Legendary Indian Playback Singer SP
Balasubrahmanyam Succumbs to
COVID-19 Aftermath!
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
The legendary playback singer and composer-actor-producer, SP Balasubrahmanyam has passed
away in a Chennai hospital on 25th September 2020, after a spirited ght against the COVID-19
disease. The singer-composer who dominated the lm industries of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh,
Kerala, Karnataka, and Mumbai (Bollywood) for over ve decades had tested positive on 5th
August 2020 and was in hospital since. Although the artiste was doing well in the initial stage
serious complications developed later and he was put on the ventilator and ECMO (Extra-
corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support. He did test COVID-19 negative on September 7,
2020, but as his breathing problems persisted, he continued to be on ventilator and ECMO
support. His condition became extremely critical in the last two days, and nally, the music
legend had to give in. He was 74.
Born into a Telugu family in Tamil Nadu in 1946 and raised mostly in Andhra Pradesh, SP
Balasubrahmanyam, better known as ‘SPB’ or ‘Balu’, showed his lively interest in music from an
early age, and over the years started singing in various local competitions winning prizes all the
time. He made his debut as a playback singer for a Telugu movie in 1966 where the music score
was done by his music mentor SP Kodandopani. Within days he made his Kannada playback
singing debut and forayed into the Tamil movies in 1969, and then to the Malayalam lm
industry in the same year. SPB’s illustrious and spectacular musical journey began: his becoming
the voice of the legendary actors of Southern India like Gemini Ganesan, MG Ramachandran
(MGR), NT Rama Rao (NTR), Shivaji Ganesan, and Kamal Hassan for whom he sang for Hindi
movies too, Rajnikant and then to the superheroes of Bollywood, from Salman Khan to Shahrukh
Khan.

Balasubrahmanyam achieved international fame by singing for the unforgettable Telugu movie
Sankarabharanam in 1980, directed by K Vishwanath. Balu was never trained in classical music,
particularly the Carnatic style; but yet, he made history by adapting his singing aesthetics to suit
the character of a classical music protagonist in the movie. SPB won his rst National Award as
the best male playback singer in this movie. The very next year, that is 1981, he took the Hindi
lm industry, Bollywood, by storm: singing lilting numbers for Kamal Hassan in the super-hit
movie ‘Ek Duuje Ke Liye‘, a remake of an original Telugu lm, for which he got his second National
Award as the best male playback singer in Hindi. And SPB became the most sought-after voice in
Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi language lms with music directors ranging from
the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, S Janaki, KV Mahadevan to AR Rahman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, RD
Burman, Ram-Laxman, Anand-Milind, and others.
In a career of over ve decades, SPB sang over 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages. He had won
6 National Awards for his playback singing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi; won 6 Filmfare
awards for the southern zone; he was conferred Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011;
he was honored with the ‘Indian Film Personality of the Year’ in 2016; and numerous other state
awards from his four southern states. For a personality of his stature, the list of national awards
seemed to be lesser in numbers which is largely due to the fact that the ‘national’ Hindi lm
industry or Bollywood enjoyed far greater reach, visibility, popularity, and patronage across the
nation, and therefore, many legendary greats of southern India had to remain content mostly
with state recognition.
SP Balasubrahmanyam is perhaps the only Indian playback singer to have enjoyed ve-decade-
long fame without a plateau with a fan following across India and the world irrespective of the
language barriers. His greatness was in his delightfully melodious yet manly voice, his immense
prowess of natural modulations, his intrinsic ability to play-act with the required emotions, and
his inborn talent to adapt his singing style as suits the characters/heroes of movies across ve
main and numerous other languages, like the legendary Mohammad Ra did so naturally from
the forties till his demise in 1980. Incidentally, Ra had been his model singer and a real guru
throughout his career, loving the Hindi lm-song icon always. Perhaps, for this reason, he thrived
in Bollywood for much longer than other southern-region singers like Yesudas and Vani Jayram.
Of course, he too did have hiatus of about 15 years from Bollywood, coming back only in 2013 to
sing for Shahrukh Khan in the super-hit movie Chennai Express. However, the great artiste kept
on singing-composing in southern languages till his last days.
We salute the great musician and mourn his tragic demise, with the whole nation as condolence
messages have been pouring in from lm personalities, politicians, leaders, stalwarts in all the
professional elds, and his millions of fans. Apart from his singing, Balu has always been loved

Hollywood Or Bollywood – Which is
Superior?
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
There was a time when a multi-stared lm with item numbers created a spark and did good
business at the box of ce. But at present, things are changing very fast and the Bollywood is
adopting western-style and techniques which is quite evident in some of the recent movies like
Kambakkht Ishq, Love Aaj Kal, and Blue, etc. Hollywood stars and celebrities such as
supermodels, pop singers, or famous actors, are entering the Bollywood lm industry. Though
critics may criticize Bollywood against Hollywood saying that the total earnings of Bollywood in
2006 were just half of the earnings that only one Hollywood studio, Walt Disney made in 2006.
But the fact is that Hollywood is mesmerized by Bollywood. Bollywood has a great deal to
present to Hollywood and similarly Hollywood also in uences Bollywood.
Which one is superior, Hollywood or Bollywood? The discussion is endless. Though Hollywood is
quite ahead of Bollywood in terms of revenue, Bollywood’s in uence in the world lm industry is
gaining new heights. Hollywood’s earnings do not depend on ticket sales only. It has adopted the
proven ‘franchise formula in which a big part of the revenue or income comes from other sources
such as TV networks, magazines, home videos, etc. No doubt, Bollywood is also considering this
aspect to promote its business. But revenue is not the only factor that one should take notice of,
there are other aspects also to be considered, such as story, music, song-and-dance sequences,
photography, technology, etc.

The main difference between Hollywood and Bollywood commercial movies is that song-and-
dance sequences are an essential feature of Indian lms. Professional play-back singers sing
songs that are lip-matched by movie characters played by actors and actresses. While there is no
such thing as song-and-dance in Hollywood. Therefore, they are attracted to Bollywood.
Bollywood lms are a good source of entertainment presenting anything and everything, quite
like a Santa Claus gift bag, whereas Hollywood lms focus more on cinematic knowledge.
But, things are changing very fast these days. A time may come when there would be no
difference between Bollywood and Hollywood. Particularly after the success achieved by ‘Slum-
dog Millionaire’, can we expect more movies where Bollywood come together with Hollywood? In
the coming times, you will see Barbara Mori paired with Hrithik Roshan in an Indian lm ‘Kites’,
and likewise, an Indian actor Anupam Kher will act in Hollywood’s top director Woody Allen lm.
After winning Oscar awards for the Indian lm Slumdog Millionaire, the difference between
Bollywood and Hollywood has reduced and it is becoming a joint venture. Maybe, one day we see
Sylvester Stallone dancing around trees in an Indian lm and Hrithik Roshan playing James Bond
in a Hollywood lm.

Poll: Most Romantic Bollywood Song
Ever – RESULT!
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Yes, our month-long journey to nd out the most romantic track ever produced in Bollywood has
come to an end. The journey was an exciting one considering as many people reacted positively
to the poll; You have got no idea, even Shahid mentioned our poll on Twitter!!
Also, the complaints were minimal over the selection of the songs. We have started the poll with
20 songs and later we added 5 more songs to the list.
Bollywood has been known for romance; right from the very start as if Indians could never live
without romance in their lives. From black and white to the modern era we have seen many
talented musicians, directors, and actors bring the essence of romance in a 5 minutes long song.
Sometimes it was about passion, sometimes about the purity of emotion, sometimes about
dreams, and some other times about poignancy.
We thank all those who have voted for the songs on the list, and we also thank our critical
friends(Bobby Singh, Smitha, Nisha, Sourabh & Aravind) who have helped us to compile the
critic’s top 10.
We have two lists, one critic list, and another popular list, both having top 10 songs. Let’s see the
critic’s top 10 rst, and then we’ll see the popular top 10.
CRITICS TOP 10
10) Do Dil Mil Rahe Hai: Pardes
Credits(Music: Nadeem-Shravan, Lyrics: Anand Bakshi, Singer: Kumar Sanu)
Subhash Ghai lms always had great music, right from start and Pardes is truly a great musical.
The irony is that despite being a romantic hero Shahrukh Khan doesn’t get romantically involved
with Ganga, the central character played by Mahima Choudhari. He comes to her house with his
friend’s proposal for her. Of course, nally, he gets the girl (which is obvious, isn’t it?) but there
doesn’t have much of a romantic angle.

So, how come this song featured on this list? Well, the music and lyrics are extremely romantic.
Shahrukh sings in the background with a guitar in his hand, while Mahima Choudhari and
Apoorva Agnihotri look into each other’s eyes.
This slow-paced romantic number can de nitely move your heart.
9) Abhi na jao chhod kar: Hum Dono
Credits(Music: Jaidev Verma, Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi, Singers: Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Ra )
“Hum Dono” is a 1961 Hindi lm produced by Dev Anand and Navketan lms. Written by Vijay
Anand, the lm is directed by Amarjeet. The lm stars Dev Anand in a double role and also has
Nanda, Sadhana, and Leela Chitnis. The lm has a super hit song “Main Zindagi ka saath nibhata
chala gaya” by Mohd Ra ……
Legendary singers Mohammad Ra and Asha Bhonsle are at their romantic best in this song. The
song is conceived like a conversation between the hero and heroine, and the hero says
Abhi Na jaayo chhodh kar (Please don’t leave yet)
ke dil abhi bhara nahi (’cause my heart isn’t satiated yet)
Andshe replies
Agar main ruk gayi abhi (If I stay back now)
to jaa naa paoungi kabhi(I shall never be able to go)
yahi kahoge tum sada(‘Cause you will always say)
ke dil abhi nahi bhara(“My heart is not statiated yet.”)
jo khatam ho kisi jageh(This is not a matter)
yeh aisa silsila nahi(That will end so easily,)
Do I need to say more to prove how beautiful this song is?
8. Ahsaan tera hoga mujh par: Junglee
(Music: Shankar-Jai Kishan, Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri, Singers: Mohammad Ra & Lata Mangeshkar)

localhost/wordpress/?format=pdf&post-type=post&order-date=asc&order-menu=asc&statuses%5B%5D=publish&dates%5Bafter%5D=&dates%5Bbe… 8/67
“Junglee” is a 1961 Indian movie produced and directed by Subodh Mukherjee. Junglee means
“Wild” or “ill-mannered” in Urdu & Hindi. The lm stars Shammi Kapoor, Lalita Pawar, Shashikala,
and Asit Sen. Saira Banu, in her debut lm, earned a Filmfare nomination as Best Actress and
became a star.
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par(You would be doing me a great favor)
Dil chahta hai woh kehne do(If you let me tell you what my heart desires)
Mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi(I have fallen in love with you)
Mujhe palkon ki chaaon mein rehne do( Please let me dwell in the shelter of your eyes)
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par…( You would be doing me a great favor…)
I must say one of the very well-written romantic songs, excellent poetry.
7. Main Yahaan Hoon: Veer Zaara
Credit(Music: Madan Mohan, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Singer: Udit Narayan)
This is the only song in the whole world that could send chills down my spine when I listen to it.
There is something extremely mysterious and passionate about this song.
The song starts with Udit Naayan whispering Jaanam Dekh Lo… Much like the heroine Preity
Zinta, we look around for Shahrukh Khan singing these lines with so much passion in his eyes
“Main Yahaan Hoon Yahaan..”
I would say one of the most magical love songs ever. There is magic, there is a mystery, there is
passion, there is assurance and there is love.
I especially love that the Punjabi folklore song “Mera Long Ga Vaacha” instrumental portion
comes right after mukhda, which immensely enhances the beauty of the song.
I would say Udit Narayan’s best rendition ever. Can anybody else match the way he pronounces
Jaanam?
6. Tum Paas Aaye: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Credit (Music: Jatin-Lalit, Lyrics: Sameer, Singers: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik)
9. 18/04/2021 Bollywood Singers
localhost/wordpress/?format=pdf&post-type=post&order-date=asc&order-menu=asc&statuses%5B%5D=publish&dates%5Bafter%5D=&dates%5Bbe… 9/67
Probably Jatin-Lalit is the most repeated music director on this list; it says how much their music
represented romance. When the golden pair Shahrukh Khan and Kajol is associated with this
movie the music has to be irresistibly romantic and the Jatin-Lalit-Sameer team delivered just
that.
Alka Yagnik is in top form throughout this album; undoubtedly her voice was best used in this
album.
Kya Karoon Haye Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, yes what else to do, these lines left an entire generation
helplessly romantic.
5. Kuchh Na Kaho: 1942 A Love Story
Credits (Music: R.D Burman, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Singer: Lata Mangeshkar and, Kumar Sanu)
R.D Burman is undoubtedly Bollywood’s most cherished composer. He once said that he created
the tune of Kuchch Naa Kaho for a bhajan, and later used it for the lm. Is that what attributed to
the purity of the song? The quality of the lyrics is tremendous; Javed Akhtar has always been a
great poet and lyricist besides being a great script-writer. 1942 A Love Story was a period lm set
in the pre-independent era. Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala added the poise required for such a
song.
The lm was highly acclaimed for its music, songs, picturization, cinematography, and lyrics.
Rahul Dev Burman got a posthumous-best music director Filmfare award for this lm.
4. Tere mere Sapne: Guide
Credits(Music: SD. Burman, Lyrics: Shailendra, Singer: Mohammad Ra )
The guide is a landmark lm in the history of Bollywood lms. It has achieved the classic title
over the years. Musically, this lm is considered to be one of the best albums ever produced in
Bollywood as industry insiders (singers, lyricists, music directors, etc) voted this movie as
musically the best Hindi movie of all times.
In this song, the hero assures his undying love for the heroine. The hero and heroine are not
exactly in a position to enjoy the lighter moments of love as both are bound by hardships.
Therefore, this song is more about hope.
Shailendra expressed all these complexities in simple yet powerful words. “Din dhal jaaye haaye
raat na jaaye” is another great romantic track from the same movie. No matter what, Guide will

remain one of the biggest musical accomplishments of all time.
3. Pehla Nasha: Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
Credit(Music: Jatin-Lalit, Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Singers: Udit Narayan & Sadhana Sargam)
Well, for years I’ve been fascinated by the imagery of Aamir Khan jumping off a rock in slow
motion singing Pehla Nasha Pehla Kumar….. The heroine as well sings and dances in slow motion
as if she’s on top of the world. Yeah, I love that ‘top of the world’ thing about this song.
A handsome Aamir Khan and Ayesha Jhulka made this song immensely watchable. Udit Narayan,
one of the most romantic male voices, and Sadhana Sargam, a hugely talented but sidelined
singer take this song into immense joy.
There is happiness and zeal all over it; you too want to dance in slow motion. Yes, Pehla Nasha
could be so sweet.
2. Chaudhvin ka chand: Chaudhvin ka chand
Credits(Music: Ravi, Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni, Singer: Mohammad Ra )
This Guru Dutt song remains one of the greatest romantic tracks ever. Guru Dutt is Bollywood’s
most cherished and respected lmmakers. Lyrics written by Shakeel have ingenious poetic touch.
Look at the opening lines.
Chaudhvin ka chand ho, ya aaftaab ho (Whether it is the moon that comes every fourteen days (full
moon) or the sun)
Jo bhi ho tum Khuda ki kasam, laajawab ho(Whatever you are, I swear to God, you are beyond
compare!)
A beautiful Waheeda Rahman sleeps before Guru Dutt and he compares her pristine face with the
moon. This could be Mohamad Ra ’s most romantic track ever; he’s romantic and expressive by
default, and here he’s superlative form.
Poets have always described female beauty; they have used all sorts of imagery to describe the
unfathomable beauty of the female form. In Bollywood, this song remains the master of all such
songs. After all which woman wouldn’t want to be compared to Chaudhvin ka chand?
1. Kabhi Kabhie Mere: Kabhi Kabhie
11. 18/04/2021 Bollywood Singers
localhost/wordpress/?format=pdf&post-type=post&order-date=asc&order-menu=asc&statuses%5B%5D=publish&dates%5Bafter%5D=&dates%5Bb… 11/67
Credits(Music: Khayyam, Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi, Singers: Mukesh& Lata Mangeshkar)
Yash Chopra could sell romance like no other; he was this man who knew everything about the
human heart and its dilemmas. In the lm, a beautiful Rakhi sings Kabhi Kabhie on her rst night.
The music was magical, so were the lyrics. For the same reason, both got Filmfare awards.
Mukesh too got the best male playback singer Filmfare award.
There is this heartfelt love and the pain of losing your love in this song.
“Ki jaise bajti hain shehnaaiyaan si raahon mein…” and the Shenaayi bit following right after this
line is heart-wrenching.
Everyone associated with this song is immortalized, it lives in our hearts, forever.
POPULAR TOP 10
10) Kuchh Na Kaho: 1942 A Love Story
Kuchch Naa Kaho has already been featured on our ‘critics top 10’ list. See #5.
9) Pehli Nazar Main: Race (#25 on critics list)
Credits (Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Sameer, Singer: Atif Aslam)
The race wasn’t a milestone romantic lm, but this song really generated a huge buzz. I would
give most of the credit to Atif Aslam, after the era of Sonu Nigam & Udit Narayan, Atif Aslam and
Mohit Chouhan took the music industry by storm when it comes to romantic numbers. Both sing
from the heart and it never fails to touch you; as both specialize in romantic numbers. Baby, I
Love You…. bit in the song is extremely pleasing to the senses. Pritam might be getting ak for
copying a Korean song here, but I would say, nice job done excellent rework.
8 ) Tumhi Dekho Naa: Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (#13 on critics list)
Credits(Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Singer: Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik)
I would say the most tender love song for a long time. There is hardly any singing; Sonu and Alka
rather whisper the words. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is the most happening composer at the moment,
and their ability to mix Indian classical music with western elements is impeccable.

King of Romance Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee sings this love duet in the beautiful locales
of Newyork city. I wouldn’t say Karan Johar shot the song justifying the beauty of the song,
nevertheless the best love ballad you can hear when you are all alone.
I especially love the ute bit before the second Antara(versa), you could melt forever listening to
that; a true classic touch.
7) Kabhi Kabhie Mere: Kabhie Kabhie
Kabhi Kabhie Mere has already been featured on our ‘critics top 10’ list. See #1.
6) Na tum jano na hum: kaho na pyar hai (#17 on critics list)
Credits (Music: Rajesh Roshan, Lyrics: Ibrahim Ashk, Singers: Lucky Ali, Ramya)
Hrithik Roshan entered Bollywood like a storm. Kaho Naa Pyar Hai was the biggest hit of that
year and a dream debut in every sense. He became a superstar with just one movie.
Rakesh Roshan’s movies always had great music, Kaho Naa Pyar Hai was no different since
Hrithik’s uncle Rajesh Roshan came up with some of the best tunes for Hrithik. Naa Tum Jaano Na
hum has a breezy quality about it. There is something dreamy and western about the whole
arrangement of the song. Lucky Ali may not be known as the best singer around, but his ability to
sing romantic numbers is highly appreciated.
This song would have sounded a lot different and less impactful if a regular voice had sung it.
That different tone adds to the charm of this irresistibly romantic number.
5)Pehla Nasha: Jo Jeeta Wohi Sinkandar
Pehla Nasha has already been featured on our ‘critics top 10’ list. See #3.

localhost/wordpress/?format=pdf&post-type=post&order-date=asc&order-menu=asc&statuses%5B%5D=publish&dates%5Bafter%5D=&dates%5Bb… 13/67
Credit(Music: Jatin-Lalit, Lyrics: Anand Bakshi, Singers: Lata Mangeshkar & Kumar Sanu)
This is the quintessential love song to which no Bollywood fan requires an introduction.
Shahrukh Khan and Kajol became a golden pair with Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge which ran for
years setting so many box of ce records. The image of Raj and Simran in a close embrace
became the symbol of love. They rede ned the chemistry shared by two lovers.
Jatin-Lalit, once again on this list; probably making them the most romantic composers :), and
Anand Bakshi, a Yash Chopra regular wrote the beautiful lyrics and he rightfully won the best
lyricist Filmfare award that year.
1) Tum Se Hi: Jab We Met (#11 on critics list)
Credits(Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Irshad Kamil, Singer: Mohit Chouhan)
Jab We Met could be the modern-day Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, as Imtiaz Ali incorporated
the changing urban lifestyles in a love story otherwise deeply rooted in Yash Chopra, Karan Johar
mold. Interestingly, Hero falls in love with the heroines towards the interval portion; but the
heroine took time till the climax to realize that she’s in love too.
So, this song comes before the interval where the hero realizes his love for her. He sees that she
changed his life forever, and he sees her in everything he does. I would say beautiful lyrics.
baaton mein baatein, teri… (even my talks are full of you…)
raatein saugaatein, teri… (my nights seem to be a gift from you…)
kyun tera sab ye, ho gaya… (why has my everything turned yours…)
hua kya… (don’t know what happened…)
Mohit Chouhan is awesome in this song. He imparts so much feeling into the song. The gentle
ow of the song reminds us of rain and Shahid & Kareena dance in the rain towards the end of
the song; perfect way to end our list:).
Once again thank you all for helping us to compile this list. Wait for the next poll:)

Old Hindi Songs Continue To Remain
Popular With Music Connoisseurs
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Listening to the latest Hindi songs can be a fun experience. However, there is no doubt that Old
Hindi songs have retained their charm and popularity despite the developments in instruments
and music composition. Let us take a look at some reasons why songs from the 1960s to the
1990s continue to remain popular even today.
Great Lyrics
While it would be incorrect to say that all modern songs have meaningless lyrics, there is no
denying that composers and lmmakers attached a lot of importance to the lyrics of songs in
Hindi movies in the past. Songs like “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon” became popular not just for the
voices of the singers but also for meaningful and graceful lyrics. Composers like Naushad and SD
Burman worked with lyricists like Kai Azmi, Anand Bakshi, and Sahir Ludhianvi to create
evergreen songs. Not surprisingly, songs from the 60s continue to remain the most popular old
Hindi songs amongst web surfers today.
Great Singers
Old Hindi songs continue to remain very popular because of singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha
Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, and Mohammad Ra . Each
single had a distinctive style and fan following. Each and every famous singer of the 60s has left
an indelible impact on the Hindi lm industry. Even modern singers like Kumar Sanu and Sonu
Nigam have acknowledged that they have simply tried to emulate the singing styles of the giants
of the industry. Listen to old Hindi songs and chances are high that you will hear melodious
voices and soulful tunes that cannot be found in the newly released songs.
Soul-Stirring Music
The music composition industry underwent a transformation after the independence of the
country. When the 50s was the decade of simple and soulful music, music composers became
more adventurous in the 60s and the 70s. The 80s saw widespread experimentation while the
90s marked a signi cant transition period with the introduction of cable TV and the advent of the

Indian pop music industry. Great old Hindi songs continue to remain popular irrespective of the
decade in which it was made.
Great Songs For Different Moods
Old Hindi songs offer a lot of choices. If you like sad songs, then songs made for tragic situations
from the 60s to the 90s will help you enjoy the melancholic and sober tunes. If you like fast and
peppy members, then you just have to listen to popular songs sung by Kishore Kumar in the 60s
and 70s. If you like romantic numbers, then just check out melodious songs sung by the likes of
Mohammad Ra and Mahendra Kapoor.
Carrying your favorite collection of old songs on your MP3 player is not necessary anymore as
you can just love it on the Internet and check out your favorite old songs online. You can listen to
the songs for free on the Internet. You can create your own playlists and access them whenever
and wherever you want. This will help you enjoy your favorite old Hindi songs even when you are
on the move.

Sukhwinder Singh: The Singing Legend
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Born and brought up in Amritsar, Punjab, the renowned Bollywood playback singer, Sukhwinder
Singh, rose to international fame with this song “Jai Ho” from the lm ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ in
the year 2008. Also popularly known as Sukhi amongst his admirers, the singing sensation has
not only limited his talent to singing, but has also achieved success as a music composer, director
& lyricist, and lately as an actor. Although he was aspired to become a sportsperson from his
early childhood, singing happened to him by chance. Since he got a break in the Hindi lm
industry in the year 1986, there was no looking back for him. To date, he has lent his
mesmerizing voice in more than a hundred Bollywood movies along with other regional lms
and albums. Sukhi has not only surpassed his talent in the Hindi lm industry, but he has a huge
fan following in Punjabi as well as in Tamil.
Journey of his musical career:
• Learning Music- The multi-talented Sukhwinder kick-started his career at a very tender age of 8
years by signing a melodious number from the movie ‘Abhinetri’ sang by the legendry singer, Lata
Mangeskar during a stage performance. His profound love for music grew with each passing day
and learned music under the guidance of the popular Bollywood music composer duo, Laxmikant
Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (popularly known as Laxmikant-Pyarelal).
He also released his rst Punjabi music album, titled: ‘Munda Southhall Da’ marketed by T-Series,
prior to joining the troupe of the musicians.
This music album was a turning point in his music career as it helped him to achieve an award,
and decided to pursue music as his profession.
• Struggle towards achieving success- Before getting a singing break in the Hindi movie, ‘Karma’,
this Punjabi-born singer struggled hard to attain a position in the tinsel-town. He worked as a
music arranger for the Laxmikant-Pyarelal group. Although his performance in ‘Karma’ remained
unnoticed by the listeners, very soon he got another opportunity to prove his talent by singing in
Madhuri Dixit starrer, ‘Khilaaf’. Even though the song, “Aaja Sanam” was a hit, yet the singer
remained unheard. Once again he did not lose hope and went abroad to gain a deeper
understanding of different genres of music. In the meanwhile, he also acted in a Tamil lm
called, ‘Ralshakudu’.

• Skyrocketing Achievements- After a considerable hiatus from the world of Indian music,
Sukhwinder returned with a big bang after the success of the iconic number “Chal Chhaiyya
Chhaiyya” from the Mani Ratnam directed the lm- ‘Dil Se’ in 1998. It was his self-con dence and
faith that kept him going even during the odd days of his singing career and got him the
prestigious Filmfare Award for best playback male singer in the year 1999. Since then, the ace
singer witnessed an upswing in his profession and managed to grab the best playback male
singer Filmfare Award once again in the year 2009, for the Shah Rukh Khan starrer song, “Haule
Haule” from the movie ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. Other chartbuster songs that Sukhi has in his credit
include, “Huh Hud Dabang” (Dabang), the title song of ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’, “Lootnewale”
( Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola), “Anarkali Disco Chali” (Housefull 2), “Banjara Banjara” (Ek Tha
Tiger), “Tere Bin Sukha Sukha Saawan”(Kahani), the title song of ‘Chak De India’ and many more.
Other cinemas in which he lent his eloquent voice include Bol Bachchan, Taal, 1947 Earth, Jhoom
Barabar Jhoom, Om Shanti Om, Kurbaan, Ishqiya, Omkara, Billu Barbar, Dillagi, Zubeidaa, Fashion,
Garam Masala, Luck, Kisna, Tere Naam, Kaminey, Black & White, Biwi No.1, The Legend of Bhagat
Singh, Kuch Kariye, Chance Pe Dance, Ravan, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Chalte Chalte, Tashaan, Paheli,
Lagaan and others.
From Su music to Thumri and Rock, Sukhwinder has excelled in all the genres and has a huge
fan following in India and abroad. His surging voice went international with the success of “Jai
Ho”. He also sang an authentic Indian song for Steven Spielberg’s movie. Even his famous song,
“Chal Chhaiyya Chhaiyya” was used in 2006 in another Denzel Washington starred picture, ‘Inside
Man’.
Association with the maestro A.R Rahman:
A hardcore admirer of Mexican music and culture, Sukhwinder owes his success to the music
maestro A.R Rahman. The duo has created magic not only in the Indian music industry but has
set the stage on re even in foreign lands. No doubt, it was a Rahman composer, which helped
Sukhi to re-establish himself in the industry. After the immense success of “Chaiyan Chaiyan”,
both of them worked closely with each other and created a number of Blockbuster compositions
like: “Ramta Jogi” & “Ishq Bina” from Taal; ” Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire; “Chinamma
Chinkumma” ( Tamil-Meenaxi); “Aaj Dil Gustakh” (Blue), “Ruth Aa Gayee Re”, “Yeh Jo Zindagi Hain”
(1947-The Earth); “Thok De Killi” (Raavan ); “Pagdi sambhaal jatta” (The Legend of Bhagat Singh);
“Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai” from Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na; “Aayo Re Sakhi”, “Piya Ho” and “Bhangari
Morori” (Water), etc.
Whenever Rahman had to create any musical masterpiece, he mostly likes to approach
Sukhwinder to create the magical aura. Rahman being an excellent music composer, arranger,

sound editor, and sound engineer, always believes that a good piece of art can be created only
through experiment. Hence, a multi-talented artist like Sukhi has always remained his rst
choice. However, the duo plans to take music to a higher level, where they can express
themselves instead of con ning their talent within the framework of Indian Cinema.
Apart from his association with the living legend, Sukhi has also bonded himself with music
director Sandeep Chowta, with whom he wishes to establish a high-tech recording studio in
Mumbai.
Sukhwinder Singh as an Actor:
Although never thought to take up acting as a career, acting happened to him by chance. It was
during the recording of the songs of the movie ‘Kuch Kariye’ (2010), when the director, Jagbir
Dahiya approached Sukhi to play the lead role. Seeing him recording with expressions and
feelings, which was a pre-requisite for the lead role ‘Rishi’, the director offered him the proposal.
Although reluctant at the beginning, the singer gave his consent after going through the script.
In the movie too he plays the role of a musician, who comes from a relatively small town to
Mumbai in order to pursue his music career.
Although the movie did not work out in the box of ce, yet the director is keen to re-launch it
once more with a few changes. However, for Sukhwinder, music is his rst love, and it will never
take the backseat for the sake of acting.
Conclusion:
Like most singers, Sukhwinder too enjoys experimenting with music. From high noted “Anarkali
Disco Chali” to the Su mix “Dum Dum”, he can sing all. Lately, he also recorded a motivational
song to encourage the Indian athletes during the London Olympics 2012. Featuring superstars
like Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan, the song ” Is Baar Tiranga London Mein Phehraiga”
composed by Salim Sulaiman succeeded in creating the right effect, and as a result, India came
out with ying colors by winning six medals. Another song ”Chak De India” too became the
National sports anthem of the country containing the eloquent voice of the star singer. He also
sang for various sports like hockey and Kabaddi, where India celebrated its victory.

India’s Art and Architecture
16 April 2021

India is the destination of people the world over for its varied cultural heritage with special
interests in its art, architecture, and entertainment.
From the caves of Kujraho to the magni cent Taj, Indian architecture has always been eyed and
greatly appreciated. Indian art has been depicted in such profound architecture. The symmetry in
the architecture at the Taj Mahal or the appreciation of the recently built Akshardham Temple has
attracted the attention of all across the world.
Today, the visitors are not only concentrated on the long-ago built structures. Indian art is also
depicted in the modernization of society. It can also be called adopting westernization for the
good! The buildings of enterprises, malls, shopping centers, metro rail also attract a lot of tourist
attention.
As the years pass, India’s outlook on art has changed. There are shows of Indian performers
outside India as well. Indian singers, classical and folk performers, and painters are a great
demand of the west.
Indian cultural dresses are also hitting the foreign markets. Gone are the times when Indian
traditions were restricted to Indian market places!
Foreign designers are adopting Indian styles into their designer wear. Indian designers have also
formed a niche for themselves in the international fashion market. Indian designers also
showcase their talent in the international fashion week and such programs of great acclaim.
India has already made a mark in the world business but still has a long way to go!!
Apart from a varied variety of things India is famous for, entertainment and precisely Bollywood,
has gathered a lot of international acclaims lately. Movie stars are being invited into Hollywood
movies, international game shows, international award ceremonies, etc.
Indian movies, nowadays have different screenings for the countrymen and abroad. With the
trend of cross-over movies, Bollywood has gained more recognition because such movies are not
only made in English, for a wider audience but also cater to intellectually strong subjects. This
doesn’t mean that the essence of Indian movies has lost to such artful movies. Indian movies are

liked for their storylines and songs. Indian movies are also being shortlisted for the Oscars, which
are the most prestigious international awards.
Not only Bollywood movies but also regional movies have come of age. Recently there is a buzz
that Spiderman- the movie would be made in Bhojpuri.
This infers a handshake of India and the world. Not only is the world accepting Indian movies
with open arms, but Indians too are ready to accept the international movies with their format of
lesser duration and no songs as compared to typical Indian movies.

Bhojpuri Songs in India Today
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Music from Bihar is more popular than ever before. There was a time when music from Bihar was
non-existent. Bhojpuri songs have in the last few years been popularised thanks to the Indian
lm industry popularly known as Bollywood. Bhojpuri is a language spoken not only in the states
of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh but also in regions of Nepal, Mauritius, and also parts of the
Caribbean. It was considered as a language of the villages and spoken by the poor people. But in
recent years, the people of Bihar are shedding the downtrodden feel of Bhojpuri and adopting
the language as their very own. Speaking this language is no longer considered backward.
Hindi movies have introduced Bhojpuri item songs like “Munni badnam hui” and “Mai aai hu UP
Bihar lootne”. This has made the movies attractive to the masses of the Bhojpuri regions. In
addition, it does spice up the lm and attracts many people just to watch the videos.
Interestingly these videos do attract large crowds and hence act as crowd pullers as far as Hindi
movies are concerned. Hence more Hindi movie directors and producers are considering adding a
Bhojpuri song in the lms similar to adding a Bhangra (Punjabi song) to make it more attractive.
Many Bhojpuri singers are too taking up singing Bhojpuri songs for Hindi movies as compared to
just singing for albums. Bhojpuri Playback Singers include; Manoj Tiwari, Dinesh lal
Yadav’nirahua’, Bharat Sharma, Pawan Singh, Radhe Shyam, Udit Narayan, Sharada Sinha, Manoj
Tiwari, Kalpana Patowary, Guddu Rangeela, and many other rising stars from the Bhojpuri world.
Out of these singers, Manoj Tiwari and Sharda Sinha are the most famous. Single-handed they
have taken the Bhojpuri language and propelled it to great heights. Kalpana Patowary another
Bhojpuri singer, although being from the state of Assam she has taken up singing Bhojpuri songs
and has excelled in it. She is so famous in Bihar for music that she is considered the queen of
Bhojpuri music. Singing in Bhojpuri is no longer taboo.
Although Bhojpuri songs are not freely available on the internet as compared to Hindi songs,
nonetheless, they can be easily found on the streets of Bihar. It’s very dif cult to miss Bhojpuri
songs and music especially on the streets of small towns in Bihar such as Muzaffarpur or
Jehanabad. Bhojpuri music can still be bought on Amazon online store. Other places to buy
Bhojpuri mp3’s include eBay and auction stores, however, availability is rather limited. Hence the
best place to buy these songs is by visiting Bihar, the source of everything Bhojpuri.

Sufi Music: The Call of Qawwali for
Prayer and Ecstasy
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
“Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened,” wrote the great Su mystic
Jalaluddin Rumi, “Don’t open the door to the study and begin reading. Instead, take down a
musical instrument. Let the beauty we love be what we do.”
The Su s believe in celebrating by singing and dancing. Thus music takes the centre stage as it
comes very close to meditation, as underlined by Osho. In North India, Su Masters like Bulle
Shah, Baba Farid, and Shahbaz Kalandar wrote ecstatic poetry that has become popular as Su
and folk music today especially in the form of Qawwali.
Qawwali is a vibrant musical tradition that stretches back more than 700 years. Originally
performed mainly at Su shrines throughout the subcontinent, it has also gained mainstream
popularity. A lead singer has a group of supporters who sing along and clap with the
accompaniment of other musicians. The artists and the listeners are often transported into a
state of ‘wajad’ where they feel intoxicated with the presence of God. The late Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan is considered the uncrowned emperor of Qawwali.
‘Mast Kalandar‘ the qawwali of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Kalandar is perhaps the most famous and
most popular of these. Considered as ‘the national anthem’ for qawwalis, it is sung at every
concert of Su music. Pakistan’s late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan popularized qawwali to the West after
the Sabri Brothers became renowned qawwali singers. In the 1970s, Shakila Bano Bhopali from
India was perhaps the most popular female qawwali singer who toured many countries to
entertain NRIs. Now Abida Parveen has joined this famous group. Now Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan, a nephew of Nusrat, is becoming popular especially with ‘Lagi man ki lagan’.
In India, the Wadali Brothers and Hans Raj Hans are top Su and qawwali singers. Another star is
Zila Khan, daughter of legendary Sitar maestro, Ustad Vilayat Khan is named after Amir Khusrao’s
Raag Zila Kaa .
Since 1960, Bollywood lms popularized qawwali since the classic ‘Barsat ki Raat’ ‘Mughal-e-
Azam’ had memorable qawwalis are remembered till today. Other hits come from ‘Amar, Akbar,
Anthony’. More recently, ‘Maqbool’ had a powerful number by Daler Mehndi, and this year ‘Jodha
Akbar’ had one “Khwaja mere Khwaja” by A. R. Rehman. Among the Punjabi folk singers, Hans Raj

Hans has a number of traditional Su numbers to his credit, Rabbi Shergill got overnight fame for
‘Bulla Ki Jaana’ and Kailash Kher for ‘Allah Ke Bande’. Although a Punjabi Pop Singer, Hans Raj
Hans, has made a name for himself as a Su singer as well and he is a great admirer of Osho,
reading and listening to his words for inspiration, he says. All these singers are reviving qawwali
with a modern touch.
Traditional qawwalis go one for one hour or more as in the case of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan that
transports listeners into a trance-like a stage with his artistry and surrender. They succeed in
touching the ones who are open to the call of the Ultimate. Su s use music as a medium, for
example in qawwali, to share the eternal message; and when it is sung with fervor, it brings one
closer to the Ultimate.
Pakistani Su singer Shafqat Ali, says, “Su music is more about ibadad (prayer) of God. The
whole idea of Su music is connecting to God through music. The lyrics of those songs are
mostly poems and shayari (poetry) written to praise God and talk about his love towards
mankind.”
Adds Su singer Abeeda Parveen, “Su ism is a practice in praise about the almighty. Music is a
broader term expressing love for the beloved. The intensity of the love is inde nable.”
Osho says, “Music comes closest to meditation. Music is a way towards meditation and the most
beautiful way. Listening to great music you suddenly become silent — with no effort. Falling in
tune with the music you lose your ego with no effort. You become relaxed, you fall into a deep
rest. You are alert, awake, and yet in a subtle way drunk.” Seems Osho is talking about Su
qawwali music.

Ways to Improve Quality of Urdu of the
Bollywood Movies
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Urdu cannot die out because it has very strong roots in Persia. The language itself is not only just
the language of the Muslims, but it is also the language of the Hindus. Ismail Merchant
Urdu is in fact a language of people belonging to so many different races, religions, or creeds. A
signi cant amount of the population from India and Pakistan have been in an argument over
their languages. People from Pakistan say that it is Urdu and the people from India call it Hindi.
In fact, the language is the same technique. So in Indian lms too, the language that is spoken is
Urdu.
The famous Ismail Merchant rightly said, “A few words of Hindi appear here or there, but it’s all
Urdu. I feel that if the popular culture, which is what Hindi lms are, uses Urdu, it’s not going to
diminish”.
However, these days the quality of the Urdu language in Indian lms is deteriorating. There is a
great usage of swear words and too many wrong pronunciations. Linguists are constantly
worrying about this trend. They usually propose the following solutions to improve the quality of
Urdu in Bollywood movies.
Hiring competent Urdu linguists
The quality of the scripts cannot be improved without competent scriptwriters. These days
some lm directors and producers hire people who are not good at the Urdu language.
Accepting the in uence of Sanskrit on Urdu and letting go of the Persian
It is completely okay to use Hindi words in the script. It is completely understandable that the
Sanskrit has as much right on the Urdu language as the Persian. In fact, if we try to see from
an open heart, now Iran is a separate country. However, the region of India and Pakistan is still
inhabited by people who have a strong association with the Sanskrit language. So it is but
natural that the Urdu language of today will be replete with Sanskrit words, instead of
Persian.
Using dialects with strange accents only when required
Some lmmakers unnecessary put Urdu dialects with strange accents. The lms grab attention
this way. However, the common person might pick on an accent that is not even authentic. So
31. 18/04/2021 Bollywood Singers

it is the responsibility of the lmmakers not to make a fake dialect only for the publicity of the
lm.
Training sessions of the actors
Many of the contemporary actors do not quite know the correct usage or pronunciation of the
Urdu language. This is a sorry state of affairs. These actors should be trained for grammar,
style, pronunciation, and usage before they are cast in the movies.
Training session of the singers
Just like the contemporary actors, many of the contemporary singers do not quite have the
right language skills. They should also be trained for the correct Urdu usage while singing the
songs.
Hiring good Urdu lyricists
Along with good scriptwriters, the hiring of good Urdu lyricists is also necessary for the good
quality of language in the songs.

Indian Folk Songs
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Indian folk songs possess a rich history. Immensely popular all across the country, these songs
truly represent the cultural diversity of India. A rustic manifestation of the grand Indian
civilization, these songs have a spellbinding variety. Indian civilization boasts of extremely
diverse culture. Every region in India has different music culture. That explains the unbounded
assortment of folk styles found in India. Every state in India has its own typical style of folk
music. Often misconstrued as tribal music, Indian folk songs are altogether different things. Folk
music has fun and celebration at its root. This involves no formal training and most of the
famous folk singers in India have learned this art on their own.
Though folk music does not involve any formal teaching, people in rural India learn it from their
environment. Through these songs, they celebrate their life. One visit to rural India and people
can nd a plethora of folk songs suitable for every occasion. Whether it is engagements,
marriages, births, or festivals, folk music offers an incredible range for every event. One of the
most common sights is villagers singing songs during the time of planting, cropping and
harvesting. Those songs represent their optimism and hope for better agricultural results. Even in
Indian movies, these songs have been used. Typical engagement or marriage scene essentially
involves folk songs. These Indian folk songs give a familiar and friendly feeling to the actual
event.
Folk musicians primarily use drums in their music. Most of these drums are not re ned
instruments. Most common musical instruments used are; Dholak, Nal, Daf, Saringda, Ektar,
Dotar, Rabab, Santur, Bansuri, Kartal, Chimpta, Ghungharu, Magadi Vina, Pung, Khol, Naggada,
Shankh etc. Interesting thing is, few of the instruments are used in a single folk style depending
upon particular regions. These instruments are made up of ordinary substances by the musicians
themselves. All these factors give a certain charm and rustic appeal to the tradition of Indian folk

Stars Twinkle at Night!
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Stars are known to lead a different lifestyle compared to the common man, and our Bollywood
stars are no different. Of late we have been ooded with claims of few stars that they go to bed
very late, almost in the morning. So, we went on to dig a little deeper into these late birds and
we have found that most of our stars prefer to stay awake at night!!
Amitabh Bachchan: He’s a self-confessed sleepless star. He says that he either reads or blogs at
night until the wee hours of the morning.
Shahrukh Khan: Shahrukh Khan’s sleeping hours were never revealed until he joined Twitter; he
plays games or tweets until the early hours in the morning these days.
Vidya Balan: Recently Vidya Balan revealed that she is unable to fall asleep during the night and
often reads her favorite book or chats with her close friend designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
Salman Khan and Aamir Khan: These two close buddies socialize after midnight and often go for
a midnight motorbike ride.
A R Rahman: The whole world knows that A R Rahman prefers to work at night and make his
singers sing at midnight or early morning. He believes that voice is most re ned during these
hours; we must believe him considering his ne music. Due to this criterion, all the directors he
works with (be it Mani Ratnam, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, or Ashutosh Gowariker) are forced to
sit with the maestro during the wee hours in the morning.
Hrithik Roshan: Recently Hrithik revealed that he’s part of Shahrukh Khan’s inner circle of friends
and they end up spending time partying or chatting at night. The friend circle includes Arjun
Rampal, Karan Johar, Uday Chopra, and Sanjay Kapoor and they often gather at Mannat (Shahrukh
Khan’s home) during the night for spending time with each other.
Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan: They choose nightlife for the obvious reason, privacy. They
know that they can’t go to a restaurant for a relaxing time during the day, so they prefer going
out late at night to any ve-star restaurant so that they will be able to spend some quality time
with each other. Kareena also goes out with close friends like Tusshar Kapoor and Manish
Malhotra for a late-night dinner.

Sanjay Dutt: According to Sanju baba, sleeping before 5 am is unhealthy!! Cooking, spending
time with friends, watching television…so many activities are there during the night and ask his
neighbors what song he played yesterday early morning.
OK, we have exceptions as well; we are talking about the tness freaks Akshay Kumar and Rekha,
according to sources both go to bed around 10.30 PM. Rekha doesn’t want to compromise on her
beauty sleep and Akshay as the true Khiladi doesn’t want to risk tness.

Indian Pop Music
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Indian pop, indie pop, or Hindi pop prevails in many names in the over 1 billion Indian
population. With Hindi as the main language, there are many other languages where pop music
entertains the masses and classes.
It was introduced in the 80s by Nazia Hassan a Pakistani singer who gave India áap jaisa koi meri
zindagi mein aaye’ with music by Biddu that rocked the country and made pop viable in a nation
based on classical music. The youth embraced it and the adults gave it a listening ear and from
then pop entered the bloodstream of Indian music. Suddenly it was everywhere Mithun
Chakravorthy had all pop songs, like disco dancer, and Rishi Kapoor danced on songs like ‘sara
zamana hasino ka diwana, paise ye paisa. Since then at least one song in a movie is made the
pop style if not then a remix does happen so the song can penetrate to a wider audience.
Famous pop singers in the 90s include Usha Utup, Sharon Prabhakar, and Peenaz Masani. Then
the main stage was grabbed by Baba Sehgal, Alisha Chenai, Sagarika, Shaan, Lucky Ali, and
Colonial Cousins (Leslie Lewis and Hariharan). In more recent times Sunidhi Chauhan has rocked
the Indian pop screen with songs like Krazy Kiya Re, Sonu Nigam with dil ye dil, Asha Bhosle,
Bombay Vikings, Juggy D, and Sanober.
Not only has Indian pop intrigued Indians but it has also captivated people around the world.
Moulin Rouge had the song Chamma Chamma by Alka Yagnik. Jay Z mixes Punjabi with his songs
in England and Rishi Rich of Indian origin works with Britney Spears. Bombay Rockers is a duo an
Indian Danish duo who sings English and Hindi and are have sold more albums than they can
believe.
Punjabi rap and Hindi rap are growing in popularity and have more and more listeners today. No
doubt the Indian music industry is one of the biggest in the world churning out new and more
albums of movies, self-videos, dance videos, and gaining a high sell rate too. Movie songs are
released before the movie to build hype around the movie and this promotional tactic does work
pro table. With an ever-growing demand by the youth and today’s modern Indian’s pop music is
in demand than ever before.

Nazia Hassan: Iconic Pop Singer, Lilting
Voice
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
On my way back home while listening to the radio station the presenter of the radio program
announced, “The next song to be played now is from the lm “Qurbani” and the title of the song
being “Aap Jaisa Koi” music by Biddu and singer Nazia Hassan. One just can’t forget this song and
the singer which ignited the disco fever amongst the masses then.
So many interesting anecdotes came to my mind hearing the lm Qurbani followed by this song
“Aap Jaisa Koi” and the popular pop singer Nazia Hassan. My mind started thinking why not pen
down the short pieces and share a couple of anecdotes out there.
It was the Actor, Producer, and Director of Qurbani fame namely Feroz Khan who had approached
the Indian composer Biddu settled in London who was popular for the hit songs he had
composed during the late seventies.
Feroz Khan had two conditions set rmly for Biddu. First, the recording of this song would be
done in London and not in Mumbai. Second, the playback singer would not be from India. While
Feroz Khan was on the lookout for a singer in London who could sing in Hindi. It was here that
actor Zeenat Aman suggested the young singer Nazia Hassan to Feroz Khan. For the shooting of
the movie Qurbani in London, the producer had rented a place in Chelsea for the shooting
duration.
Nazia Hassan began singing in the late 1970s when she appeared on several television shows on
PTV as a child artist. She was just eight years of age then. The professional break came to her at
the young age of fteen years when she sang for the 1980 lm Qurbani. The recording of this
song took place in a studio at the corner of Oxford Street.
The theme of the song was the introduction scene for Sheela (Zeenat Aman) the gorgeous
nightclub dancer in a red gown whereas Rajesh (Feroz Khan) is in the club watching Sheela
perform.
On hearing this lovely number from the young Nazia Hassan her Mother felt either she would
make it a super hit or break it as a op. Father was a bit apprehensive as he did not want their
kid’s studies to get affected in any way. What surprises is that music just a hobby for Nazia but

her achievements in this craft were something that many would aspire to achieve it in their
career.
The lm Qurbani music album sold over ten lakh copies then. It was for the rst time that a non-
Indian and the youngest ever Nazia Hassan won the Filmfare Award for the Best Singer in the
year 1981. The release of this movie Qurbani in June 1980 was indeed a grand affair. The Marathi
Mandir theatre in Mumbai was a house full for the next three months to full capacity. Not only
the lm but even the music was able to set the cash registers ringing at the Box Of ce.
With the passage of time and with the growing popularity of the song Nazia Hassan was seen
performing it live on the center stage. Qurbani made the word “Disco” popular in India and
people raved about disco then.
The young singer from Pakistan Nazia Hassan captivated the hearts of millions across the globe
and became a popular star overnight. The song “Aap Jaisa Koi” (means Someone Like You)
changed everything then in the 1980s. The prime spot in Binaca Geetmala for the next 14 weeks
had Nazia Hassan topping the charts with “Aap Jaisa Koi” leaving behind Lata Mangeshkar at
number two position for the songs of her lm Aasha.
Post Qurbani in 1981 Nazia released her rst music album titled “Disco Deewane”. Some of her hit
numbers include Disco Deewane, Boom Boom, Ao Na, and Lekin Mera Dil to name a few. It was only
in the year 1992 post her album release Nazia left her singing career. She completed her
education in the UK, got a law degree. After an enormously successful career as a singer, she
later worked with the United Nations in the Security Council. She continued her social work even
in New York and worked for children from the UN platform. The Government of Pakistan has
conferred upon Nazia Hassan the highest civilian award Pride of Performance.
Nazia Hassan passed away at a very young age. She succumbed to lung cancer in London on 13
August 2000. She had been admitted to North London Hospice in London N12 three days earlier
when her condition deteriorated.
Nazia Hassan passed away early but still continues to remain forever young and beautiful in our
minds. India Today nominated her as one of the 50 people who helped change the face of India
while “Aap Jaisa Koi” remains India’s rst international sound as far as music goes.
Tribute to this legendary singer Nazia Hassan. Had Nazia been alive she would have been 50
years of age today.

Indian Idol III – Will Amit Paul Be The
Next Debojit And Qazi?
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Amit Paul:
The Shillong lad has made the people of the hilly terrain swell with pride. Watching the public
response in the Indian Idol III towards him was amazing and exemplary. The hilly state known by
Khasi and Jaintia communities going berserk against a Bengali lad is something which is hardly
seen.
If there is something that is bringing the populace of Meghalaya to one stage is their af nity
which they all share, and Amit Paul has done the same with the universal language of music. He
has brought the picture of Shillong on national television and in the world arena. It is a
remarkable and to – be – noticed step, how a young boy made his name in the national musical
show, but also given a name to the state he belongs to.
His effort will de nitely infuse life for the young boys and girls of the state. They will come down
to the plain and will be exploring the possibilities available here. And they will be successful
since they do have musical culture. They love music, and they enjoy it. It is in their life. Chief
Minister of the state Zoramthanga bestowing upon him the ambassador of peace of the state is
noteworthy.
It is supposed Amit Paul is the rst person who with his rst shot in the musical arena was given
this prestigious nomenclature ever given by a state to their budding singers. It is a different story
that Amit Paul got eliminated earlier, but with the wild card entry, he again came into the
musical extravaganza.
And since then he is rocking the stage with his melli uous voice. Those who are closely watching
the television show will be knowing how his song Pehla…Nasha…Pehla ….Pyar …He… from the
movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and Nasha …Ye ….Pyar ..Ka..Nasha ..He…from the movie Mann
mesmerized the whole television viewers and the judges.
In the past couple of years, in the frenzy of SMS musical shows, many talented singers were
thrown into the top position and they have won the game, thanks to the regional tone and tenor

(red tag) they carry. They become the symbol of the state and people do everything to make them
win the race. The whole machinery of young blood is poured upon them.
Debojit Saha:
In this regard, Debojit Saha who represented Assam from the region Silchar in the Sa Re Ga Ma
musical show is a classic example. He won the title with the support of the state. The volume of
the votes that he garnered overshadowed his rival. Not to mention the bad mouth of the judges
helped him winning the show. Regional media captured the news giving the people of the state
to get united in the musical maha sangram.
Qazi Tauqeer:
There is Qazi Tauqeer of Kashmir who participated in the Fame Gurukul and won the title. With
the help of the regional af nity and of his charismatic personality he swayed the whole nation
and ultimately won the game. He was catapulted within days as a young hero representing
trouble-torn Kashmir. He never passed the musical test but thanks to his fans following he was
never shown the exit door.
Now the clock is back on Amit Paul. Looking at the mass response of this lad it seems he is going
to be the next Indian Idol III; the coronation of the title will be in the namesake only. But not to
forget his competitor, Prashant Tamang, a Nepali of Darjeeling is in the grand nale. He also
carries the trans-regional-national af nity of Nepalis. He never came to the danger zone, the exit
door.
Fans of the two titans will de nitely ght tooth and nail to make their idol win the game. It will
be a close ght. Both have the mass of a volume of fans heavy. And they will do everything for
the sake of region/ state and cultural af nity.

Indian Idol III Big Fight Between Chang
And Amit Paul
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
I still remember when I saw him in the audition I got completely moved by his voice, his singing,
and of course by his effervescent persona. That time it crossed my mind, YEAAAHHH…. he is a
man of a long race and this is what he has been doing till now.
He is one of the strong contenders in the Indian Idol race. Others like Amit Paul, Ankita, Emon
are in the race but Meiyang Chang is there giving them a strong ght making them bite the
bullet.
Staying after every elimination episode, only his singing talent and X- factor has helped him to
sail so far.
Though the audience seems divided, the public who supports him is also not lesser than the
other combined contestant’s volume. Not to mention, he is very different from other contestants
by his cute, unique looks and talent.
From the bottom of my heart, I pray he clears each and every coming elimination round. After all,
I am a great fan of him. It is not that I weigh heavily towards him, I nd Amit Pual also
mesmerized me very much.

Popular Indian Wedding Songs
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Ask around about traditional Indian wedding music, and the rst thing you’ll hear about is the
shenai. A shenai is a traditional wooden wind instrument that is considered to be good luck
because it represents the culture of India. Shenai is the oldest and the most pleasing music in
northern India and promises the prosperity and well-being of the newlywed couple. This
instrument is typically used during the wedding procession and the wedding ceremony itself
because of its strong traditional value.
The Ladies Sangeet is a special ceremony during north Indian marriages where the elderly
women sit with a Dholki and a spoon to drum and sing old traditional wedding songs.
Bengalis, on the other hand, don’t use any instruments during the marriage ceremony. However,
when the exchange of ower garlands happens, family members blow whistles and seashells for
good luck.
But even if it’s not traditional, music plays an important role in the Indian wedding business.
From turning tables to creating remixes, popular Bollywood music makes the guests’ feet move
and gets the party going.
Trance, metal, and rock music are the last thing you will hear at Indian marriages. Instead, the
music will be more cultural, depending on region and religion. Even though the music is
traditionally more cultural, just about anything goes for the dancing portion of the reception. As
long as it’s lively and energetic, it’s suitable. The only slow, sad music you’ll hear during an
Indian wedding is during the Bidayi or the departure of the bride.
Reception parties throw tradition to the wind and play the recorded Bollywood songs. The newer
songs are trendy and in high demand, but older Bollywood music still has a special place. Some
of the most popular songs played at nearly every Indian wedding are:
1. Lak 28 Kudi Da: This song talks about the girl’s physical appearance. The singer talks about
the size of a girl’s waist and her weight. As for judgemental as it sounds, it’s actually quite
popular and ts the occasion well because lots of single Indian girls t the pro le described in
the song.

2. Pyar Ki Pungi: Sung by Mika Singh in the movie Agent Vinod, the song begins with a
traditional shenai tune. It has such meaningful lyrics that almost all newly married couples
choose to dance to it.
3. Maujaan Hi Maujaan: From the movie Jab We Met, this is a very typical Indian song portraying
happiness during Indian wedding ceremonies. Maujaan means delighted happiness.
4. Ainvayi Ainvayi: This song, from the lm Band Baaja Baaraat, literally means “just like that.”
The movie itself is about wedding planners, and the song provides traditional Indian wedding
concepts inside of a nice beat.
5. Laung Da Lashkara: The movie Patiala House provides yet another song where marriage is
being celebrated within the family. In this song, in particular, the tenderness and auspiciousness
of weddings are highly demonstrated.
6. Sadi Galli: This is a fun song from the lm Tanu Weds Manu. In it, the guys are teasing the girls
at a wedding party to come towards them. Because it is so fun to listen and dance to, it is one of
the top-played tracks.
7. Nagada Nagada: A nagada is a drum, and in traditional Punjabi matrimony, the nagada is
played before the ceremonies and the rituals.
8. Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai: This is a very old song from the lm Aadmi Sadak Ka. In the
movie, the song is performed by the friends of the groom telling the world that their friend is
getting married today.
9. Aahun Aahun: From the movie Love Aaj Kal, this song is infamous for its beats, lyrics, and the
insane energy created amongst the guests during the dance.
10. Munni Badnaam Hui Darling: From the movie Dabangg, Mamta Sharma and Aishwarya Nigam
sing a song where a girl tells her boyfriend she’s just been insulted because of him. It may seem
ironic, but for some reason, all age groups love this song.

Techniques For Singing Soulfully
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
‘I don’t know what happens to me on stage. Something else seems to take over.’ These words of
Maria Callas, the famous American soprano singer, re ects what many people feel when they
sing from the heart or from the soul, an experience where they are uplifted from their everyday
selves and get in touch with a deeper reality at the core of their being. In the words of Nobel
Prize-winning poet and composer Rabindranath Tagore: ‘Music is the purest form of art…
therefore true poets, they who are seers, seek to express the universe in terms of music… The
singer has everything within him. The notes come out from his very life. They are not materials
gathered from outside.’
Here are some techniques for singing soulfully that singers can try.:
Have a moment or two of silence before singing, focusing on remaining centred in the heart
rather than outside distractions. As the old Chinese proverb goes ‘If I keep a green bough in
my heart, then the singing bird will come to sit on it.’ The Indian musician and composer Sri
Chinmoy, for example, suggests that in the silence one can try and invoke some fundamental
qualities of singing – consciousness, soulfulness, con dence and oneness to name a few.
Singing powerfully and singing soulfully need not be contradictory – indeed one can help the
other. One visualisation that might help you do is to imagine, whilst singing powerfully, that
you are holding a bowl lled to the brim of water inside you and you don’t want to spill any of
it, you don’t even want to cause ripples on the surface of the water. In this way, you can feel
the inner strength in which power and stillness come together.
When singing from the heart, it helps to draw attention to the heart by putting one’s hand to
one’s chest, especially for beginners. This enables one to feel rst the physical vibration in the
centre of the chest, then the spiritual feeling of being in the heart. In Hindu and Buddhist
singing and chanting, a special hand position called the Anjali mudra is often used, folding the
hands in the centre of the chest so that the two thumbs are touching the centre of the chest –
in the West, we are of course familiar with this as the prayer position.
When singing in groups, the primary quality to focus on is oneness between the group
members. Try and not listen for the sound of your own voice in the chorus, but rather imagine

Characteristics of Pakistani Punjabi
Songs
16 April 2021
Categories: Bollywood
Punjab is the largest province of Pakistan in terms of population. That is why the Punjabi
language and culture dominate the country’s cultural portrait. However, after the independence,
Pakistan needed things to unite the various ethnic and cultural groups into becoming one nation.
Hence the state promoted the use of Urdu to represent a shared national culture of Pakistan.
People of Punjab adopted Urdu and with the integration of Urdu and Punjabi, Northern Indian
migrant’s culture, and the culture of people of Punjab, a very beautiful new cultural landscape
was born. A part of this cultural landscape is Pakistani Music.
Today Punjabi songs come in a variety of avors. There are the traditional Punjabi Bhangra songs,
but then there are also Pakistani Punjabi movie songs, Pakistani Punjabi pop, Pakistani Punjabi
Rock, and Punjabi Su Songs.
Similar experiments were done in India; however, Indian Punjabi songs are limited to the Indian
Punjabi speaking regions. Until or unless they are part of some major Hindi movie, they usually
don’t get that much popularity on a national level.

There are some basic characteristics of Punjabi songs that make them different from Indian
Punjabi music and Punjabi Rap and Rock from the UK. Pakistani Punjabi songs rely a lot more on
poetry than music. The poetic in uence of the Urdu language can be seen and observed on
Pakistani Punjabi songs easily. The traditional pattern of Urdu Poetry is used to write the lyrics of
songs, but the cultural elements of Punjab are also present and cannot be ignored easily.
Another characteristic of Pakistani Punjabi songs is that the voice of the singer is more prominent
than the sound of musical instruments. Madam Noor Jahan, one of the most prominent female
singers of South Asia, was the rst to introduce this trend where the melody of the ute and the
vocal lead take over the music. Later on, the modern Pakistani Punjabi Songs follow the
traditional folk styles of Punjabi music, and dhool has regained prominence once again even in
the Punjabi Rock and Punjabi Pop songs.
Since the culture of Punjab is shared between India, Pakistan and now you can say that UK’s
Punjabi community also shares the same cultural background. There is so much that these
cultures share and borrow from each other, the music has no boundaries and it does not
understand the rivalry between India and Pakistan. It is shared and cherished across the border
and the songs of Punjab are enjoyed across the globe by the Punjabi and non-Punjabi South
Asians.

Snake Boat Racing, Indian Culture and
Pookalam!

The Kerala Harvest Festival of Onam is one of the most special events in the Indian state of
Kerala (in the southwest of India). This 10-day celebration of the harvest additionally celebrates
the annual return of the spirit of the great king of King Mahabali and takes place in August or
September according to the Malayalee calendar.
The Kerala Harvest Festival is celebrated across the state, and although heavily in uenced by
Hindu mythology, the local Christian and Muslim populations also participate, making it a
celebration of local unity and community.
Onam is known for the traditional sports and activities that are performed over the 10 days, the
most famous sport being the Snake Boat races. These boats commemorate the Legend of the
Vanishing Boy and have taken on even greater signi cance since Prime Minister Nehru instituted
a special trophy. Each boat has a crew of 150 men and the rowers are accompanied by traditional
singers that help the rowers keep time.
In addition to the sporting traditions, one of the most impressive traditions in the building of the
Pookalam, a dramatic decoration made of owers that are displayed in the front courtyard of
multi-family homes. Every day more owers are added and the design becomes more intricate
and detailed.
The third major tradition of Onam is the big feast know as Onasadya. The meal is traditionally
served while sitting on the oor using banana leaves as plates. Be aware, that this meal is
traditionally strictly vegetarian. Meat eaters, get your x at another time!

Creating a CD of 5 to 10 tracks will be enough for them to make an educated decision before
signing you up.
Dubai has numerous recording studios located inside and surrounding the city in places such as
Deira, Downtown, and Abu Dhabi.
Make sure that you have a broad selection of various genres so that you are open to more
opportunities and venues.
Get professional photographs
There is nothing worse than being empty-handed when an agency or venue requests some
professional photographs.
Hire a photographer to take a selection of pictures in hi-resolution to be used in any promotion,
web sites, and social media.
Get on social media
It is important that you start creating a following as soon as possible. Create fan pages on
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter where people can nd you and watch any of your live
performances. Allow your fans to share and comment to get maximum outreach.
Be sure to reply to comments and announce any future performance dates. Remember that
venues need to be lled to ensure that you keep singing there!
Print some business cards
Another highly embarrassing and unprofessional occasion is when a potential client or venue
asks for your business card and you don’t have any to hand them.
You will nd that business cards are still extremely popular in the UAE. This may be due to the
multicultural population of Dubai and the UAE. A good company that offers affordable business
card printing is DESCO.

Having a professional and attractive business card is the quickest way to get your contact details
into the right hands and generate some business.
Be sure to have the following information printed on the business cards:
· Make it clear what you are offering
· Your Name
· Contact Numbers
· Email Address
· Website Address
Build a website
I have been asked by countless agencies if I had a website which they can use to direct their
clients to. Having an online portfolio is fast becoming the future for many entertainers.
Your website should look professional in its appearance, be easy to navigate and locate
information, have your tracks embedded or linked to, and have professional images.
Including any video on your website of live performances is also a powerful advertising tool.
Visit venues
Get dressed up and put your best shoes on! Time to get out there and start visiting venues to
drum up some business.
Simply visiting restaurants, bars, golf clubs, and nightclubs is a great start. Ask to meet with the
entertainment manager at each venue.
It’s always wise to call the venue prior to visiting to ensure that the person you need to speak to
is present when you plan to visit them.
Register with an agency or entertainment company
This really goes without saying but it is surprising that when I meet other singers who are just
starting out, they tell me they have yet to do this.
