4. What is drugs?
Drugs are chemicals that change the way a person’s body works by altering
emotions and thoughts.
Drugs pass through the body and interferes with brain’s neurotransmitters.
Drugs have been part of our culture since the middle of last century.
5. Types of drugs
Pharmaceutical drugs:
These are chemicals that are designed to prevent, diagnose, treat, or cure a
disorder. In laymen terms, we simply call them medicines.
Eg: paracetamol, aspirin etc.
Recreational drugs:
These are chemical substances taken for enjoyment, or leisure purposes, rather
than for medical reasons.
they can lead to addiction, health and social problems and crime.
eg: alcohol, nicotine etc.

Drug abuse may be defined as the habitual use of drugs not needed for
therapeutic purposes, solely to alter one's mood, affect of state of consciousness,
or to affect a body function unnecessarily.
Continued use of drugs can lead to drug dependence, a state of physical & mental
dependence.

**The most commonly used illegal drug is MARIJUANA .According to the UN 2008
World Drug Report, about 3.9% of the world’s population between the ages of 15 and

12. Prevention and control
Send addicts to the rehab centres . Awareness and prevention must start at home.
Reduce supply and availability of drugs.
Reduce the scale of unemployment.
Avoid undue pressure : a child should not be pressed beyond his capacities, be it
studies, sports or any other thing .
Social service organisations and NGO’s should establish youth centres to overcome
the feelings of isolation, loneliness, anxiety etc.
Providing education and counselling .
Organising awareness campaigns on regular basis.
