2. PREVENTING AVLANCHES
Avalanche mortars are designed by engineers to trigger small avalanches before enough
snow builds up to cause a catastrophic avalanche.
The explosion shakes the snow loose from the slope, causing a small avalanche that will
cause much less damage than a large avalanche would.
3. DETECTING TSUNAMIS
Tsunami cannot be prevented, but if detected, then loss of life and property
damage can be minimized.
Special floating devices are setup faraway at sea to detect tsunami waves early.
Sensors placed in the bottom of ocean detect even small tsunami waves and the
information is sent to floating devices, then through floating devices the
information is sent to satellites and to tsunami centres.
This system is collectively known as DART (deep-ocean assessment and
reporting of tsunamis).
The main advantage is that coastal areas are given enough time to evacuate.

5. DETECTING EARTHQUAKES
The device used to detect earthquake is seismometer, its work is to plot a
seismograph by which the intensity of earthquake can be detected.
These seismometers use vibrations underground, they feel even small vibrations
that normal humans cant feel.
There are three methods of measurement
• Mercalli Scale
• Richter Scale
• Moment Magnitude Scale
Based on the requirement these three scales are used.
7. DETECTING TORNADOES
Doppler radar stations are created that are able to detect approaching
thunderstorms.
Doppler radar sends out pulses or radio waves, then measure how long it
takes the waves to bounce off objects (such as hail or rain) and return
This information can help scientists determine size of the storm, direction it’s
moving, and its severity.
Tornado spotters are also used to activate tornado warnings.
In this way even hurricanes can also be measured and their speed and wind
directions can also be measured.

9. MONITORING FLOODS
In India we can see that Floods occur often and due to structures the seviarity
is more and monitoring floods is very much important.
Floods are monitored with a water gauge.
A water gauge is a vertical post marked with water depths and placed in
rivers and streams that flood often.
If the water rises over a certain level on the gauge, near by communities may
be evacuated to prevent loss of lives.
Some advanced water gauges automatically relay information to local data
centers.
