1. I studied Sociology in undergraduate level and obtained a master degree in social
work. My love in teaching Sociology stems from my belief in understanding reality
from social context. Students experiences are raw materials processed and shared
collectively thereby advancing the frontier of knowledge. I believe that every student
brings to the classroom vast arrays of knowledge shared collectively during class.
I teach sociology to empower students to gain deep knowledge of the impact of
environment on human behavior, by engaging my students in dialogue based on
mutual validation. Students interests in learning grow when they feel safe and know
that their views and experiences are valued. My students are taught to be lifelong
learners. As an instructor, I model social work practice in the classroom and in my
personal contact with students by using ethical, compassionate social work approach
for students.
My goal in teaching is to encourage learning and self-discovery. I deploy multiple
social work theories and skills to concretely simplify abstract concepts.I establish safe
classroom condition for learning to thrive.
My teaching methods include didactic teaching methods, short lectures, assigned
readings, guest speakers, videos and group discussions. I make short presentations to
provide necessary background information. For students to take on the role of active
participant, it is essential that they read carefully, prepare questions, and bring to class
the issues they wish to discuss. My primary role is to pose questions, clarify points,
and summarize the important issues discussed during class.
As a social worker with a strong background in sociology, I respect the diverse
learning styles and worldviews of my students and the communities to which they
belong. Consequently, I work to create an environment where students can express
their concerns and desires and believes that the entire class benefits from this
exchange. Within diversity and inclusion, students grow intellectually and develop
critical thinking skills.
