Now celebrating ten years of exploring God's word together! We hope you get a lot out of our study! Today's study is found in Luke 16:19. The rich man had it all while Lazarus suffered. The situation reverses when the rich man goes to hell. What can we learn from this parable?

3. Lessons Learned
Welcome to our new series of bible lessons entitled, “Lessons Learned”. In this
series, we will attempt to share some important life lessons and biblical principles
that we should all live by. For our first lesson in this series, we will study a story in
the Bible about two men—one who is rich and the other who is poor. Solely for the
purposes of bringing our study to life, we will use a well-known rich man to
illustrate our points. Let us see what we can learn from the scriptural passage
about Lazarus and the rich man...
4. The Rich Man and Lazarus: A tale of two men...
Luke 16: 19-31
● The rich man had it all
● Lazarus suffered
● It doesn’t appear as though the rich man did anything to
help Lazarus
● Lazarus longed to eat what fell from the rich man’s table
● Even the dogs had pity on Lazarus and licked his sores
(but the rich man ignored Lazarus)
5. Lazarus is having trouble in his life
● Lazarus is in a bad situation and yet he sees an
unrighteous man prosper everyday.
○ Have you ever had that experience (where you saw
someone prosper who doesn’t have a strong
relationship with God?) How does it make you feel?
● Life Lesson: God does not want us to envy the ungodly
who prosper
○ Proverbs 23: 17-18
○ Psalms 37:1-2
6. After death, life really begins...
● Luke 16: 22-24
○ Death comes to Lazarus and the rich man
○ Death comes to all
○ The lifestyle of the rich man and the misfortune Lazarus endured mean
nothing now.
● Ecclesiastes 5: 15-16
○ You can take nothing that you attain in life with you when you die.
● There is a separation between the Godly and ungodly at death. The rich man
and Lazarus were separated at death
○ Matthew 25: 31-46
9. Luke 16: 29-31
Abraham replied, “They have
Moses and the Prophets, let
them listen to them”.
What does this mean for the loved
ones we have that we want to warn
about the dangers of ungodly living?
10. Abraham seems to be saying that each man (and
woman) is responsible for their own soul.
Everyone has God’s instructions for living and it’s
up to each individual to heed the warnings and
follow the instructions set forth in God’s Word.
11. What do you think are the
lessons that the Lord intended
for us to learn from
the parable of
The Rich Man and Lazarus?
12. Lessons Learned from
the Rich Man and Lazarus
• Love your neighbor as yourself
• We are judged according to how we treat other people
• After death, there will be a separation of the ungodly from the Godly
• Even if our lives are not ideal here on Earth, we can win in the end if heaven is our eternal home
• Worldly gain really is meaningless; especially if your walk with God isn’t what it should be
• Wicked men may prosper here on Earth, but it is our eternal lives that really matter
• Our lives should be guided by God’s Word and our loved ones have the same opportunity to seek God’s
Word while they are living

14. Luke 16: 19-21
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple

gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with
sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich
man’s table.Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

15. Luke 16: 25-26
25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus
received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us
and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor
can anyone cross over from there to us.’

16. Proverbs 23: 17-18
Saying 15
17 Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.
18 There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.

17. Psalms 37:1-2
Of David.
1 Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.

18. Luke 16: 22-24
22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to
Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades,
where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away,
with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have
pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and
cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

19. Ecclesiastes 5: 15-16
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb,
and as everyone comes, so they depart.
They take nothing from their toil
that they can carry in their hands.
16 This too is a grievous evil:
As everyone comes, so they depart,
and what do they gain,
since they toil for the wind?

20. Matthew 25: 31-46
The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the
nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the
sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the
kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I
was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you
clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you
something to drink?38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When
did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

21. Matthew 25: 31-46 (continued)
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of
mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared
for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave
me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not
clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or
sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for
me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
