2. • The largest metropolis in the western extrimity of Anatolia. With a
population of 3,35 million, Izmir is the third most populous city in Turkey.
• The ancient was known as Smyrna, until the Turkish Postal Services Law of
1930 made “Izmir” the internationally recognized name. This modern name
derives from the first two syllables of the ancient name Smyrna
(pronounced as Smirnin)
• Izmir has 3,500 years of recorded urban history and even longer as an
advanced human settlement.
• During june and july the city hosts international art festivals, and the Izmir
International Fair is being held in the beginning of september every year.
• The economy of Izmir mainly consists from industry , trade and related
services, transportation, communication and agriculture. Izmir is the third
largest exporter after Istanbul and Bursa.

hot and dry summers; and mild to cool, rainy winters.
• The districts of Izmir are Balçova, Çiğli, Gaziemir, Karşıyaka, Konak,
Aliağa, Bayındır, Bergama, Beydağ, Bornova, Buca, Çeşme, Dikili, Foça,
Karaburun, Kemalpaşa, Kınık, Kiraz, Menderes, Menemen, Narlıbahçe,
Ödemiş, Seferihisar, Selçuk, Tire, Torbalı and Urla.
• Izmir is the country's largest port after Istanbul. It is located along the
outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea.
• Izmir yearly welcomes nearly 1,2 million foreign and nearly half a million
local tourists. Coastal tourism (beaches and yacht tourism), culture and
belief tourism (mainly Pergamon and Ephesus), congress tourism, winter
tourism (ödemiş-bozdağ ski centers), fair tourism, thermal tourism, nature
and sports tourism are the types of tourism in Izmır.
4. • There are a lot of places to visit in Izmır such as the clock tower at Konak
square, Tepekule (first settlement of ancient Smyrna), Pagos (Kadifecastle) ,
roman aquaducts built on the meles river (Şirinyer), Kızlarağası hanı
(Ottoman building in Kemeraltı), Hisar Mosque, the historical Kemeralti
neighborhood in Konak district, Havra steet (the street gets its name from
many Jewish synagogues (Havra in Turkish) built here), Beth Israel
Synagogue and Anglican Church in Alsancak, Elevator (Asansör ),
Alsancak and Karşıyaka districts, Izmir wildlife park, Ephesus ancient city,
Pergamon ancient city, Virgin Mary House in Ephesus, the Seven Sleepers
cave in Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the
Ancient World (represented only by one inconspicuous column), the library
of Celsus in Ephesus, Isa Bey Mosque, the Sanctuary of Asclepius in
pergamon and the lovely village Şirince.
• Izmir has a coastline of 629 km to the agean sea. The most popular beaches
preffered by its visitors are Selçuk-Pamucak, Urla, Gülbahçe, Çeşme-Ilıca,
Altınkum, Gümüldür, Özdere, Dikili, Çandarlı and Foça. The geographical
coasts of izmir shaped by creeks and islands makes water sports possible
besides the usage of the beaches.

• 6000 BC Neolithic and mid-Chalcolithic settlements in Bornova district
• 3000 BC Traces of settlement in Tepekule-Bayraklı
• 1200 BC Hellenic colonists begin to appear
• 1194 BC Trojan War, some warrior's wounds are healed in the thermal
springs in Balçova district of Izmir
• 688 BC Smyrna becomes the thirteenth city state of the Ionian League
• 333 BC Alexander the Great conquers Smyrna, and moves the city
• 190 BC Smyrna is transferred under Roman authority
• 395 Smyrna becomes part of the Eastern Roman Empire
• 1081 Caka Bey captures Izmir and establish the first Naval Force in
Turkish History
• 1919-22 Occupation of Izmir as of 15 May 1919, Greco-Turkish War
• 1922 Re-capture of Izmir by the Turkish army on 9 September 1922
