This is another part in a mini-series
on feelings. This month: negative
feelings.
If someone is “anxious”, they’re
nervous or worried about something.
“We’re fairly anxious about the situation as it
could really affect our business.”
AnxiousDisappointed
Defiant
JealousEnvious
If you’re “disgusted”, you
feel angry / offended about
something.
“I’m disgusted with the way they
treated us.”
Disgusted
If someone is
feeling “hurt”,
they’re feeling
sad because
someone has
done or said
something bad
to them.
“He was feeling
hurt because of the
way she’d treated
him.”
HurtFrightened / scaredUpset
If you’re “disappointed”, you’re sad
because something hasn’t happened
the way you wanted it to happen.
“I was really disappointed that my team
didn’t qualify for the final.”
Ashamed
If someone is “ashamed”, they feel
bad because they’ve done something
silly or bad and they’re worried what
other people will think.
“He was ashamed of the way he’d spoken to
them the night before.”
If someone
is “defiant”,
they won't do
what other
people want
them to do.
“He remained
defiant and
refused to
accept any
changes to the
plan.”
If someone is “depressed”, they’re
feeling very sad and bad and they
don’t want to do anything.
“He’s been depressed ever since his cat
died.”
If you’re “envious” of someone, you
want what they have. “Envious” and
“jealous” (see next entry) are often
used to mean the same thing: a feeling
of wanting what someone else has.
“I think you’re just envious of her success.”
If you’re feeling
“jealous”, you’re
worried that another
person might take
something from you.
It’s often used to
describe feelings in
relationships.
“Jenny felt jealous every
time Pete’s ex-girlfriend
spoke to him.”
If someone is “upset”, they’re
sad / angry / disappointed because
something bad has happened to
them.
“He was upset because they didn't invite
him to the party.”
If you’re
“frightened” or
“scared”, you
think that you’re
in danger,
or you’re
worried that
something
bad will
happen to
you.
“He's scared of
spiders.”
