   interested in and takes the time to research answers to any questions we have that she might not know the answer to. She's a great instructor that is obviously cares about her students and their interests and her passion for the subject makes the class a joy. She attempts to engage students via modern examples and interesting guest speakers Very personable and friendly She LOVES her students, as well as her research. She is the best professor in the psychology department. She care about her students more than anyone else on this campus. She is constantly trying to improve herself and her courses. She encourages student opinion and values our thoughts. She responds to EVERY SINGLE EMAIL, which is incredible. Every student needs to take a course with her. She makes the subject matter saliently relevant and interesting. Furthermore, she highly values interaction She cares a lot about and respects the students. Very focused on appealing to interests of students, willing to change syllabus to explore new material. Professor Estrada is incredibly passionate with her research on relationships, is well-connected and loves to bring in guest lecturers and is receptive to student input. She is the best professor I've had in college. Everything is her strength. Very well prepared. Estrada is the absolute best. She's stern but so fun. She is passionate about her classes and it makes her classes interesting. love love love her. good lecturer, engaged student discussion Dr. Estrada kept lectures interesting by choosing topics (and examples) that influence us all in daily life. Professor Estrada is the best. Many strengths, biggest is that she actually cares, and it shows throughout her course, she was one of the best professors I had had at UofR, and I'm not just saying that because I got an A, in fact I didn't Very knowledgable 5. Comments on course It was a good change of pace for a psychology class. A little harder than I had anticipated, however it showed a different side of psychology. The guest lectures were great. I really enjoyed the branding material. The class did a good job of combining the psychology portion and the marketing version. It gave a good balance. Research it brought into the class Very interesting course that, as stated earlier, had a great balance of real world info and theory info. Something that can really be put to use in my everyday life. I was always fascinated by some of the stuff presented and took it home to share with my family and friends. I thought it was really cool how Prof Estrada took our interests into consideration when choosing material to present for class (something that she may not do again, after the first time teaching it). It covered a wide breadth of topics within consumer behavior and was tailored to our interests. Plenty of real-world examples and applications, adapted to student interest A lot of good material It covers a lot of interesting side of psychology of consumerism. Good job on integrating between psychology and marketing. This course will help me make better purchasing decisions in the future and help me avoid being scammed by good marketing. it gives a simple, clear cut way to look at consumer behavior in an applicable manner, very interesting and easily understood. The relevance of this course ought to be applicable to students across different disciplines, because of the nature of consumerism. Interesting content The material we learned is applicable to anyone. There is no way any student walked away from that course without looking at the advertising and consumer world differently. Very interesting material and pretty unique. Very engaging topic of study, hooks students interested in learning about this up and coming material. Really great mixture of economics, marketing and psychology. Well-organized for the first semester of a new class.
  • 21. Estrada, M.J.   21   Interesting topic, very applicable to real life, the book was fascinating. The teacher Covered a lot of interesting topics Very cool material, knowledgeable instructor guest lecturers 6. Organization - MARIE-JOELLE ESTRADA Comments: She changed up the class a lot to reflect interests of the students, which I personally didn't like because I like being able to read ahead of class, it was probably a good thing on the whole. Professor Estrada was always organized and prepared for class. All of our tangents were actually related and explored a certain area more in depth. Having the full lecture slides (as opposed to purposefully redacted ones like in psych of gender) was really helpful because I could not keep up with writing everything down so I could leave space and fill in the slides later. Great course. Class adapted to student interest. Topics covered were very interesting with minimal review Professor Estrada was in an interesting situation in which she could tailor the lectures to the interests of the class. I liked being able to have an opinion on what would be covered in class. I am impressed with the work Professor Estrada puts into each lecture. She uses cutting edge examples and research. Sometimes it seemed like we were trying to cover too many things that weren't really on the text book, which is fun, but it also made it difficult to study for the exams.
