6. Introduction
The dairy sector of the country is one of the
principal agricultural industry. Since the basic
national objective is to provide inputs to farmers
at low cost and to reduce the income gap between
rich and the poor, the present Government is keen
to undertake Programmes in the light of the
objectives outlined. In the tune, it has been
recognized that some rural benefits are already
flowing to a group of co-operatively organized
small farmers through the Bangladesh Milk
producers’ Co-operative Union Limited (BMPCUL).6

Marketing
The Marketing Affair
The ever expanding city of Dhaka used to get 2.00 to 2.50 Lakh litres
of milk vita liquid milk per day which was only early 3000-4000 litres
the establishment of this project. This is hoped within the next couple
of years the organization will be able to market it’s capacity quantity
of 4.00 lakh litres per day alongwith substantial quantities of milk
products. The other milk products like Butter, Ghee, Ice-cream,
Flavoured Milk, Powder Milk, Condands Milk, UHT Milk etc. are on
regular supply in Dhaka as well as in some other cities. New avenues
of marketing with new products are also being explored to strengthen
the marketing operation.
The Milk Union has so far marketed 5.50 Core litres of liquid milk
worth Tk.250 core and substantial quantities of milk products worth
an amount of Tk. 70 core totaling an amount of Tk. 320 core.

Facilities
Milk Vita plays a very important role in the economic development of milk
producuing farmers through purchase of milk from them and assuring timely
payment. In the tune of these service the organization has started experimentation
on investment in the micro creadit sector. To facilitate purchase of cattle by poor
farmer members of the organization, loans are being sanctioned on easy term.
BMPCUL has invested so far an amount of about 10.00 core taka as loan is 5% seving
change and repayment of the installments are made through weekly deduction from
the milk bill to ease the financial pressure on the farmers. This has assured 100%
recovery of loans without any default.
The recovered loans are again `Recycled’ along with new additions to the fund
resulting in increase of the number of recipients each year. This credit facility has
made a commendable impact in the process of milk production and as such the
demands for the loans are increasing every from the poor farmers having no
capability of invesment for the cattle purchase.

Conclusion
Three overarching strategic objectives that would help expand the
dairying sector:
raising awareness among policy makers and consumers about the
nutritional benefits of local milk and dairy products;
increasing the number of smallholders involved in profitable milk
production and dairy value chains through diversification and better
integration of their household/farm businesses;
encouraging processors to set up smallholder milk procurement
systems to substitute imports and enhance national food security.
It is important that an inventory be undertaken of appropriate dairy
chain models, including their:
•competitiveness
•investment costs
•associated risks.
