Example of a research task
Case study 1:
Oxana Malaya
Case study 2:
France Victor
Case study 3:
Animal experiments
Case Study 4: Genie Case Study 5: Edik from The
Ukraine 1999
Who is Oxana? Describe her family
background.
Oxana Malaya is a woman who is
mostly well known for being a feral
child who was “raised by dogs”.
Oxana was born in a village called
Nova Blagovishchenka in the Ukrainian
SSR. She was born a normal child but
at age three she was neglected by her
alcoholic parents and ended up living
surrounded by dogs.
What sort of animal behaviour
did Victor learn?
Victor proved that he had
become accustomed to the cold.
Victor also could not talk and is
described as walking on all fours
and walking like a wild animal.
Victor also learned to fend for
himself in the wild as many
animals do.
What were the findings of
the Kellogg’s experiment?
Dr Kellogg discovered that
the chimpanzee Gua was
able to adapt to many
human ways. She wore
shoes and walked upright
like a human. She was also
able to open doors and
drink out of a glass even
before the boy could. Gua
was also able to climb and
jump before the son. The
chimpanzee was able to
respond to different
phrases but could never
use actual words or phrases
herself.
How was Genie treated by
her ‘family’? What human
behaviour did Genie not
learn?
Genie was locked up from
the age of two years old by
her father, who kept her
locked up for 11 years ‘to
protect her from what he
considered the dangers of
the outside world’. She was
harnessed all day to a
baby’s potty seat and at
night she slept with her
arms restrained inside a
sleeping bag which was a
kind of crib/cage. Genie
did not properly learn how
to stand up properly and
walked with a stooped
posture. She also was very
silent and did not have an
ability to use language.
Who is Edik? Describe Edik’s
‘family background’.
Edik was a four year old boy in
Ukraine who was found living with
dogs. For two years these dogs
were his only company. He was
found living in a run-down
apartment in a poor area of
Ukraine.
