6. Why Artist-Entrepreneurs?
• Direct Access to Market - The Digital Opportunity
• Labels are signing later - from VC to Private Equity
• Trend in society to the empowered individual
• Sense of injustice leads to sense of responsibility
7. WHY?
• The recorded music industry suffers from 1960s architecture which is creaking
under the strain of new tech and business models
• Disparity of treatment of neighbouring rights in Europe has allowed the erosion
of protections for performers
• Artists were excluded from the debate in the early stages - in part because we
were not ready but also in part because it was extremely profitable not to have
to pay us
• One thing is clear: Artists need to be an active part of the search for solutions
8. KEY ISSUES
• European Copyright Reform - The ‘DSM’
• The YouTube Debate
• Streaming - Sale vs Broadcast
• New Business Models
• Best Practise for Artists in the Digital Age
• Genuine Artist Advocacy vs Tokenism
9. IAO SOLUTIONS FOR DSM
• Transparency - to ensure correct payments through the value chain
• Duty of Care from labels to artists - to ensure deals are done that
do not further undermine artists’ rights and cashflow
• Fair Share of Value - to ensure that artists receive an appropriate
share of the entire value generated by their work whether taken by
labels per stream, by advances or through equity stakes in platforms
• Remuneration Rights - properly protected and appropriately
transferred to new streaming environment taking account of exclusive
rights transferred by contract
10. THE YOUTUBE DEBATE
• At the moment, this is seen as Music vs Tech
• Both sides present simplistic and unreal arguments
• We must define a landscape that works for Artists
• We need DATA
11. Current campaign :
Artists in Europe, culture & commerce.
Any legal solution must deal with transparency, duty of care, a fair share of value and equitable
