5. Standard conditions
• All electrical voltage values are at “standard
conditions” 1M solutions, 25C, 1ATM
• What if you get a battery COLD? LESS VOLTS!
• What if you change the concentration of the
solutions in the battery? VOLTAGE CHANGES!
• How does the voltage change? Go up or
down???
6. ELECTRONS FLOWING ….
• How fast do electrons move through wire?
• NOT FAST!! Like 1 foot in 4-5 seconds.
• As one bumps into wire it just bumps one out the end
of the wire.
• What is an AMP?
• An amp is when you have 6.2E18 electrons move past a
point in one second.
• An easier name for this is one coulomb/second
• So… 1amp = 1 coulomb/second
• What’s a volt?
• A volt is the number of joules/coulomb
7. Memorize me
• 1 coulomb = 6.2E18 electrons/second
• 1 amp = 1 coulomb/second
• 1 amp = 6.2E18 electrons/second
• Amp x second = coulomb
• A mole of electrons is 6.02E23 electrons
• So… how many coulombs does it take until you have a
MOLE of electrons?
• 6.02E23/6.2E18 = 96,500
• 96,500 coulombs = 1 mole electrons
• That’s called the FARADAY constant.
• What is a VOLT? It’s a joule/coulomb
• Why is there only a table of REDUCTION POTENTIALS?
Where is the Oxidation Potential table????
