History
Wimborne Minster is a beautiful market town in South West England and
resides in East Dorset (see appendix H1). It is situated at the join of the
rivers Stour and Allen around 5 miles north of Poole and is twinned with
Valognes, France and Ochsenfurt, Germany. Appendix H2 shows a
detailed map of the town as it was in 1900, the river Stour can be seen
running to the north east and the Allen winding to the north and through
the town itself.

A 2013 report by the Office for National Statistics showed that East Dorset
residents, such as those in Wimborne, Verwood and Ferndown, had the
longest life expectancy in the country out of the 346 places that were
assessed. Men and women in these areas are expected to live 4.4 years
longer than residents in close local boroughs of Bournemouth, tabled in
215th
place in the report and Poole in 114th
place.
Wimborne has a rich history which has shaped it into the popular country
town it is today. Towns are shaped by the context of their environment and
surroundings and this is true for the history of Wimborne Minster.
Archaeological evidence suggests that prehistoric field systems were
potentially the base for field boundaries and the roads as the town
developed. The ground foundations are London clay which were important
in the area for the manufacture of earthenware pottery and bricks, large
brickworks remained active into the 20th
century in and around Wimborne
Minster and was a significant source of income and employment for the
area.
Wimborne’s recorded history starts with that of the Saxon Nunnery, one of
the oldest religions founded in Dorset. A male monastery also resided,
although both were kept very much separate from the other. High walls

surrounding these establishments are mentioned in early records,
suggesting that the original Saxon town was indeed walled. The nunnery
and monastery were destroyed in 1013 in a Danish raid however a College
of Canons were founded in 1043 by Edward the Confessor, to live and
worship in what was to become the ‘Minster church’. This was extensively
built between 1120 and 1180 to support the Canons, much of this building
still survives today. Therefore, it can be argued that the town roots have
been forged in and around religion and worship from early Saxon times.
The development of the town as it is now, was highly influenced by the
religions active at specific times throughout history, determining the
direction of the town and its people. The Minster today is still a working
church and is also a popular tourist attraction with its chained library.
Appendix H3 shows the Minster Church past and present. In 1941 the iron
railings around the church yard were removed to assist in the war effort
and this can be seen in the photos as they were never replaced.
During the medieval period, the town was divided between two major
manors, each holding separate markets, building upon their own lands and
adding roads and suburbs. Seventy-three taxpayers were recognised in
Wimborne Minster in 1332, this was a relatively high number, Wareham for
example had only 27 recorded taxpayers at this time. All taxpayers
documented were common, low wealth job roles including teacher,
auctioneer, carpenter, Spicer and preacher.

Decline in the town was evident in the late 1340s, due to the emergence of
the black death in 1348. This pandemic entered Britain through a local
Dorset port, now known as Weymouth, and as people fled inland,
inadvertently the plague spread further throughout the country. An
estimated 25 million people died in Europe, almost one third of the total
population. An estimated 30-50% of the total population of England alone
died and was undoubtably was one of the worst recorded pandemics in
history. Considering the current Coronavirus pandemic, it is apt that
consideration is paid to the conditions of the time and the fear people must
have felt. A fear many people feel now, but today in an environment where
technology has played a critical role and the dissemination of information,
infection control, scientific progress and knowledge has helped the world
immensely to deal with the current outbreak.
However, over time, the town continued to grow again and develop,
building new suburbs over the next 200 years. Three chapels, in addition
to the Minster, were noted in the town during the medieval period, showing
that religion remained a central and significant aspect to the town’s way of
life and influence upon it. In 1547, the first year of Edward VI’s reign, the
Canons at the Minster were dissolved and removed from post, this also
resulted in the loss of the college free school. This evidences how the
influence of royal and parliamentary level decisions directly affected the

health of the town and its children. At this time, no provision was made for
a replacement school until 1563 when Elizabeth 1st
was on the throne. She
granted part of the former college of Canons to become Queen Elizabeth
School, a school still in full operation today in Wimborne. Contemporary
studies and recommendations evidence the link between good education
and health and well-being development throughout the lifespan (Scriven,
2017). It can therefore be argued that the no free school provision for
sixteen years within Wimborne would have been significantly detrimental
to the health of the town and its children and is evidenced through
historical documents of the time in which concerns were raised by the
towns people of Wimborne about the lack of free schooling.
Moving forward, Victorian and Edwardian times brought a railway and
station to Wimborne in 1847 (see appendix H4) and saw significant
development to industry and suburbs. A cattle market was built next to the
station, sawmills and a hotel. The 1892 census recorded the population of
Wimborne Minster as 6,203 and gravel and clay industries including
brickworks were established in the thriving market town. Many businesses
relied on natural resources for their trade, the lands were good for farming
and weekly markets and annual fairs became the towns life. Three schools
were running by 1865 and the town layout changed dramatically with the
focus shifting to the railway, however the medieval town centre remained
relatively unchanged.

The Victoria Cottage Hospital was opened in 1887 in honour of the jubilee
of Queen Victoria. The grounds were leased from Sir John Hanham with
the understanding that the site must be used as a cottage hospital for the
poor. Initially the hospital accommodated nine patients who were cared for
by one matron working 24 hours a day and who took no annual leave. The
community hospital was taken over by the NHS in 1948, is often referred
to as now as Wimborne community hospital and is still operational today
with facilities for 22 inpatients and numerous outpatient departments. This
hospital is highly beneficial and accessible to the contemporary local
community. Appendix H5 shows past and present photos of the hospital,
the original cottage hospital as it was, to the modern facilities it now has
which on the outside still resembles in part the original building.
Wimborne continued to thrive, avoiding many of the issues associated with
the depression of the 1920s and 1930s. Good transport links and proximity
to the south coast and Bournemouth meant that wealthy professionals
moved to the area, bringing jobs and opportunities. Unemployment and
crime rates at the time remained low in comparison with other areas of the
country, demonstrating how the social determinants of health, such as
good transport, can significantly affect the health of a community like
Wimborne in a positive way.

The railway and surrounding businesses now including breweries and
dairies, developing with the established rail links to London. The railway
closed in 1977, although it can be argued that this was not detrimental to
the area as the cattle market expanded ground to include part of the
former station, and Wimborne’s weekly market flourished. This is still an
ongoing event today and so much so, now has a multi-storey carpark to
accommodate the level of traffic visiting the market each week and events
such as the Wimborne Folk Festival and literacy festival bring numerous
visitors to the town each year (see appendix H6). This evidences that
Wimborne now has a significant tourism income, through the weekly
markets and many annual events throughout the year. However, one
notable negative effect of the railway closure was increased traffic and
congestion in Wimborne Minster, so a by-pass was opened in 1981 to
relive the pressure on the town.
Furthermore, significant suburban development around Wimborne Minster
and into Colehill particularly is evidenced and continues to this day. This is
further illustrated when in 2010 Waitrose opened on the site of the old
cricket pitch. This was the first superstore in the Wimborne area, before
this the only shops were small convenience shops in the Wimborne
Minster area. A large shop required travelling out of the area. This
expansion was controversial, with a lot of local opposition to the
Bournemouth Echo, 2010.

redevelopment of the area. However, East Dorset District Council
approved the application despite planning officer’s advice to refuse it.
Nonetheless, the medieval town centre itself remains relatively unchanged
and retains historic character with the redevelopment and improvement to
the pedestrian and seating areas in the square the only major change.
Many buildings are Grade 2 listed and with the Minster Church still
dominating the skyline and surrounding countryside, the town continues to
thrive whilst respecting the history that has forged its contemporary growth
(see appendix H7).

Health and social
services
Wimborne Minster demographics show that the total population over the
age of 16 is 5812 out of 7014 residents. Of this, 32.7% are aged 65 or
over, with the median age being 47. Analysis of census data from 2011
shows that of all residents, 20.8% describe themselves as having fair,
bad or very bad health, therefore potentially requiring access to health
provision on a regular basis. Census statistics also show that 21.9% of
residents describe themselves as having a long-term health problem or
disability which limits their day-to-day activities in some way (UK
Census 2011).
The provision of health and social services within the Wimborne area
appears to be good, with the Victoria (Wimborne) Community Hospital a
lifeline facility for many residents. There are Gp services and NHS led
provisions alongside many community level organised health and

wellbeing services and sessions, which indicate robust coping systems
in place to address stressors.
The services and their impact on the community are detailed and
analysed below.
Victoria/Wimborne Community Hospital: Dorset Healthcare University
NHS Foundation Trust:
The Community hospital, which is located close to the town centre (see
appendix HS1), was opened in 1887 in honour of the jubilee of Queen
Victoria. As discussed in the history section above, the grounds were
leased from Sir John Hanham with the understanding that the site must
be used as a cottage hospital for the poor. Initially the hospital
accommodated nine patients who were cared for by one matron. The
community hospital was taken over by the NHS in 1948, is often
referred to as Wimborne community hospital and is now part of Dorset

Facilities at the hospital have grown over the past 130 years to
incorporate a large variety of services for the local community including
accommodating 22 in-patients in Hanham ward, a minor injuries unit,
operating theatre, endoscopy suite, out-patients department,
physiotherapy department and X-ray facilities.
The out-patient facilities include Audiology, Cancer Treatment,
Dermatology, Diabetic Clinic and Echo Cardiology. Services also
provide Stroke Early Supported Discharge.
The minor injuries unit is vital as it provides a local point of contact for
minor injuries treatment that otherwise would mean travelling to Poole
or Bournemouth Hospitals and also serves the outlying areas of
Wimborne and the countryside villages, particularly to the north of the
parish of Wimborne Minster. The minor injuries unit normally provides a
walk-in service, details of changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic can
be seen in appendix HS2 which evidences that changes to the
protocols have been made including running on telephone triage and an
appointment only basis at the present time.
In analysis, this hospital and all the services it provides are vital to the
community. Other hospitals in the area are Poole and Bournemouth,
both of which are further away and are potentially harder for people to
access and travel to, particularly without their own vehicle. Appendix
HS3 shows the location of other hospitals relative to Wimborne and
travelling times, which are taken in good driving conditions. Heavier

conditions potentially make these journeys significantly longer by car
and more so by public transport as buses in the Wimborne area are not
so frequent especially early in the morning and into the evening.
Furthermore, analysis of the NHS reviews and ratings show that patient
satisfaction is very high across the board for the services provided by
the hospital with many positive comments regarding the facilities,
services and staff.
Gp Services: NHS:
Gp services for the Wimborne Minster area comprise of three surgeries.
The Quarter Jack Surgery, Walford Mill Surgery and The Old
Dispensary. Appendix HS4 details their locations within Wimborne
Minster and all three service the Minster and the outlying areas of
Wimborne and surrounding villages. The Quarter Jack Surgery has
operated since 1907, has a ‘good’ CQC rating, as does the Walford Mill
Medical Centre and the Old Dispensary currently has a rating of
‘outstanding’.
All surgeries provide a full range of NHS Gp services including online
services, electronic prescription requests, district nursing services, well
man clinics and maternity services.
All are currently working in line with Covid-19 guideline protocols.

Within the Wimborne Minster area 11.4% of the 7,014 residents provide
unpaid care with 20.2% of these carers providing 50 hours or more
each week. The provision of support for unpaid carers in the area
should be considered. The three surgeries in the area provide advice
and links to services on and off site for carers to access. Appendix HS5
which shows snapshots from the websites and shows that the Walford
Mill surgery has a ‘Health Coach’ to help people manage the day to day
practical and emotional aspects of their conditions.
This also links to community level services such as those provided by
the Allendale centre, discussed below. Their groups and sessions will
also be of support and benefit to carers within the community, such as
the Tai Chi session for people with Parkinson’s which family and friends
can also attend.

The Allendale Centre:
The Allendale Centre in Hanham Road Wimborne is a community
centre which runs various clubs and events to enhance the health and
wellbeing of the local community. There is a soft play area for under 5s,
a vibro-plate exercise centre, theatre, café, conference facilities and
exercise facilities available. It supports clubs and organisations
alongside small independent businesses running classes and the NHS
hold flu clinics in the winter for residents. Facilities also extent to
wedding receptions and music events and it has two on-site bars
showing that the centre is adaptable and very much involved in the
spirit and community of Wimborne.
Numerous health and fitness classes are available at the centre
including Health Walks around Wimborne for exercise and social
contact, Play Sportz for young children, Flexercise, Weightwatchers,
Zumba and Pilates classes. There is also an over 50s lunch club,
DanceAway classes, Allendale Bridge Club, Guitar Club, U3A Bridge

and Scrabble sessions and Baby Yoga. Tai Chi classes run by the East
Dorset Branch of Parkinson’s UK have also commenced at the centre
facilitating people in the area with the disease and is well regarded by
those who attend and is a support avenue for carers and family
members as well. Appendix HS6 shows a local article in The Allendale
magazine talking about some of these sessions and the benefits.
The WDCA which is the Wimborne and District Community Association
are responsible for the running, delivery and organisation of the
Allendale Centre. Currently the centre is closed as per Covid-19
protocols and is only open for NHS Blood Donor Sessions as this is
considered a vital service.
The café at the Allendale has recently opened for takeaway services
and throughout the pandemic has offered free hot meals to those in
need within the community in financial or health difficulties.
Complementary and Alternative Therapies and Treatments:
Wimborne Minster has six businesses offering private complementary
and alternative therapies and treatments on a private basis. These
include acupuncture, massage, osteopathy, chiropractic services,

counselling and homeopathic treatments. Other services include cranio
sacral therapy, yoga and meditation.
This demonstrates that the use of these types of therapies are in
demand in Wimborne Minster and the surrounding areas and
consequently that there are the finances present within the community
to cover the costs at private prices. Appendix HS7 details all the private
therapies available in the locality with information on the services they
provide. These services will evidently only be available to those
residents with the finances to pay for private therapies. Wimborne is an
affluent area, although there will be a degree of residents who would be
unable to access these private health facilities due to cost.
Job Centre/Employment Access:
Wimborne Minster itself is an affluent area and the census data from
2011 evidences that unemployment is relatively low, recorded as 366
economically inactive residents, not including retired and long-term sick
or disabled. In analysis, it can be argued that these numbers, which do
include students and people caring for family or home, will have
changed since 2011. People may wish to return to work as children
grow up, students graduate, and several retired persons may also wish
to re-enter the working environment to some degree. Furthermore, with
the current pandemic and its effect on business, access to job

assistance and job centres is likely to significantly increase in demand.
There is a couple of specialist recruitment centres in the Wimborne
locality, such as 360 Recruitment. In terms of access to government led
Jobcentres the nearest available sites would be Poole (20mins drive),
Bournemouth (30mins drive) or Blandford (20mins drive). Journeys
would be substantially longer by public transport and in heavy traffic
which is usually evident on the local roads particularly around
Bournemouth and Poole in normal circumstances, before the Covid-19
pandemic.
This itself may mean some residents are unable to easily access job
centres services due to distance, lack of transport or other related
personal factors adding stress to an already stressful situation.
Wimborne Foodbank+:
Wimborne food bank is situated in Gordon Road within the Leigh Park
Community Centre. The food bank has been operational since 2012
and is run by Faithworks Wessex, an independent Christian charity.
The foodbank provides food parcels for those in need in the community
through a voucher scheme. Vouchers are provided by Gps, Citizens
advise Bureau, Job Centres, homeless charities and schools.

Other services on offer within the foodbank include budget coaching
and advice, cooking and eating well courses, community lunches and
holiday top up vouchers for people who receive free school meals which
can be exchanged for small food parcels.
In a telephone interview, food bank coordinator Sharon Keenan advised
that packages are pre-packed and then extras, nappies for example,
are provided on assessment on the day. She also said that as
Wimborne is a generally affluent area with a significant older population,
they have more than enough volunteers and even have a waiting list for
people wishing to volunteer. Other food banks such as Bournemouth
and Poole often don’t have enough volunteers, she added. Appendix
HS8 details the 2019 annual report for the foodbank showing the
assistance they have provided to the Wimborne community and where
donations have originated. This evidences that there is a growing
demand for food bank services even though the area is as evidences
shows, an affluent locality.
Sharon also talked about how the other services have had to cease due
to the Covid-19 pandemic, but they have adjusted. Now providing
cookery kits, recipe cards and YouTube video links on how to cook the
meals to temporarily replace the cookery courses that were due to be

The food bank also run the community fridge initiative from the
Allendale Centre. This is currently closed but normally is available for
people to put in fresh excess food they have, and food can be taken out
by anyone who needs it. Local shops including Waitrose also donate to
the fridge, with volunteers going to the shops to collect excess food that
otherwise would be wasted.
In analysis, the food bank and the services they provide are essential to
the growing area of Wimborne Minster and the larger surrounding area
of Wimborne such as Colehill and Lye Park.
The issue that even before the pandemic, demand had increased by
50% from 2018 to 2019 shows the need for the food bank services are
increasing despite the affluent area. The need is compounded by the
pandemic and the normal level of demand, in normal circumstances, for
the Wimborne area is on a par with the area of Christchurch, a much
larger area in Dorset. For the months of April and May the usage and
demand has increased 93% on this time last year due to the effect of
Covid-19 pandemic. That to date, the food bank has provided 500
parcels this year, the total for the whole of last year was 760. Appendix

foodbank and the services they provide including the community fridge
initiative.

Salvation Army: Wimborne:
The Salvation army is situated near to the Minster Church just off the
square. They have a congregation of which half are aged over 70 years
old.
In regards to the issue of homelessness, the Salvation army advised
me that if they have an issue with a homeless person in Wimborne,
occasionally this happens but it is not frequent, they will then consult
with the Boscombe Branch who my contact advises are well versed in
homelessness issues and the problems they face.
The Salvation Army offers luncheon clubs on a Thursday and a parent
and toddler group on a Wednesday at very cheap prices with services
on a Sunday.
These groups will help those in the local community access social
support and help from others in similar positions as well as the Church
and will facilitate interaction. For many elderly residents, a luncheon
club or similar initiatives provide important social stimulus. Many elderly
persons can become depressed and isolated, indeed NHS England and
Age UK found that nearly half of adults over 55, a staggering 7.7 million,
have experienced depression and one in five said their symptoms
worsened as they got older.

Within Wimborne, at Allenview House, East Dorset social services has
their offices. These are accessible to the residents for customer advice
and appointments for help with issues such as benefits, council tax,
environmental health, housing and parking. Offices are currently closed,
and information is available via email, telephone or the website for
residents.
Nursing/Residential Homes/Assisted living/Retirement living:
Wimborne Minster has two care homes and one retirement village in the
area. Though more are evident in the close vicinity and wider locality of
Wimborne. The retirement village is, on analysis, for more affluent
residents as prices start high for the flats and associated facilities. The
Streets Meadow care home is council run and therefore would be
accessible to Wimborne residents requiring care, including those with
Dementia, who are not so financially able to cover private fees which
can be substantial, but who wish to stay in the local area.
Renaissance Retirement: This is a retirement village with prices starting
from £270,000. The facilities include on site bookable guest room for
friends and family, on-site concierge, parking and some with views over
the River Allen.

Stoneleigh House Residential Home: This is a residential home for the
elderly situated near to Waitrose and has a rating of good with the CQC
from 2017 on last inspection.
Streets Meadow: This care home is run by a company called Tricuro.
This company is wholly owned by Dorset and Bournemouth,
Christchurch and Poole Council and provides a whole range of health
services throughout Dorset. Streets Meadow care home has 60 rooms
over 2 floors and divided into 4 units of 15. Two of the units cater for
elderly with dementia. It had a CQC rating of good from inspection in
2019.
Home Care Agencies:
Wimborne Minster has one private home care agency with more in the
close vicinity and wider area of Wimborne. Candlelight Care provide
home care and offer live in care services.
Additionally, Tricuro, the council led service, also offer extensive home
care, night care and a reablement service for short term rehabilitation of
up to 6 weeks.
This shows that the residents of Wimborne Minster have a good access
to home care provision should they require it, at both private and social
services financial levels both within Wimborne Minster and from the
outlying localities.

Summary and closing analysis:
Overall, the health and social services provision within Wimborne
Minster is very good. The NHS provided facilities work well and are a
credit to the community with the community hospital essential for many
people, not just the immediate area, but from outlying suburbs and
towns close by. There are many alternative and complementary
therapies within the area for those who can afford them and care home
and home care facilities for people from all economic backgrounds and
finances.
Social and health community led facilities and services are numerous
and cater for a wide spectrum of ages and abilities, particularly through
the Allendale centre and local initiatives.
The food bank had become increasingly used before Covid-19 and
more so during the pandemic. This maybe a potential issue as the
pandemic develops as donations are decreasing and use is increasing
significantly. The service may be put under a lot more pressure and will
be a lifeline for those who use it now and in the uncertain future.
Without this service being able to meet demand the physical and mental
health of those using the service will be affected negatively. Not being
able to access a food bank package when desperately needed would
produce high stress levels in people already struggling.

Stressors can be defined by their emotional significance and meaning
to individuals (Cassidy 2011) and therefore interpretation of stress is
individual and built on numerous factors in a person’s life including the
element of controllability. Something that the current pandemic has
taken away from a lot of people is the element of control over what is
happening in their lives, compounding stressful events and their
interpretation of them. Foodbanks are a lifeline to those who feel as
though they have no control of where their next meal is coming from.

Wimborne is a well-established affluent country town which greatly respects its
historical and cultural heritage and its sense of community. The buildings within
the town evidence this, with the Minster, Museum, original roads and many
buildings surviving from the 16th
, 17, and 18th
centuries as care and attention has
been paid over the years to ensure that the history remains and is valued.
Wimborne is a locality that reflects a very good standard of living overall. The
facilities are good, and the social determinants of health have both positively
benefited and negatively affected the town throughout history and to the present
day. Being recognised as part of East Dorset and with the highest life expectancy
in the country, identifying issues was not straight forward. It is undoubtably a good
place to live and support systems are in place throughout the community which is
placed within a beautiful country town environment. It is evident tourism plays a
large part in the life of the town and that traditional elements are illustrated such
as the town magazines.
28
Your
perceptions
Wimborne Minster retains many of its historical features as a vibrant market town
that is full of character. The town’s centre is very pretty with the River Allen
flowing right through the centre park area where there are many areas such as
the Square, cafes, hotels, pubs, restaurants, parks and open spaces where it is
easy to meet people. Wimborne is a nice community and well organised with
many old buildings from the 17th
and 18th
century. It is rich in history, culture, has
a thriving tourist trade and still has a thriving market. The landscape is beautiful
with good views from the Colehill area. It is a reserved community with an almost
village like atmosphere rather than a town.

Wimborne Minster and the surrounding area of Wimborne is often perceived as an affluent area and in many ways, this
is an accurate description of the town and area. It has a rich history linked to the Minster Church and has very good
facilities across the spectrum of the Windshield Survey.

The health and social well-being diagnosis for Wimborne Minster is good. The area and facilities facilitate a good
standard of living overall. The area and community allow for a good backup of resources in challenging times and
considering stressors from events such as the covid-19 pandemic. The availability and accessibility of outdoor areas for
daily exercise in the physical environment, green areas and access to river walks illustrate this and would have been
invaluable during the full lockdown period. Being able to easily access fresh air in a country environment and exercise
and the setting up of support groups within the town illustrate this. It is also evident that the town has a culture of care.
Buildings, gardens and the streets and town are presented well, no rubbish is evident, the area is clean and tidy and
presents a country town feel. Appendix photos throughout illustrate the feel of the town.
Tourism is an important element of the town and attention is paid to providing this provision with respect to the history
and culture of the town. Festivals and events are a large part of the life of the town and provide a significant revenue for
business in the area. The full effect of Covid-19 on this element remains to be seen, as with the rest of the country as
festivals have been cancelled or postponed till later in the year. Stressors such as unemployment and lack of tourism
may become more evident in Wimborne Minster and will be determined in a large part at a government level regarding
the lifting of restrictions moving forward and the confidence of people to visit places again.
It is also evident that the community of Wimborne is resilient and can pull together at times of tragedy, and bring about
positive change for the community, an example of this is the Skate Park at Redcotts. This was built by The Gunstone
Trust which was set up by family and friends within the community of Sam Gunstone who was killed in a car accident in
2010 on the Wimborne by-pass aged only 18 years. Appendix S1 shows the park and the information board set up next
to it at Redcotts which details the story behind its conception.
However, issues and avenues for improvement can still be identified, even in this affluent area. There are several areas
where there is the opportunity to move forward and improve.
31
1. Comments on the condition of the paths: Raised by residents regarding poor access as paths are slim in places
and not conducive for wheelchair users or for older persons. The town centre retaining historical markers and
buildings has meant that the layout and narrow side streets have not changed much and is not realistically
feasible to adapt narrow streets and to retain the history and feel of the town. Although recent changes to the
square in the last few years has meant significant improvement in path conditions and accessibility, this is an
area which could be addressed to ensure fair access to all. If residents feel they can't go out people potentially
could become isolated and depressed and not exercising creating more health issues.
2. Stopping of the Stour and Avon Magazine: The removal of the Stour and Avon magazine has resulted in local
members are now unable to keep up to date with local news. Although the Allendale magazine is still offered it is
only issued quarterly. People in the area rely on this magazine to get involved in local events and hear the news
around the town. Therefore, this may no longer be the case due to it no longer being available.
3. Bus Service in Wimborne Minster area: Buses in Wimborne are operated by Morebus with the routes running
being 3,4 and 13. Due to covid-19 route 4 is temporarily terminated causing there to be only two local buses
running through Wimborne. Route 3 runs every 30 minutes to and from Poole to Wimborne Monday-Saturday
daytime and is said to be the fastest route. Route 13 goes to and from Bournemouth to Wimborne every 30
minutes Monday to Saturday daytime and hourly on Sunday and during the evenings. The bus stops situated in
Wimborne are very spread out causing those living in particular areas have a far distance to travel in order to get
to a bus stop. With Wimborne serving an older generation, mobility is varied therefore a wider range of location
for bus stops would meet with their abilities a lot better.
4. Increasing use of food bank in Wimborne: In Wimborne demand has increased massively from 2018 to 2019.
This identifies the need for an increase in food banks in the area. Due to covid-19 the demand has increased by
almost 100% compared to this time last year providing 500 parcels already this year compared to last year
contributions from
discussion with all
team members at

32
where they only sent 760 food parcels in the whole year. Wimborne is known as a wealthy area, but these
figures have proven that more food banks are now needed in the area, even more so with the Covid-19
pandemic.
5. No Government led unemployment office in Wimborne area: due to the current covid-19 pandemic,
unemployment has risen. Business have either had to close due to loss of expenses therefore people being
made redundant or business have had to reduce the number of staff. For those living in Wimborne this has come
with a bigger issue, as there is no unemployment office in the area to help with job advice and issues. The
closest job centre is either Bournemouth or Poole, which means travelling to one of these areas. For those with
no form of transport means using public transport which causes another stressor due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Four of these identified issues will now be discussed in more detail in the next section with comparisons to local areas.

Communication:
The removal of
the Stour and
Avon magazine
BP
The ceasing of production for the Stour and Avon magazine has meant that
a portion of the Wimborne population is not able to keep up with ever
changing local news. The Allendale Magazine aims to bridge the gap
however it is only issued quarterly.
The wellbeing of Wimborne residents could be greatly improved through the
introduction of a more frequent magazine. As a high percentage of
the population is elderly it appears it is often difficult for some in the
community to keep up to date. They are unaware of new schemes in the
area such as the Lantern Befriending Service that helps to
tackle loneliness within the elderly. Those within a community do
not always have access or sometimes do not fully understand the use of ICT
services, it has been found that members of a community without
such amenities have a greater feeling of loneliness than those that do
(Pearlman-Avnion, Goldschmidt and Shamis, 2019) it is therefore necessary
to keep forms of communication that do not rely on ICT running on a
frequent basis.

Although there is move for more ICT services in modern society many
communities still manage to communicate without it. For example, in
villages around Buckinghamshire there is a communique system in which
750 copies of a magazine are posted through doors every month. This
system is still in place under covid-19 regulations and guidelines.
Transport:
Bus Service in
Wimborne
EY
Wimborne Minster has one of the highest ratings for life expectancy in the
country, but there are some stressors to daily life that could be improved
including public transport. Presently Wimborne has only one regular, daily,
bus route (no13) from Wimborne to Bournemouth, and one from Wimborne
to Poole (See appendix WS1). However, residents along Leigh Road have
no regular daily bus. Speaking to a retired resident in Cutlers Place, she
relies on the no13 for transport and has a ten-minute uphill walk to the bus-
stop but would not be using taxis as they are expensive. She also said that
pavements are not in the best of condition.
Transport often becomes a stressor when people become less mobile as
they grow older, tend not to go out so much, are often more conscious of
spending money, or simply concerned of tripping over bad
pavements. Residents can become more isolated affecting their physical
and mental health.

I have included a comparison with neighbouring Ringwood with population
of 14,360, which has a better local community bus service (shown in blue in
appendix WS2). This runs half-hourly within the populated area and linking
to the central bus stand in the town centre where passengers can then
transfer to longer distance bus routes (shown in red), to Bournemouth,
Salisbury, Verwood, Ferndown or intercity coaches as required. This
Ringwood approach would appear advantageous.

Unemployment Office
Access:
PO
As of 2010, the rate of unemployment in Wimborne was 3.4%. The price has
spiked in 2020, given the current Coronavirus pandemic. The closure has
affected many, with businesses reducing their staff to maintain the
resources that they would incur for paying employees for work undone.
Some employees are on unpaid leave, while interns and those on temporary
contracts unable to secure new positions in the community. Most
businesses have closed and are not planning to reopen, with event planning
cancelled indefinitely due to the social distance rule that all individuals are
expected to abide by. Recreational places such as Allendale Centre have
been closed as well, leaving many without any source of income. This
situation led to increased tension and mental distress on many who are
uncertain about their futures in their places of work. Given that there is no
job centre in Wimborne, it is difficult for residents to find a source of
employment within the town. With the current restrictions, most people are
unable to seek employment in nearby cities.
The pandemic has caused psychological trauma, triggering
depression, and stress as people think of how to survive and feed their
families. This situation can lead to suicide and also causes aggressive

behaviour to those affected, affecting marriages as well and leads to
depression.
Additionally, these individuals are likely to experience PTSD as they
adapt to their current situations since they must care for their health and
worry about their finances. The residents are also buried in debt as they
take out loans for survival. Most people are buried in universal debt, which
spiked in mid-May.
The statistics of unemployment has increased substantially during this Covid
era, and also given the fact that there is no job centre in Wimborne. In
comparison to Ferndown, the unemployment rate is much higher than that
of Wimborne and there is no job centre in Ferndown which is closer to
Wimborne, which means person’s seeking employment will have to travel as
far as Bournemouth.

Food Bank Provision
in Wimborne:
AK
The first two weeks of the coronavirus lockdown triggered an unprecedented
rise in food bank use as the economy was hit and household incomes
plunged, data from hundreds of emergency food aid charities reveals.
The Trussell Trust, the UK’s biggest food bank network, said it experienced
its busiest ever period after lockdown was announced on 23 March, when it
issued 50,000 food parcels in the space of a week, almost double its usual
volume.

38
The number of children's food parcels distributed by the Trussell Trust in the
last two weeks of March more than doubled compared with the same period
in 2019.
The dramatic recent increase in food bank reliance, which comes after years
of gradually rising food bank use, were caused by people’s income dropping
– often because they had lost their job – or because their benefit payments
failed to keep up with the cost of living, the trust said.
In Wimborne, demand had increased by 50% from 2018 to 2019 shows the
need for the food bank services are increasing. For the months of April and
May the usage and demand has increased 93% on this time last year due to
the effect of Covid-19 pandemic. That to date, the food bank has provided
500 parcels this year, the total for the whole of last year was 760. Many of
the pupils that remain in school are those on low income and rely on free
school meals. Foodbanks are continuing to keep up with this demand and
provide for these vulnerable students.

It is situated at the join of the rivers Stour and Allen around 5 miles north of Poole and is twinned with Valognes, France and Ochsenfurt, Germany. Appendix H2 shows a detailed map of the town as it was in 1900, the river Stour can be seen running to the north east and the Allen winding to the north and through the town itself.
  • 4. 4 A 2013 report by the Office for National Statistics showed that East Dorset residents, such as those in Wimborne, Verwood and Ferndown, had the longest life expectancy in the country out of the 346 places that were assessed. Men and women in these areas are expected to live 4.4 years longer than residents in close local boroughs of Bournemouth, tabled in 215th place in the report and Poole in 114th place. Wimborne has a rich history which has shaped it into the popular country town it is today. Towns are shaped by the context of their environment and surroundings and this is true for the history of Wimborne Minster. Archaeological evidence suggests that prehistoric field systems were potentially the base for field boundaries and the roads as the town developed. The ground foundations are London clay which were important in the area for the manufacture of earthenware pottery and bricks, large brickworks remained active into the 20th century in and around Wimborne Minster and was a significant source of income and employment for the area. Wimborne’s recorded history starts with that of the Saxon Nunnery, one of the oldest religions founded in Dorset. A male monastery also resided, although both were kept very much separate from the other. High walls Bournemouth Echo. 2013. East Dorset residents have highest life expectancy in England and Wales [online]. Available from: https://www.bournemouthec ho.co.uk/news/10571512.ea st-dorset-residents-have- highest-life-expectancy-in- england-and-wales/ [Accessed 6th July 2020]. • 5. 5 surrounding these establishments are mentioned in early records, suggesting that the original Saxon town was indeed walled. The nunnery and monastery were destroyed in 1013 in a Danish raid however a College of Canons were founded in 1043 by Edward the Confessor, to live and worship in what was to become the ‘Minster church’. This was extensively built between 1120 and 1180 to support the Canons, much of this building still survives today. Therefore, it can be argued that the town roots have been forged in and around religion and worship from early Saxon times. The development of the town as it is now, was highly influenced by the religions active at specific times throughout history, determining the direction of the town and its people. The Minster today is still a working church and is also a popular tourist attraction with its chained library. Appendix H3 shows the Minster Church past and present. In 1941 the iron railings around the church yard were removed to assist in the war effort and this can be seen in the photos as they were never replaced. During the medieval period, the town was divided between two major manors, each holding separate markets, building upon their own lands and adding roads and suburbs. Seventy-three taxpayers were recognised in Wimborne Minster in 1332, this was a relatively high number, Wareham for example had only 27 recorded taxpayers at this time. All taxpayers documented were common, low wealth job roles including teacher, auctioneer, carpenter, Spicer and preacher. brief History of the Minster [Online]. • 6. 6 Decline in the town was evident in the late 1340s, due to the emergence of the black death in 1348. This pandemic entered Britain through a local Dorset port, now known as Weymouth, and as people fled inland, inadvertently the plague spread further throughout the country. An estimated 25 million people died in Europe, almost one third of the total population. An estimated 30-50% of the total population of England alone died and was undoubtably was one of the worst recorded pandemics in history. Considering the current Coronavirus pandemic, it is apt that consideration is paid to the conditions of the time and the fear people must have felt. A fear many people feel now, but today in an environment where technology has played a critical role and the dissemination of information, infection control, scientific progress and knowledge has helped the world immensely to deal with the current outbreak. However, over time, the town continued to grow again and develop, building new suburbs over the next 200 years. Three chapels, in addition to the Minster, were noted in the town during the medieval period, showing that religion remained a central and significant aspect to the town’s way of life and influence upon it. In 1547, the first year of Edward VI’s reign, the Canons at the Minster were dissolved and removed from post, this also resulted in the loss of the college free school. This evidences how the influence of royal and parliamentary level decisions directly affected the History Channel, 2020. The Black Death: A Timeline of the Gruesome Pandemic [online]. Available at: https://www.history.com/ne ws/black-death-timeline [Accessed 21st June 2020]. Dorset Life Magazine, 2009. Dorset’s Plague Port [online]. • 7. 7 health of the town and its children. At this time, no provision was made for a replacement school until 1563 when Elizabeth 1st was on the throne. She granted part of the former college of Canons to become Queen Elizabeth School, a school still in full operation today in Wimborne. Contemporary studies and recommendations evidence the link between good education and health and well-being development throughout the lifespan (Scriven, 2017). It can therefore be argued that the no free school provision for sixteen years within Wimborne would have been significantly detrimental to the health of the town and its children and is evidenced through historical documents of the time in which concerns were raised by the towns people of Wimborne about the lack of free schooling. Moving forward, Victorian and Edwardian times brought a railway and station to Wimborne in 1847 (see appendix H4) and saw significant development to industry and suburbs. A cattle market was built next to the station, sawmills and a hotel. The 1892 census recorded the population of Wimborne Minster as 6,203 and gravel and clay industries including brickworks were established in the thriving market town. Many businesses relied on natural resources for their trade, the lands were good for farming and weekly markets and annual fairs became the towns life. Three schools were running by 1865 and the town layout changed dramatically with the focus shifting to the railway, however the medieval town centre remained relatively unchanged. Scriven, A 2017. • 8. 8 The Victoria Cottage Hospital was opened in 1887 in honour of the jubilee of Queen Victoria. The grounds were leased from Sir John Hanham with the understanding that the site must be used as a cottage hospital for the poor. Initially the hospital accommodated nine patients who were cared for by one matron working 24 hours a day and who took no annual leave. The community hospital was taken over by the NHS in 1948, is often referred to as now as Wimborne community hospital and is still operational today with facilities for 22 inpatients and numerous outpatient departments. This hospital is highly beneficial and accessible to the contemporary local community. Appendix H5 shows past and present photos of the hospital, the original cottage hospital as it was, to the modern facilities it now has which on the outside still resembles in part the original building. Wimborne continued to thrive, avoiding many of the issues associated with the depression of the 1920s and 1930s. Good transport links and proximity to the south coast and Bournemouth meant that wealthy professionals moved to the area, bringing jobs and opportunities. Unemployment and crime rates at the time remained low in comparison with other areas of the country, demonstrating how the social determinants of health, such as good transport, can significantly affect the health of a community like Wimborne in a positive way. NHS Dorset Health Care University NHS Foundation Trust, 2020. Victoria Community Hospital – Wimborne [online]. Available from: https://www.dorsethealthcar e.nhs.uk/patients-and- visitors/our-services- hospitals/community- hospitals/victoria- community-hospital [Accesses 24th June 2020].
  • 9. 9 The railway and surrounding businesses now including breweries and dairies, developing with the established rail links to London. The railway closed in 1977, although it can be argued that this was not detrimental to the area as the cattle market expanded ground to include part of the former station, and Wimborne’s weekly market flourished. This is still an ongoing event today and so much so, now has a multi-storey carpark to accommodate the level of traffic visiting the market each week and events such as the Wimborne Folk Festival and literacy festival bring numerous visitors to the town each year (see appendix H6). This evidences that Wimborne now has a significant tourism income, through the weekly markets and many annual events throughout the year. However, one notable negative effect of the railway closure was increased traffic and congestion in Wimborne Minster, so a by-pass was opened in 1981 to relive the pressure on the town. Furthermore, significant suburban development around Wimborne Minster and into Colehill particularly is evidenced and continues to this day. This is further illustrated when in 2010 Waitrose opened on the site of the old cricket pitch. This was the first superstore in the Wimborne area, before this the only shops were small convenience shops in the Wimborne Minster area. A large shop required travelling out of the area. This expansion was controversial, with a lot of local opposition to the Bournemouth Echo, 2010. Wimborne’s new Waitrose set to open on Thursday [online] Available from: https://www.bournemouthec ho.co.uk/news/8259881.wi mbornes-new-waitrose-set- to-open-on-thursday/ [Accessed 3rd July 2020].
  • 10. 10 redevelopment of the area. However, East Dorset District Council approved the application despite planning officer’s advice to refuse it. Nonetheless, the medieval town centre itself remains relatively unchanged and retains historic character with the redevelopment and improvement to the pedestrian and seating areas in the square the only major change. Many buildings are Grade 2 listed and with the Minster Church still dominating the skyline and surrounding countryside, the town continues to thrive whilst respecting the history that has forged its contemporary growth (see appendix H7).
  • 11. 11 • Community subsystems Sections Observations and data Resources and Sources Used Names of Students contributing to this section Health and social services Wimborne Minster demographics show that the total population over the age of 16 is 5812 out of 7014 residents. Of this, 32.7% are aged 65 or over, with the median age being 47. Analysis of census data from 2011 shows that of all residents, 20.8% describe themselves as having fair, bad or very bad health, therefore potentially requiring access to health provision on a regular basis. Census statistics also show that 21.9% of residents describe themselves as having a long-term health problem or disability which limits their day-to-day activities in some way (UK Census 2011). The provision of health and social services within the Wimborne area appears to be good, with the Victoria (Wimborne) Community Hospital a lifeline facility for many residents. There are Gp services and NHS led provisions alongside many community level organised health and UK Census Data, 2011. Wimborne Minster. [online]. Good Stuff. • 12. 12 wellbeing services and sessions, which indicate robust coping systems in place to address stressors. The services and their impact on the community are detailed and analysed below. Victoria/Wimborne Community Hospital: Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust: The Community hospital, which is located close to the town centre (see appendix HS1), was opened in 1887 in honour of the jubilee of Queen Victoria. As discussed in the history section above, the grounds were leased from Sir John Hanham with the understanding that the site must be used as a cottage hospital for the poor. Initially the hospital accommodated nine patients who were cared for by one matron. The community hospital was taken over by the NHS in 1948, is often referred to as Wimborne community hospital and is now part of Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust which itself was rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission in 2019. • 13. 13 Facilities at the hospital have grown over the past 130 years to incorporate a large variety of services for the local community including accommodating 22 in-patients in Hanham ward, a minor injuries unit, operating theatre, endoscopy suite, out-patients department, physiotherapy department and X-ray facilities. The out-patient facilities include Audiology, Cancer Treatment, Dermatology, Diabetic Clinic and Echo Cardiology. Services also provide Stroke Early Supported Discharge. The minor injuries unit is vital as it provides a local point of contact for minor injuries treatment that otherwise would mean travelling to Poole or Bournemouth Hospitals and also serves the outlying areas of Wimborne and the countryside villages, particularly to the north of the parish of Wimborne Minster. The minor injuries unit normally provides a walk-in service, details of changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic can be seen in appendix HS2 which evidences that changes to the protocols have been made including running on telephone triage and an appointment only basis at the present time. In analysis, this hospital and all the services it provides are vital to the community. Other hospitals in the area are Poole and Bournemouth, both of which are further away and are potentially harder for people to access and travel to, particularly without their own vehicle. Appendix HS3 shows the location of other hospitals relative to Wimborne and travelling times, which are taken in good driving conditions. • 14. 14 conditions potentially make these journeys significantly longer by car and more so by public transport as buses in the Wimborne area are not so frequent especially early in the morning and into the evening. Furthermore, analysis of the NHS reviews and ratings show that patient satisfaction is very high across the board for the services provided by the hospital with many positive comments regarding the facilities, services and staff. Gp Services: NHS: Gp services for the Wimborne Minster area comprise of three surgeries. The Quarter Jack Surgery, Walford Mill Surgery and The Old Dispensary. Appendix HS4 details their locations within Wimborne Minster and all three service the Minster and the outlying areas of Wimborne and surrounding villages. The Quarter Jack Surgery has operated since 1907, has a ‘good’ CQC rating, as does the Walford Mill Medical Centre and the Old Dispensary currently has a rating of ‘outstanding’. All surgeries provide a full range of NHS Gp services including online services, electronic prescription requests, district nursing services, well man clinics and maternity services. All are currently working in line with Covid-19 guideline protocols. [Accessed 29th June 2020]. The Quarter Jack Surgery, 2020. The Quarter Jack Surgery [online]. • 15. 15 Within the Wimborne Minster area 11.4% of the 7,014 residents provide unpaid care with 20.2% of these carers providing 50 hours or more each week. The provision of support for unpaid carers in the area should be considered. The three surgeries in the area provide advice and links to services on and off site for carers to access. Appendix HS5 which shows snapshots from the websites and shows that the Walford Mill surgery has a ‘Health Coach’ to help people manage the day to day practical and emotional aspects of their conditions. This also links to community level services such as those provided by the Allendale centre, discussed below. Their groups and sessions will also be of support and benefit to carers within the community, such as the Tai Chi session for people with Parkinson’s which family and friends can also attend. • 16. 16 The Allendale Centre: The Allendale Centre in Hanham Road Wimborne is a community centre which runs various clubs and events to enhance the health and wellbeing of the local community. There is a soft play area for under 5s, a vibro-plate exercise centre, theatre, café, conference facilities and exercise facilities available. It supports clubs and organisations alongside small independent businesses running classes and the NHS hold flu clinics in the winter for residents. Facilities also extent to wedding receptions and music events and it has two on-site bars showing that the centre is adaptable and very much involved in the spirit and community of Wimborne. Numerous health and fitness classes are available at the centre including Health Walks around Wimborne for exercise and social contact, Play Sportz for young children, Flexercise, Weightwatchers, Zumba and Pilates classes. There is also an over 50s lunch club, DanceAway classes, Allendale Bridge Club, Guitar Club, U3A Bridge Care Quality Commission 2017. Walford Mill Medical Centre [online]. • 17. 17 and Scrabble sessions and Baby Yoga. Tai Chi classes run by the East Dorset Branch of Parkinson’s UK have also commenced at the centre facilitating people in the area with the disease and is well regarded by those who attend and is a support avenue for carers and family members as well. Appendix HS6 shows a local article in The Allendale magazine talking about some of these sessions and the benefits. The WDCA which is the Wimborne and District Community Association are responsible for the running, delivery and organisation of the Allendale Centre. Currently the centre is closed as per Covid-19 protocols and is only open for NHS Blood Donor Sessions as this is considered a vital service. The café at the Allendale has recently opened for takeaway services and throughout the pandemic has offered free hot meals to those in need within the community in financial or health difficulties. Complementary and Alternative Therapies and Treatments: Wimborne Minster has six businesses offering private complementary and alternative therapies and treatments on a private basis. These include acupuncture, massage, osteopathy, chiropractic services, Telephone Interview with Sharon Keenan, Wimborne Food Bank Coordinator. [Interviewed by phone 30th June 2020].
  • 18. 18 counselling and homeopathic treatments. Other services include cranio sacral therapy, yoga and meditation. This demonstrates that the use of these types of therapies are in demand in Wimborne Minster and the surrounding areas and consequently that there are the finances present within the community to cover the costs at private prices. Appendix HS7 details all the private therapies available in the locality with information on the services they provide. These services will evidently only be available to those residents with the finances to pay for private therapies. Wimborne is an affluent area, although there will be a degree of residents who would be unable to access these private health facilities due to cost. Job Centre/Employment Access: Wimborne Minster itself is an affluent area and the census data from 2011 evidences that unemployment is relatively low, recorded as 366 economically inactive residents, not including retired and long-term sick or disabled. In analysis, it can be argued that these numbers, which do include students and people caring for family or home, will have changed since 2011. People may wish to return to work as children grow up, students graduate, and several retired persons may also wish to re-enter the working environment to some degree. In terms of access to government led Jobcentres the nearest available sites would be Poole (20mins drive), Bournemouth (30mins drive) or Blandford (20mins drive). Journeys would be substantially longer by public transport and in heavy traffic which is usually evident on the local roads particularly around Bournemouth and Poole in normal circumstances, before the Covid-19 pandemic. This itself may mean some residents are unable to easily access job centres services due to distance, lack of transport or other related personal factors adding stress to an already stressful situation. Wimborne Foodbank+: Wimborne food bank is situated in Gordon Road within the Leigh Park Community Centre. The food bank has been operational since 2012 and is run by Faithworks Wessex, an independent Christian charity. • 20. 20 Other services on offer within the foodbank include budget coaching and advice, cooking and eating well courses, community lunches and holiday top up vouchers for people who receive free school meals which can be exchanged for small food parcels. In a telephone interview, food bank coordinator Sharon Keenan advised that packages are pre-packed and then extras, nappies for example, are provided on assessment on the day. She also said that as Wimborne is a generally affluent area with a significant older population, they have more than enough volunteers and even have a waiting list for people wishing to volunteer. Other food banks such as Bournemouth and Poole often don’t have enough volunteers, she added. Appendix HS8 details the 2019 annual report for the foodbank showing the assistance they have provided to the Wimborne community and where donations have originated. This evidences that there is a growing demand for food bank services even though the area is as evidences shows, an affluent locality. Sharon also talked about how the other services have had to cease due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but they have adjusted. • 21. 21 The food bank also run the community fridge initiative from the Allendale Centre. This is currently closed but normally is available for people to put in fresh excess food they have, and food can be taken out by anyone who needs it. Local shops including Waitrose also donate to the fridge, with volunteers going to the shops to collect excess food that otherwise would be wasted. In analysis, the food bank and the services they provide are essential to the growing area of Wimborne Minster and the larger surrounding area of Wimborne such as Colehill and Lye Park. The issue that even before the pandemic, demand had increased by 50% from 2018 to 2019 shows the need for the food bank services are increasing despite the affluent area. The need is compounded by the pandemic and the normal level of demand, in normal circumstances, for the Wimborne area is on a par with the area of Christchurch, a much larger area in Dorset. For the months of April and May the usage and demand has increased 93% on this time last year due to the effect of Covid-19 pandemic. That to date, the food bank has provided 500 parcels this year, the total for the whole of last year was 760. In regards to the issue of homelessness, the Salvation army advised me that if they have an issue with a homeless person in Wimborne, occasionally this happens but it is not frequent, they will then consult with the Boscombe Branch who my contact advises are well versed in homelessness issues and the problems they face. The Salvation Army offers luncheon clubs on a Thursday and a parent and toddler group on a Wednesday at very cheap prices with services on a Sunday. These groups will help those in the local community access social support and help from others in similar positions as well as the Church and will facilitate interaction. For many elderly residents, a luncheon club or similar initiatives provide important social stimulus. Many elderly persons can become depressed and isolated, indeed NHS England and Age UK found that nearly half of adults over 55, a staggering 7.7 million, have experienced depression and one in five said their symptoms worsened as they got older. Nursing/Residential Homes/Assisted living/Retirement living: Wimborne Minster has two care homes and one retirement village in the area. Though more are evident in the close vicinity and wider locality of Wimborne. The retirement village is, on analysis, for more affluent residents as prices start high for the flats and associated facilities. The Streets Meadow care home is council run and therefore would be accessible to Wimborne residents requiring care, including those with Dementia, who are not so financially able to cover private fees which can be substantial, but who wish to stay in the local area. • 25. 25 Summary and closing analysis: Overall, the health and social services provision within Wimborne Minster is very good. The NHS provided facilities work well and are a credit to the community with the community hospital essential for many people, not just the immediate area, but from outlying suburbs and towns close by. There are many alternative and complementary therapies within the area for those who can afford them and care home and home care facilities for people from all economic backgrounds and finances. Social and health community led facilities and services are numerous and cater for a wide spectrum of ages and abilities, particularly through the Allendale centre and local initiatives. The food bank had become increasingly used before Covid-19 and more so during the pandemic. This maybe a potential issue as the pandemic develops as donations are decreasing and use is increasing significantly. The service may be put under a lot more pressure and will be a lifeline for those who use it now and in the uncertain future. Without this service being able to meet demand the physical and mental health of those using the service will be affected negatively. Not being able to access a food bank package when desperately needed would produce high stress levels in people already struggling. https://www.candlelightcare.c o.uk/ [Accessed 5th July 2020]. • 26. 26 Stressors can be defined by their emotional significance and meaning to individuals (Cassidy 2011) and therefore interpretation of stress is individual and built on numerous factors in a person’s life including the element of controllability. Something that the current pandemic has taken away from a lot of people is the element of control over what is happening in their lives, compounding stressful events and their interpretation of them. Foodbanks are a lifeline to those who feel as though they have no control of where their next meal is coming from.
  • 27. 27 • Community perceptions Sections Observations and data Resources/Sources Names of Students contributing to this section Your perceptions Wimborne is a well-established affluent country town which greatly respects its historical and cultural heritage and its sense of community. The buildings within the town evidence this, with the Minster, Museum, original roads and many buildings surviving from the 16th , 17, and 18th centuries as care and attention has been paid over the years to ensure that the history remains and is valued. Wimborne is a locality that reflects a very good standard of living overall. The facilities are good, and the social determinants of health have both positively benefited and negatively affected the town throughout history and to the present day. Being recognised as part of East Dorset and with the highest life expectancy in the country, identifying issues was not straight forward. It is undoubtably a good place to live and support systems are in place throughout the community which is placed within a beautiful country town environment. It is evident tourism plays a large part in the life of the town and that traditional elements are illustrated such as the town magazines.
  • 28. 28 Your perceptions Wimborne Minster retains many of its historical features as a vibrant market town that is full of character. The town’s centre is very pretty with the River Allen flowing right through the centre park area where there are many areas such as the Square, cafes, hotels, pubs, restaurants, parks and open spaces where it is easy to meet people. Wimborne is a nice community and well organised with many old buildings from the 17th and 18th century. It is rich in history, culture, has a thriving tourist trade and still has a thriving market. The landscape is beautiful with good views from the Colehill area. It is a reserved community with an almost village like atmosphere rather than a town.
  • 29. 29 Once the Windshield survey is completed: • Interpret the data collected and identify stressors. • Assess community stressors using the Windshield survey as a guide. • Consider the implications of stressors in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic • Develop a community health and social wellbeing diagnosis and identify key issues. • Summarise the findings from the Windshield survey and submit the completed report and all elements of the Windshield survey by the due date Summary Names of Students contributing to this section Wimborne Minster and the surrounding area of Wimborne is often perceived as an affluent area and in many ways, this is an accurate description of the town and area. It has a rich history linked to the Minster Church and has very good facilities across the spectrum of the Windshield Survey. Contributions from discussion with all team members at Zoom meetings.
  • 30. 30 The health and social well-being diagnosis for Wimborne Minster is good. The area and facilities facilitate a good standard of living overall. The area and community allow for a good backup of resources in challenging times and considering stressors from events such as the covid-19 pandemic. The availability and accessibility of outdoor areas for daily exercise in the physical environment, green areas and access to river walks illustrate this and would have been invaluable during the full lockdown period. Being able to easily access fresh air in a country environment and exercise and the setting up of support groups within the town illustrate this. It is also evident that the town has a culture of care. Buildings, gardens and the streets and town are presented well, no rubbish is evident, the area is clean and tidy and presents a country town feel. Appendix photos throughout illustrate the feel of the town. Tourism is an important element of the town and attention is paid to providing this provision with respect to the history and culture of the town. Festivals and events are a large part of the life of the town and provide a significant revenue for business in the area. The full effect of Covid-19 on this element remains to be seen, as with the rest of the country as festivals have been cancelled or postponed till later in the year. Stressors such as unemployment and lack of tourism may become more evident in Wimborne Minster and will be determined in a large part at a government level regarding the lifting of restrictions moving forward and the confidence of people to visit places again. It is also evident that the community of Wimborne is resilient and can pull together at times of tragedy, and bring about positive change for the community, an example of this is the Skate Park at Redcotts. This was built by The Gunstone Trust which was set up by family and friends within the community of Sam Gunstone who was killed in a car accident in 2010 on the Wimborne by-pass aged only 18 years. Appendix S1 shows the park and the information board set up next to it at Redcotts which details the story behind its conception. However, issues and avenues for improvement can still be identified, even in this affluent area. There are several areas where there is the opportunity to move forward and improve.
  • 31. 31 1. Comments on the condition of the paths: Raised by residents regarding poor access as paths are slim in places and not conducive for wheelchair users or for older persons. The town centre retaining historical markers and buildings has meant that the layout and narrow side streets have not changed much and is not realistically feasible to adapt narrow streets and to retain the history and feel of the town. Although recent changes to the square in the last few years has meant significant improvement in path conditions and accessibility, this is an area which could be addressed to ensure fair access to all. If residents feel they can't go out people potentially could become isolated and depressed and not exercising creating more health issues. 2. Stopping of the Stour and Avon Magazine: The removal of the Stour and Avon magazine has resulted in local members are now unable to keep up to date with local news. Although the Allendale magazine is still offered it is only issued quarterly. People in the area rely on this magazine to get involved in local events and hear the news around the town. Therefore, this may no longer be the case due to it no longer being available. 3. Bus Service in Wimborne Minster area: Buses in Wimborne are operated by Morebus with the routes running being 3,4 and 13. Due to covid-19 route 4 is temporarily terminated causing there to be only two local buses running through Wimborne. Route 3 runs every 30 minutes to and from Poole to Wimborne Monday-Saturday daytime and is said to be the fastest route. Route 13 goes to and from Bournemouth to Wimborne every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime and hourly on Sunday and during the evenings. The bus stops situated in Wimborne are very spread out causing those living in particular areas have a far distance to travel in order to get to a bus stop. With Wimborne serving an older generation, mobility is varied therefore a wider range of location for bus stops would meet with their abilities a lot better. 4. Increasing use of food bank in Wimborne: In Wimborne demand has increased massively from 2018 to 2019. This identifies the need for an increase in food banks in the area. Due to covid-19 the demand has increased by almost 100% compared to this time last year providing 500 parcels already this year compared to last year contributions from discussion with all team members at Zoom meetings.
  • 32. 32 where they only sent 760 food parcels in the whole year. Wimborne is known as a wealthy area, but these figures have proven that more food banks are now needed in the area, even more so with the Covid-19 pandemic. 5. No Government led unemployment office in Wimborne area: due to the current covid-19 pandemic, unemployment has risen. Business have either had to close due to loss of expenses therefore people being made redundant or business have had to reduce the number of staff. For those living in Wimborne this has come with a bigger issue, as there is no unemployment office in the area to help with job advice and issues. The closest job centre is either Bournemouth or Poole, which means travelling to one of these areas. For those with no form of transport means using public transport which causes another stressor due to the covid-19 pandemic. Four of these identified issues will now be discussed in more detail in the next section with comparisons to local areas.
  • 33. 33 Analysis and Summary of Findings (Word limit 1000) Key issues identified Analysis and summary of the Findings Names of Students contributing to this section and References/resources: Communication: The removal of the Stour and Avon magazine BP The ceasing of production for the Stour and Avon magazine has meant that a portion of the Wimborne population is not able to keep up with ever changing local news. The Allendale Magazine aims to bridge the gap however it is only issued quarterly. The wellbeing of Wimborne residents could be greatly improved through the introduction of a more frequent magazine. As a high percentage of the population is elderly it appears it is often difficult for some in the community to keep up to date. They are unaware of new schemes in the area such as the Lantern Befriending Service that helps to tackle loneliness within the elderly. Those within a community do not always have access or sometimes do not fully understand the use of ICT services, it has been found that members of a community without such amenities have a greater feeling of loneliness than those that do (Pearlman-Avnion, Goldschmidt and Shamis, 2019) it is therefore necessary to keep forms of communication that do not rely on ICT running on a frequent basis. Pearlman-Avnion, S., Goldschmidt, Y. and Shamis, N., 2019 Impacts of Urbanization and ICT Use on Loneliness Among the Elderly in Israel. Education and Urban Society, 52(6), 962- 983. • 34. 34 Although there is move for more ICT services in modern society many communities still manage to communicate without it. For example, in villages around Buckinghamshire there is a communique system in which 750 copies of a magazine are posted through doors every month. This system is still in place under covid-19 regulations and guidelines. Transport: Bus Service in Wimborne EY Wimborne Minster has one of the highest ratings for life expectancy in the country, but there are some stressors to daily life that could be improved including public transport. Presently Wimborne has only one regular, daily, bus route (no13) from Wimborne to Bournemouth, and one from Wimborne to Poole (See appendix WS1). However, residents along Leigh Road have no regular daily bus. Speaking to a retired resident in Cutlers Place, she relies on the no13 for transport and has a ten-minute uphill walk to the bus- stop but would not be using taxis as they are expensive. She also said that pavements are not in the best of condition. Transport often becomes a stressor when people become less mobile as they grow older, tend not to go out so much, are often more conscious of spending money, or simply concerned of tripping over bad pavements. Residents can become more isolated affecting their physical and mental health. Kiddle, 2020. Wimborne Minster Facts For kids [online]. • 35. 35 I have included a comparison with neighbouring Ringwood with population of 14,360, which has a better local community bus service (shown in blue in appendix WS2). This runs half-hourly within the populated area and linking to the central bus stand in the town centre where passengers can then transfer to longer distance bus routes (shown in red), to Bournemouth, Salisbury, Verwood, Ferndown or intercity coaches as required. This Ringwood approach would appear advantageous. MoreBus 13 Route, 2020. Route 13 [online]. The price has spiked in 2020, given the current Coronavirus pandemic. The closure has affected many, with businesses reducing their staff to maintain the resources that they would incur for paying employees for work undone. Some employees are on unpaid leave, while interns and those on temporary contracts unable to secure new positions in the community. Most businesses have closed and are not planning to reopen, with event planning cancelled indefinitely due to the social distance rule that all individuals are expected to abide by. Recreational places such as Allendale Centre have been closed as well, leaving many without any source of income. This situation led to increased tension and mental distress on many who are uncertain about their futures in their places of work. Given that there is no job centre in Wimborne, it is difficult for residents to find a source of employment within the town. With the current restrictions, most people are unable to seek employment in nearby cities. The pandemic has caused psychological trauma, triggering depression, and stress as people think of how to survive and feed their families. The residents are also buried in debt as they take out loans for survival. Most people are buried in universal debt, which spiked in mid-May. The statistics of unemployment has increased substantially during this Covid era, and also given the fact that there is no job centre in Wimborne. In comparison to Ferndown, the unemployment rate is much higher than that of Wimborne and there is no job centre in Ferndown which is closer to Wimborne, which means person’s seeking employment will have to travel as far as Bournemouth. heritage/pdf/historic- towns/wimborne- minster/wimborne-minster- part-5.5-historical- analysis-twentieth- century-february-2011.pdf [Accessed 30th June 2020]. Food Bank Provision in Wimborne: AK The first two weeks of the coronavirus lockdown triggered an unprecedented rise in food bank use as the economy was hit and household incomes plunged, data from hundreds of emergency food aid charities reveals. • 38. 38 The number of children's food parcels distributed by the Trussell Trust in the last two weeks of March more than doubled compared with the same period in 2019. The dramatic recent increase in food bank reliance, which comes after years of gradually rising food bank use, were caused by people’s income dropping – often because they had lost their job – or because their benefit payments failed to keep up with the cost of living, the trust said. In Wimborne, demand had increased by 50% from 2018 to 2019 shows the need for the food bank services are increasing.
