M2014 s38 where the dead go 5 18-14 sermon

  1. 1. Where the Dead Go? Luke 16:19-31 Maud church of Christ by Jim Bradshaw Sunday Evening, May 18, 2014
  2. 2. Our Earthly Possessions Have No Bearing Luk 16:19-21 ESV "There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. (20) And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, (21) who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 1. Is this a parable? (Do not seem to fit; names names, and does not say it is) 2. Even if it is a parable do any parable tell things that are false?
  3. 3. Our Earthly Possessions Have No Bearing Mar 10:29-31 ESV Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, (30) who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. (31) But many who are first will be last, and the last first."
  4. 4. All Will One Day Die (The exception are those alive when Jesus returns) Luk 16:22-26 ESV The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, (23) and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. (24) And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.' (25) But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. (26) And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.'
  5. 5. All Will One Day Die (The exception are those alive when Jesus returns) 1. At death the godly are carried to Abraham’s side. 2. We are carried (escorted) by the angels. 3. Place is also referred to as Paradise. 4. Still a part of Hades. Luk 23:40-43 ESV But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? (41) And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." (42) And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." (43) And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
  6. 6. All Will One Day Die (The exception are those alive when Jesus returns) Act 2:25-32 ESV For David says concerning him, "'I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; (26) therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. (27) For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. (28) You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.' (29) "Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. (30) Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, (31) he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. (32) This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
  7. 7. All Will One Day Die (The exception are those alive when Jesus returns) 1. The ungodly go to a place of torment (Tartarus). 2. No angelic escort. 3. A fixed gulf (no one can cross). 4. Could see into Paradise. 5. Our destiny in Hades, reveals our eternal destiny.
  8. 8. No Going Back after Death Luk 16:27-31 ESV And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house-- (28) for I have five brothers--so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' (29) But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' (30) And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' (31) He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'" Read John 11:45-53
  9. 9. No Going Back after Death 2Co 5:10-11 ESV For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. (11) Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.
