At this week's Animal Health Investment Asia Forum, Tokyo, Ceva's Dr. Michael Hemprich went back to this original commitment by setting out why improved international cooperation is vital to tackling the emerging diseases threatening global protein supplies, citing the successful eradication of #Rinderpest as an example of how this could be achieved.

In October 2010, Marc Prikazsky committed
Ceva, the company he leads, to its new 10
year strategic vision:
With this vision Ceva aims to be more than
just an animal health company, but a One
Health company playing a vital role in
providing food and health to the global
human population.”
Together, beyond animal health

first classical swine fever
vaccine.

None of this is new!

4. Walls or even frontiers
cannot stop the major
challenges facing us.
Avian Flu

5. With new vector insert vaccines,
we have the technology to keep
pace and prevent outbreaks…
Cycle of mutation of the influenza virus seems
faster and more virulent than ever before …will public health & regulatory
legislation keep pace?

9. ASF brings unprecedented change
in global animal protein production.
The change in 2019 stands out in the global animal protein production record

10. Why the risks to global
health will be rising?
o The points of contact between human and
animal may therefore increase and give
diseases more frequent opportunity to
jump the barrier.
o Zoonotic disease hotspots are often tied to
backyard systems of livestock rearing…
most problematic when they are in close
proximity to intensive systems of meat
production.
o More foods are traded to more places in
ever more complex global supply chains, and
at the same time more people travel more
frequently to more places.
o Information travels faster and wider via
media networks also, thus spreading fear and
alarmist panic faster.

11. Ceva is moving closer
to its ambition of
an equally balanced
Bio/Pharma
portfolio
In 2010: 28% of sales in bio
In 2014: 33%
In 2019: 46%
From treating to
preventing.

12. More cooperation is possible.
The eradication of Rinderpest
has proved that.
12
The potential savings to
animal & human health run
into billions of $ or DALY’s
15. If it can be achieved
for Rinderpest why
not rabies free by
2030?
Thank you!

Editor's Notes
We used to believe the world was flat
Phylaxia formed 1912 - Classical Swine Fever IDT in 1922 to produce swine erysipelas vaccines. Stress point with current spread of ASF
…. but also also know that walls, national frontiers, sanitary cordons are no defence
against the global nature of the animal diseases we face:
Denmark’s planned 70 km fence along the German border to keep out not people but wild boars.
Advances and reduction in the cost of genomics means that “design a pet” - almost like
the Build a bear children’s toy stores could be just around the corner
