2. POSITION: Kennel Volunteer
PURPOSE: To assist the Kennel Department with
cleaning cages, walking dogs, helping kennel staff
give care to animals and special projects when
assigned.
DEPARTMENT: Kennel
SCHEDULE/TIME COMMITMENT:
• 1 or more days a week.
• 8:00 to 11:00am and 11:00 to 2:00pm Shifts /
Sun, Mon, Tues, Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat

3. • Feed dogs in a.m./p.m. which may include
medications for some dogs
• Cleaning inside and outside kennels, including
scooping yards
• Emptying water buckets and refilling with fresh
water as needed, picking up and washing food
bowls
• Dishing up food for either p.m. feeding or next
day a.m. feeding
• Laundry
• Walk and exercise dogs - (includes learning
the safe way to bring dogs in and out of the
kennels.)
• Animal Socialization - (going into dog runs and
spending time with them, grooming dogs)

4. • Must be able to lift 25lb, some bending
and stooping, ability to work around
strong odors and cleaning chemicals
• Ability to physically control dogs on a
leash; basic understanding of dogs and
their body language and behavior, a
willingness to take dogs out for a walk and
a love for animals
• Be able to make a willing commitment to
help on a weekly schedule

5. • Ability to follow directions and work independently
• Must be able to handle a variety of unfamiliar dogs
TRAINING:
• After completing volunteer interviews and on-line
volunteer orientation, the position will learn on-
the-job with kennel supervisor and kennel staff.
• Will attend training classes with Kennel Staff on
how to work with the dogs, learn about dog
behavior and body language.
