4. WATER
WATER TRANSPORTING AND DISPENSING SYSTEM
Water transportation is a big problem in rural and
informal settlements. Residents mostly women
travel distances to get access to a water source
there after travel back carrying heavy loads that
add up to 20-40kg of water. The aim of this brief
was to seek the main problem and find a solution
on how water transportation and collecting could
be done much easier with less strain on the human
body.
1
5. The transporting of water has been and remains an
ongoing challenge. Domestic water reticulation- a tap in
the house- is considered common place now in mosted
developed countries. This is not the case in developing
economies. Water as to be fetched from a central outlet
and transported back for use in the domestic home.
Design and develop an optimum
water collection,
transporting and delivery
system to be used within the
domestic environment. The
product will secure a
valuable functional place in both
the rural and informal
settlement areas of Sub
Saharan African countries

Solution Diepsloet and Lanseria informal settlment problems
People in Diepsloet complained about the horrible
conditions in which the water was in due to pipe
leaks which is surrounded by debris thus
contaminating the water. People all had to travel to a water
source a distance away from their home and they would
travel 7-8 times individually if they were to collect 96L of
water to sustain a family of 6 for 24hrs Collecting Transporting Dispensing

When the top 20L container is empty the
user then swaps the bottom full container
allowing the full container to rest on top of
the empty container
Both 20L containers have a water
dispenser tap in the middle of the
body. The cover of the product
then singles out the tap of the
container at the top to allow the
user to get access to water. The
tap is approximately 430mm from
the ground allowing buckets to be
filled with water.
The product can be pulled up steep and
rocky terrain or push on level and
decending steep terrains.

show the scale of the product referenced to the scale1:4 human ergonome.

11. This project is based on the Cobra tap
competition brief for 2015 where designers
were required to design an innovative basin
and tap design for the bathroom area which
followed current design trends and also had
to resolve issues like:
Ÿ Hygiene
Ÿ Low cost manufacturing
Ÿ Aesthetically appealing
Ÿ Ease of installation
8
12. RESEARCH
Automatic taps also known as infra-red taps are touch free taps which use a motion sensor to
operate and let water out. Once the user moves their hands away from the tap it stops running
completely. This means no more leaking of taps by users who failed to close the tap properly.
The users hands do not do not touch the tap at all and this type of technology has advantages
like:
Ÿ Ease of operation
Ÿ Stops the spread of germs and bacteria
Ÿ Prevents water overflow
Ÿ Save water and money
Ÿ Prevents scalding injuries

Design a tap and basin
which will stop the transfer
of bacteria, a tap that saves
water and cleans the users
hand better than current
taps and design something
out of the box
13. Since the brief was to design a bathroom tap and basin of any setting
environment i chose to go in the direction of shopping mall restrooms and
hotel public restrooms. The idea was to eliminate the touching of the tap, fully
functional tap and basin combination, minimalistic design and using as little
and cost effective material as possible.

The tap is fitted with a spray aerator which sprays hot water at an angle of 110
degrees. Spraying water saves much more water than normal running tap and
water that is sprayed cleans the hands thoroughly.
The tap and basin are assembled together
and the fixed into the floor where all the
water pipes and drainage system will be
housed.

user does not touch the tap due to
hygienic concerns and the spread

17. This brief aims at reinventing the concept of
the directional light of the flashlight, instead of
a directional light this design should not only
act as a flashlight but an areal light too. Areal
lighting gives of bigger angles of ambient
lighting which is also suitable to be used as a
study lamp during power cuts or when room
lighting is not required. At the same time not
running away from the flashlight concept
which is to use a light source in a dark space
in order to find your way or something.

TASK
The Angular portable light source
is a small ambient light torch which
also acts as an ambient light for
the study desk in times of Eskom
power cuts. The micro usb charging
ports allows the user to charge the
Angular with any power source via
usb cable of any smart phone. Its
symmetrical shape is designed to
ergonomically sit well in the users
hand with the power button placed
where the users thumb rests.
Design a small portable light source that solves the issue of load
shedding, easy method of recharging and produces ambient lighting for
studying but strong enough to still be used as a torch
A rechargeable torch that does
not use AA batteries
is proven to be cost saving unlike
other touches that use AA
batteries and the user is forced to
buy new batteries each time.
Rechargeable torches use very
little electricity to recharge fully.
A torch which produces ambient
lighting is not harsh on the human
eye and its bright enough to still
give the user clear sight in dark
surrounding.
All smart phones use a micro usb
so adding a micro usb port to the
torch will make easy charging
because it means the torch can
be recharged with the computer
and make use of smart phone
micro usb cable. The user will
never be in need of a charging
cable if they mistakenly forget the
cable.

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence,
purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color
of perfection. White means safety, purity and cleanliness.
White. Navy blue. Lime green.
Carrying the blue symbolism associated with the darker shades
of blue, navy conveys importance, condence, power, and
authority as well as intelligence, stability, unity, and conservatism.
Lime green inspires youthfulness, naivety and playfulness, it is
likedthe most by younger people. It creates a feeling of
anticipation, and helps to clear the mind of negativity.

26. SECHABAthe peoples project
There parts in South Africa and other neighboring
countries where water is scarce. People in rural areas
get their water from river streams, wells or borehole
taps but what happens when water wells have dried or
when river water is too contaminated to drink? Are
there any other alternatives to collecting water?
Sechaba is a unique rain water collecting bus stop
processed through rotational moulding.

PROJECT
The Sechaba Project is targeted in areas of South
Africa where water is scarce like the Eastern Cape.
The design makes of the use of rain water by
collecting the rain and storing it in its 3000L rotational
moulded body. The water is then passes through a
filter system fitted in the top saucer of the product.
The design also serves as a cost effective bustaxi
stop where by an individual can sit and wait for the
next taxi or freely use the water stored in the design

This was a concept that I had
proposed to Cofi Cedar Square
Four ways the whole idea behind
the
concept was to divide the lounge
into 3 sections, Standard access,
VIP access and VVIP access
to accommodate the middle and
high end class. The concept was
just a roughed idea that still
needed some work and the help of
an interior design but the overall
idea was applaud.
31. ABOUT MEABOUT ME
Im a young Ambitious and determined Industrial designer
currently renting in Pretoria and a full time industrial design
student at Tshwane university of Technology. Im from a loving
family of 4, both my parents and my 2 younger brothers and
currently located in Johannesburg,Fourways. Coming from a
family of lawyers and doctors my decision to study Industrial
design was not taken well by my family and relatives due to the
lack of knowledge about the profession but by winning design
awards and proving myself that this is what i love my parents
eventually caught on and have been behind me all the way. In
my spare time i enjoy the company of friends and family, going
out for dinner or late night at the movies and reading up on the
latest design trends, innovations and technology. I see myself as
a versatile person, im alsways open to learn new things or taking
on tasks i have never done before. Because of my design
background i catch on very quickly with any design discipline
that i have never been taught before.
