2. In Service Training
• An in-service program is a professional training or
staff development effort, where professionals are
trained and discuss their work with others in their
peer group. It is a key component of continuing
medical education for physicians, Nurses,
pharmacists, and other medical professionals. It is
also known as on the job training.
3. In-service training of nurses
• In-service nursing education is a plan education
activities intended to build up on the educational and
experimental basis of the professional nurses for the
enhancement of practice education Administration and
Research fourth protocol development aimed at
improving the health of the public
4. Importance of In-service
training of nurses
On the job training is very important for all type of
workers especially for nurses. it is a key for better nursing
care. Health system is a complex system and concepts are
changed and updated very frequently. Therefore nurses
need to change and update their skill and knowledge in
order to provide better service.

8. Types of in-service education
Types may be based on time
Which include short time and long term
Short term training may be for one day , two day , three day …. 15 day
Long term training may be extended up to months or years as master’s
program in nursing.
Based on objective-
It may be orientation training, skill training, higher education training,
leadership and management training etc.
Based upon method it may be lecture, demonstration, symposium, workshop
and e-learning.
9. Lecture
A lecture word is taken from the French lecture, meaning reading, is
an oral intended to present information or teach people about a
particular subject, for example by a teacher. Lectures are used to
convey critical information, history, background, theories, and
equations. A politician's speech or even a businessman's sales
presentation may be similar in form to a lecture. Usually the
lecturer will stand at the front of audience in a room and recite
information relevant to the lecture's content.

Some advantages of lecturing include: quick exposure to new
material, greater teacher control in the classroom, an engaging
format, which may complement and clarify course material, and
facilitating large-class communication. Lecturing also permits the
dissemination of unpublished or not readily available material.
The lecture method can be made more effective when used with
suitable audio visual aids. Disadvantages of lecture include: placing
students in a passive role, encouraging one-way communication.
11. Demonstration
A demonstration is the process of teaching someone how to
make or do something in a step-by-step process. In
demonstration you show how and you “tell” what you are doing.
This method is used for skill training and is very effective.
Demonstrations are used frequently in the clinical setting, often
without advance preparation. Obviously, the more familiar the
demonstrator is with the equipment and the nursing procedure
being taught, the better the demonstration will be.
12. Advantage of Demonstration
• It has the advantage of using visual as well as oral
perceptions, thus facilitating learning. Other senses may
also be used, such as smell or touch. Although some
nursing procedures can be taught by simulation, others
are best taught with a patient; for example, tracheostomy
care or irrigation of a colostomy.
13. Symposium
- Symposium is a discussion method in which different view points on a
single aspect of a topic is discussed. Symposium is a series of speeches on
single aspect of a topic. Symposium provides a broad understanding of a
topic or problem
Symposium techniques has a series of speeches where two or more speakers
talk for 10-20 minutes, develop individual approaches or solutions to a
present aspects of a policy, process or programme.
At the end audience may ask questions. the chairman makes a summary of
the symposium.
14. Workshop
• The workshop method helps the instructor create
an environment in which the learner is more likely
to be involved and motivated. The workshop
method focuses on participatory, hands-on
practice and skill learning.

• A workshop is an informative or instructional class focused on
teaching specialized skills or exploring a particular subject.
Workshop presenters are usually educators, subject matter experts,
managers or other leaders who possess knowledge of a particular
subject or mastery of specific skills. Depending on the topic,
workshops may be only one or two hours in length or extend
across weeks of time

• eLearning is learning by utilizing electronic technologies to access
educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom. In most cases, it
refers to a course, program or degree delivered completely online. After
completeion of training a certificate is also issued.
• It is a very efficient way of delivering courses online. Due to its convenience
and flexibility, the resources are available from anywhere and at any time.
