Hints when using Experion HART I/O
• Introduction:
– The Experion C200 and C300 controllers both provide
HART enabled I/O in various flavours, be it C-series, PM
I/O or chassis format. The I/O and software multiplexer
of Experion allows one to take full advantage of HART
capability without adding any additional wiring.
– Not every facility will opt to install Foundation Fieldbus
(FF), so HART is a good and viable alternative to still get
the asset management functionality that is available with
FF.
– This paper will provide some hints and experiences from
a recent commissioning exercise.

Pre-commissioning Phase
• DD Files
Early on in the project make sure that you let your
instrumentation provider know that you want all your
devices to have the same revision level of the HART DD
files. Having the same revision level will make it easier to
manage your devices, and limits the amount of DD files that
your Experion Server needs to be aware of. Deleting of DD
files in the Experion Server is not possible, so you want to
limit how many files you import. This is not a performance
issue, but just a work flow issue.
As soon as your instruments arrive on site get an example
of each and hook it up to your system so you can get
familiar with how to manage your HART device and how to
interact with the Field Device Manager (FDM) system. This
will allow you to verify that you have the correct DD files
loaded in the DCS. The Experion system will let you know if
there is a mismatch.

Pre-commissioning Phase
• Experion License count
Make sure that your Honeywell sales representative
is aware that you are using HART, since it
consumes more license points. Each HART
transmitter and positioner will consume one license
count each. Therefore a typical loop having one
input and one output will consume 3 licenses
assuming all the blocks are in one CM. In the past
the Honeywell’s estimation configurator did not
automatically account for that when calculating the
recommended license count.
5. 5
Commissioning Phase
• Self Discovery
HART on Experion is self discovering. The Experion
system and FDM will automatically add devices to
their network as they are being wired into the
system. Kind of like adding a USB device onto your
computer.

Commissioning Phase
• Tricks of the Trade
– Valve stroking and positioner valve calibrations.
• Part of the commissioning effort is to verify a valve’s fail action and
that the valve strokes smoothly and its output matches what the
DCS is sending. At times valves will need recalibration, in the past
one would have to remove the cover from the positioner and press
the calibrate button. Now with FDM one can initiate this from the
FDM interface and safe considerable time.
– Valve verification of position versus output.
• Operations often will check behind the instrumentation crew to
verify that the valves do stroke to the right position when
commanded. With HART enabled output cards the DCS Operator
can verify the actual valve opening by viewing the positioner
feedback, a signal superimposed on the 4-20mA signal going to
the valve. An example of this capability is depicted on the next
slide.

Configuration verification
oExperion and HART provide some power tools to
help assure oneself that the range configured in the
transmitter is identical to range configured in the AI
input block. Any range or unit discrepancy will be
flagged and can be easily corrected either in the
DCS or with the use of FDM (FDM client integrates
so well that it actually is part of the DCS). The
actual transmitter ranges and the configured ranges
are visible from the detail display, somewhat similar
to the displays that STIM/DE users are used to.

Empty Flow Tube detection
• Detection of Empty flow tubes:
• HART like FF can provide alarms to alert the Operator that
a Magnetic Flow tube is empty, thus not capable of
detecting flow

Multivariable capability
oEach HART transmitter is capable of sending four variables,
and in some cases the end user can configure the variables
to be displayed. This capability is similar in many ways to
how the multivariable transmitter works in the Honeywell
STIM/DE environment. The update rate of the HART
variables are slower then the MV variables in DE mode, but
they are still very usable for monitoring and calculation
purposes.
o One practical application was done by extracting the temperature and density
from a mass flow meter and using these variables to do on-line calculations of a
NaOH concentration from a mass flow meter whose design purpose was only
flow measurement. All these variables are trendable and displayable on the
Experion operator interface.

FDM and Experion – Seamless Integration
oThe FDM and Control Builder interface have some similarity
from a hierarchal perspective. The diagnostics information
displayed is similar due to very fact that they both utilize the
same HART DD files.

Conclusion
oThe Experion integrated HART solution,
combined with the seamless integration of
FDM provided the commissioning team a way
of expediting the commissioning effort and
assuring a properly configured DCS and Field
Instruments.
