GREGORIO Y.
ZARA
Gregorio Y. Zara (8 March 1902 – 15 October 1978) was a Filipino
engineer and physicist best remembered for inventing the first two-
way video telephone. Zara’s video telephone invention enabled the
caller and recipient to see each other while conversing, laying the
foundation for video-conferencing. Other notable creations include
an induction compass used by pilots for direction, a solar-powered
water heater and an alcohol-fuelled aero plane engine. Zara also
discovered a law of electrical kinetic resistance known as the Zara
effect. In the preceding year, Zara had also won the first prize for
another invention, the SOLAR OVEN, which absorbs heat from the
sun via a plate absorber which conducts the stored heat to the oven
grills. Six years before that he had won a gold medal for his alcohol-
fueled airplane engine from the Societyof Filipino Inventors. He was
among the first to be given accolade as "National Scientist of the
Philippines' in 1978
Almeda is known in the innovation industry for inventing various
food processing machines, including the meat grinder, rice grinder
and coconut grater, which remain widely and commonly used today.
His inventions bettered the Philippines' food industry by paving the
way for innovative food processing technologies. The highly
practical coconut grater invented in 1949 by Benjamin Almeda, Sr.
continues to this day as a fixture in all public markets. His ice shaver
unit for making halo-halo, barbecue cooker, hot dog griller, waffle
cooker, improved oven, and portable toasters designed for and used
in fast food restaurants and sandwich stands have earned for the
inventor numerous awards, both national and international,
including the Presidential Panday Pira Award for Skilled Technician
in 1977. A few years later, Almeda garnered the gold medal from the
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Paulo C. Campos (July 27, 1921 – June 2, 2007) was
a Filipino physician and educator noted for his promotion of wider
community health care and his achievements in the field of nuclear
medicine for which he was dubbed as "The Father of Nuclear
Medicine in the Philippines" Campos was also known for establishing
the first and best known Radioisotope Laboratory in the country, the
first Research Laboratory in UP's Department of Medicine, and the
Thyroid Clinic of the UP-Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Medical
Center.

RAMON C.
BARBA
Ramon Cabanos Barba ONS (August 31, 1939 – October 10, 2021)
was a Filipino inventor and horticulturist best known for inventing a
way to induce more flowers in mango trees using ethrel and
potassium nitrate. Barba was proclaimed a National Scientist of the
Philippines in June 2014. Barba developed a tissue culture procedure
for the banana plant which enabled production of large quantities of
planting materials that were robust and disease-free. He also
developed a tissue culture procedure for sugar cane that allowed
the rapid production of large amounts of disease-free planting
materials.
Magdalena Villaruz is Filipino inventor and entrepreneur, b-1934. In
the 1960s she designed and produced a machine called the Turtle
Power Tiller, a tractor with a float. It is capable of tilling soil in the
most rain-sodden fields (rice-paddies). Magdalena now heads a
large company that manufactures and markets the machine in many
tropical countries. A prolific inventor, she is the holder of many
patents for agricultural equipment. In addition, she is very active in
inventor organizations in the Philippines, and was the first woman
to win the Philippines Inventor of the Year Award (1986). Then in
1995 she was awarded the World Intellectual Property
Organization’s gold medal, in recognition of being the most
outstanding woman inventor in the Philippines.

VILLARUZ
RUDY LANTANO
In 1996, Rudy Lantano Sr., a scientist from the Philippine
Department of Science and Technology (DOST), won the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) gold medal for developing
Alco-Diesel, Lan-Gas fuel and the Super Bunker Formula-L blends.
These are very good alternative to the country’s industrial and
commercial fuel requirements during these times of rising fuel costs.
This revolutionary product is a mixture of up to 50 percent water
and ordinary bunker-C fuel used by industries but burns better and
emits less pollutant by up to 95 percent.

ROBERTO S.
SALIDO
Roberto S. Salido (1936 –) was a Filipino inventor best known for
developing plant fertilizers. He was awarded the World Intellectual
Property Organization's (WIPO) Gold Medal for the most
outstanding invention. He is also referred to as "The Soil
Nutritionist." In Salido's mind, there is the possibility of creating
fertilizer that does not add chemicals to the soil while maintaining
ecological balance. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, humus, beneficial
microbes (nitrogen-fixing bacteria), micro and trace elements,
agricultural time, and plant hormones are all included in its
formulation.
Erlinda Castro-Sanqui was among the first who saw the benefits of
herbal teas like lagundi, sambong, banaba, ampalaya, and pito-
pito through her Rita Ritz line. Hannah Mojica’s loofah mats and
soap pockets are made from patola and help to prevent skin
disease. The tea invention was also awarded the bronze medal at
the 25th Salon International des Inventions in Geneva. During that
same exhibition in 1997, she also won two silver medals for her
banaba tea and for herbal dash, a salt substitute which uses 21
herbs.
ERLINDA CASTRO-
SANQUI Bonifacio R. Isidro was a Filipino inventor of 41 objects, for which he
received the Presidential Medal. In 1983, he received the WIPO Gold
Medal for excellence in invention, and in 1985, he received the same
award for his invention at the Multi-Crop Sheller. Bonifacio was not
ashamed of the fact that he did not complete his college education.
He even enjoys making fun of the fact that he is more educated than
others because he has attended first grade twice. Bonifacio's failure
to complete high school didn't stop him. Bonifacio was chosen to
receive money and recognition in 1984 for his Forage crusher, which
was useful for making pig and poultry feed. Everyone chose him in
1985 for the Instant Multi-Crop Sheller/ Husker, which can peel 60
boxes of corn, sunflowers, legumes, or soy beans. Some of his
inventions are: Immediately Thresher-Model C, Instant Multi-Crop
Sheller / Husker, Sorghum Thresher, Bon-Car Tricycle, Plant
Watering Device, Low Cost Windmill, Improved Reaper, Utility Cart,
Field Headgear, High Efficiency Sand-sitter, LaharSand-refiner, Giant
Diamond-toothed Marble Cutters.

EDGARDO G.
VALDEZ
Edgardo G. Vazquez (1951 -) is credited with inventing the pre-
fabricated fence Vazbuilt, which is used as a wall on some Luzon
expressways. In 1995, it was awarded the World Intellectual
Property Organization's Gold Medal. Edgardo graduated from San
Beda College with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. He worked in
his own construction equipment store, where he discovered that
building materials were excessively priced. This inspired him to be
able to design a house that was almost half the price of a standard
house. Vazbuilt was the name given to his design. Depending on the
model, this house can be built in 14 to 30 days. Vazbuilt is as simple
to assemble as a Lego toy. It can also be disassembled and relocated
to a new location. Furthermore, according to Edgardo, Vazbuilt is
resistant to termites, earthquakes, fires, and storms. As a result,
Vazbuilt is ranked as one of the best corporations in the Philippines
(Top 1,000).
