6. Yuncaypata
The village of Yuncaypata is located in the
District and Department of Cusco. It is
located in the mountains above the city of
Cusco. It takes about 1 hour on a local bus
to get there from the city. The population is
approximately 310 people.

• This is a public school with minimal
resources. The kids are bilingual (Quechua
and Spanish ), and range in age from 4 to
14 years old . They typically work on their
farms with their families.
• The staff is limited to the Principal and two
teachers, who administer the school as
well as serve as teachers.
14. Teaching in Yuncaypata
!
• Serve as a teacher’s assistant.
• Participate actively in hygiene, nutrition, and
pregnancy awareness campaigns.
• Organize art sessions for the indigenous children
with local resources. For example, pasting dried
peas, beans and sweet corn onto recycled
cardboard in the shapes of animals like llamas,
alpacas, etc.

22. Building in Yuncaypata
• Collaborate with local people and work in building
and maintenance projects like painting and minor
repairs at the school, or fixing fences at the
community center.
• Build and repair using local and traditional
materials. For example, repair roofs using adobe
bricks, and learn how to make clay bricks from
scratch!
• Help sustain local farmers by building a fence for
their guinea pigs or chickens.
28. Belen Parish Clinic in Santiago
• The Belen Parish Clinic is located in Santiago, a
district of Cusco, 15 minutes from downtown
Cusco by local buses.
• This parish clinic serves a population of
approximately 4,185 inhabitants.
• It is funded by the Parish of Belen, and has a
staff of 3 doctors, 8 nurses, 1 obstetrician, 1
biologist, 2 physical therapists, and 2 dentists.
• The doctors also integrate natural medicines
(medicinal plants) into their practice.
30. Health and Medicine in Santiago
Cusco
!
• Assist doctors with primary health care in the Belen
Parish Clinic in Cusco (e.g., weighing babies, handling
patient files, preparing medical supplies, and filing
prescriptions, etc.).
• Observe procedures and consultations, and assist as
needed (e.g., stitching wounds, assisting obstetricians
with deliveries) .
• Help the nurses by participating in vaccination campaigns
(measles, chicken pox) for rural children, when available.
• Provide prenatal care to prevent high infant mortality
rates.
• Promote and support health and hygiene awareness
campaigns.
