Judo became an official Olympic sport in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympics thanks to the advocacy of its founder Kano Jigoro. It was initially only for men divided into weight classes. While judo did not make the 1968 Olympics, it returned in 1972 and has remained an official event since. Women's judo was introduced as a demonstration event in 1988 and became official in 1992.
