THE CRISIS
Ghana, deemed a lower middle-income country in 2010, reached the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target for access to drinking water. However, serious challenges exist in terms of realizing improved access
to sanitation and hygiene. By the end of 2015, 78% and 14% of the population of over 27 Million had at least basic access to water and sanitation respectively. Nineteen per cent (19%) of Ghanaians practice open
defecation (OD) but the burden is more in the rural areas. Thirty-one per cent (31%) of the rural populace practice with only 9% having access to basic sanitation (JMP update, 2017). The lack of water, sanitation
and hygiene services impacts every aspect of a person’s life, women and young girls often feel the burnt as the spend hours walking for water and searching for a safe place to use ease themselves in the open, hours
which could be used carrying out other meaningful activties (attending school, developing livelihoods). School children also miss out on contact hours as they search for water and safe sanitation. Dishearteningly,
over 10,000 Ghanaian children die every year (UNICEF 2016) from diarrheal diseases due to unsafe water, poor hygiene and sanitation. At the rate of work Ghana is doing in addressing the sanitation challenges,
each household will not have decent toilet until the year 2483 .

Why WaterAid?
Over 6 million Ghanaians lack access to safe water and 18 million lack access to improved sanitation. The lack
of water and sanitation have negative effects on all aspects of life, social status, economic opportunities and
overall well-being. For women and girls, no access to sanitation means, less time spent in school, less time
developing or pursuing livelihood activities, no dignity, no privacy and no safety- they often wait until dark to find
a place to defecate. Universal access to water and sanitation will put an end to these practices and enable
women and young girls to play their rightful role in the development of Ghana.

Why a Fashion Collection?
All Rights Reserved
“As Charlotte Prive has grown in imagination and influence, it is of the utmost importance to us
that we use this influence to positively impact our community. WaterAid inspired us to follow
their lead in driving water and sanitation efforts, because every Ghanaian deserves access to
clean water and sanitation. An idea for a joint t-shirt quickly took flight into a full fashion
collection as we couldn’t stop asking what more we can do. We look forward to making “doing
good” as easy as picking up a new Charlotte Prive dress.” – Nana Kwame Adusei, Award-
Winning Creative Director of Charlotte Prive
